Veronica must find and stop a devious killer when a group of old friends is targeted for death in this new adventure from the New York Times bestselling and Edgar Award-nominated author Deanna Raybourn.

Veronica's natural-historian beau, Stoker, has been away in Bavaria for months and their relationship is at an impasse. But when Veronica shows up before him with his brother, Tiberius, Lord Templeton-Vane, he is lured back home by an intriguing job offer: preparing an iguanodon for a very special dinner party.

Tiberius has received a cryptic message-along with the obituaries of two recently deceased members of his old group of friends, the Seven Sinners-that he too should get his affairs in order. Realizing he is in grave danger but not knowing why, he plans a reunion party for the remaining Sinners at his family estate to lure the killer out while Veronica and Stoker investigate.

As the guests arrive and settle in, the evening's events turn deadly. More clues come to light, leading Veronica, Stoker, and Tiberius to uncover a shared past among the Sinners that has led to the fatal present. But the truth might be far more sinister than what they were prepared for.

This might be competing with book 4 for my favorite in the series. I adored this book. I was KICKING MY LIL FEET! I had to pull my car over at one point because I was gasping. Veronica and Stoker are what the songs are written about. This is the beat of my heart. This is what makes life worth living y'all.

I'm confused though. Is this how the romance girlies feel about books??? About more than ONE book? I get the hype now. I understand y'all. I relate to y'all. We are sisters now.

The mystery was very good and the solving of it was enjoyable. The side characters and family dynamics were also well done. BUT what made me love the early books was the interactions between Stoker and Veronica that was missing here. I did not read the last book in the series as it did not capture my interest but have read all previous. My interest in the series is waning and I give this one 3.5* for the mystery. I want more banter between the main characters otherwise it is just another cozy mystery.

When someone is looking to avenge the sins of the past, Tiberius is worried he may be next on the list of victims. Perhaps it's best to gather all players close where he can keep an eye on them . . . including our favorite dynamic duo to help catch the dastardly murderer.

Veronica and Stoker are in an off-again phase of their relationship, and so spend most of this volume avoiding one another. He is waiting for a "grand gesture" on her part, and she is wishy-washy about committing. The saddest part of this undoubtedly temporary rift is the loss of their delightful repartee. On the whole this entry was lacking in glee, though this bit from Veronica's encounter with Stoker's formidable Nanny made me laugh out loud:

"I'll grant you've got a good set of milkers if you mean to nurse any bairns you might have, but your hips is far too narrow to make easy birthing. I'll give you even odds of making it out of childbirth alive."

Foreshadowing? Who knows? Veronica might pop out a kid and not die just to prove Nanny wrong. She can't resist a good challenge.

Polite applause to the author for introducing me to one of Stoker's latest acquisitions- the wolpertinger :

And, to the uniquely Victorian appetite for dining inside dinosaurs:

I was planning on rating this one three stars, but a satisfying ending elevated it to four.

This was great! I have to admit that after I finished the previous book in this series, I was really worried about Veronica and Stoker’s future. I couldn’t wait to see how the author would handle the way things were left between the pair but it turns out that I had no real need to worry. Over the course of the series, I have fallen in love with this group of characters and love seeing the progression of their relationships over the course of the series but I am also very interested in the mystery aspect of the novel which kept me guessing until the very end.

Stoker’s brother, Tiberius, may be in danger. He has received a letter instructing him to get his affairs in order and has learned that two of his friends have recently died. After getting Stoker to return after months away, they work to prepare a party for the remaining members of Tiberius’s group and hope to be able to figure out exactly what is really going on. Stoker and Veronica make such a great team when they are working on a mystery together and I loved the fact that this story was full of twists and turns.

I listened to the audiobook and thought that Angèle Masters did a fantastic job with the story. This is the first time that I have listened to any of the books in this series and I was impressed. I really liked the various voices that she used for the cast of characters which really helped to bring the story to life. I found her voice to be very pleasant and found myself listening to this book for hours at a time.

I would highly recommend this series to others. I would recommend reading the series in order if at all possible since the character relationships grow and change over the course of the series but it could probably work as a stand alone if necessary since the mystery is fully contained in this installment. The whole series is great though so you really don’t want to miss any of the books. I cannot wait to read more of this extremely talented author’s work.

I received a review copy of this book from Berkley Publishing Group and Penguin Random House Audio.

Veronica Speedwell never fails to charm me. Eight books in and I hoped that the magic would still be there. I was relieved to find her just as appealing as usual. Veronica has a problem: oh, Tiberius Templeton-Vane has recruited her and his brother to help him respond to a threatening letter he has received, but that's not the most drastic issue on her mind. It's Stoker, who is feeling offended that she has not confided in him and did not seek him out on his “I need space to think about things" trip to Europe. He wants to feel needed and appreciated. Veronica is loathe to give him so much leverage in their relationship.

It is difficult for Veronica to trust. After all, her birth family want to keep her at arms length, with plausible deniability. And in the last book, we learned of the man that she believed to be her first husband. (See An Impossible Imposter). It turns out that shoddy paperwork annulled their union, but Stoker had stomped off to Europe before that became clear. Will Veronica be able to win him back? Will she win her bet with Stoker and Tiberius? Will she mend her friendship with J.J. Butterworth? Will they discover the murderer?

Raybourn's humour is perennially appealing to me. I love her portrayal of our daring lepidopterist, who is always aware of butterflies, but often oblivious to the finer human feelings around her. I wouldn't have her any other way!

It's no secret that I ADORE the Veronica Speedwell series. Of course I had zero chill when I was granted access. Thank you to @berkleypub and @netgalley for the free review copy. (PUB 03.07)

𝐀 𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐑𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐍𝐆𝐄 (Veronica Speedwell #8) is another engaging installment of the historical mystery adventures of Speedwell and Stoker. (Yes- you must read them in order.)

As with any great series, I find great comfort in returning to these well-known, well-loved characters. I love seeing the character's relationship evolve. Veronica Speedwell is my favorite kind of character: smart, quick-tongued, vivacious, and loyal. She knows who she is and won't sacrifice that based on other people's expectations. She is full of moxie and gumption. I wish I could join her for a glass of aguardiente as she regales me with tales of her and Stoker's latest mystery.

The last installment ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, and I was so pleased to see how it played out. This novel is perhaps the coziest and leisurely story to date. The stakes didn't feel quite as high and that was fine with me. Excelsior!

Deanna Raybourn has this magical ability to bring the mystery to life through both her writing and storytelling style. Her stories have a pacing that makes me slow down and savor each passage. And oh my goodness- she is a wordsmith. Her vocabulary astounds me. I find myself highlighting 'new-to-me' words that have me running to the dictionary and wondering how I can work them into conversation.

4.5 stars ~ [8.06/10]

I do not turn up for the mysteries in this book series, whilst they are fun and often farcical... it's the ongoing character storylines I turn up for. Honestly, the mystery could be rubbish and I wouldn't care as long as we got great character moments and especially great Veronica/Stoker moments. And, I think Deanna Raybourn kind of knows this because she always delivers.

Some of the things that happened in this book have been a long time coming for Veronica. I think we, as the readers, have known that she was going to get to this place long before she realised it and it's been great fun to watch her try and convince herself otherwise. This aspect works so well with her first person narration, because Raybourn is able to fully immerse herself in the unreliable aspects of Veronica's narration. It's so fun to read and a near perfect balance to the mystery that is taking place because we end up knowing more than Veronica in some aspects but still need her to solve the mystery - where she always knows more than the reader.

I loved Stoker's 'it's your turn' moment at the beginning and how Veronica initially pretended not to be shook by it and I adored that it meant she ended up in the position of carrying out the grand gesture. I love that Raybourn always finds new and interesting ways to explore their relationship and that she continues to fuel the flames long past the will-they-won't-they question has been answered. It's like she's studied how books and shows have gotten this wrong in the past and is correcting all the wrongs committed and I am so here for it.

Another wonderful Veronica Speedwell adventure, this has definitely become one of my all time fav comfort series and hope there are many more to come.

I absolutely adore Veronica and Stoker so I was shattered at the end of the last book when there was a terrible misunderstanding and Stoker left Veronica. Since the end of the last book, he’s been wandering and working. Veronica has been pouting at home and hoping he would return. When Stoker’s older brother requires assistance, Veronica goes in search of Stoker with his brother in tow. While this leads to a chilly reunion, Stoker agrees to help solve the current mystery: someone is threatening and killing a group of Tiberius’ friends. He only agrees once Tiberius dangles the opportunity to have Stoker work on a giant iguanodon. Tiberius then invites the rest of his friends for a house party, hopefully luring in the murderer.

The mystery is a good one. The suspects are reserved to a small group, so it might be easy to identify the killer. However, sometimes it’s not always about who did the crime but why they did it. This is what occupied my mind while I read. Knowing the murderer didn’t ruin the read for me at all because the motive was more interesting to solve.

I loved the new host of characters, along with some old friends. Stoker’s brothers are fantastic and so different. I love to see how each interacts with Stoker and Veronica so differently. Tiberius’ friends are an interesting crowd and make great suspects. I loved seeing JJ and Julian again. All of these characters in a new setting - the Templeton Vane family home - is wonderful.

Stoker and Veronica’s relationship is shaky again. I was a bit annoyed at first because we’ve already had this happen in earlier books. However, I realized that this time was different. Stoker is done chasing and loving Veronica. For a change, he wants her to put in some effort. She has received love for far too long, never being a true equal in the relationship. Poor Stoker just needs to be loved and she has been giving so little. While she has her reasons, Veronica needed to show Stoker that she loved him as much as he loved her. He needs a grand gesture. It’s sweet when she finally comes through for him.

I know these books have varying degrees of good to them but they are all shades of five stars for me.

Veronica and Stoker are at it again in a new adventure trying to protect Stoker’s brother from someone trying to murder him. Twenty years ago, during a tour of the continent with friends, Tiberius and his school friends stopped at the family estate found a dinosaur and had one of their number fall to his death. It was deemed an accident but now twenty years later a few of his companions have died mysteriously and Tiberius has received some clippings stating he is next.

But first, Veronica and Tiberius had to go and get Stoker from his hiatus in the forests of Bavaria. Let’s just say it was not exactly the reunion that Veronica was hoping for. Then off to Tiberius’s family seat and a house party to commemorate his lost friend and put all the players into the same location in hopes of finding the killer.
“Be brave. You have everything you need,” I murmured to no one in particular. “Everything indeed.” Excelsior!”

So now with all the player assembled Veronica can do what she does best and sleuth around to discover who is at the heart of the plot, while also trying to keep Tiberius safe. With a few other characters from previous books showing up it is a good time. I always like seeing JJ and what she is working on in her exuberance to get a story.

Stoker has come to a decision where Veronica is concerned though. He has proved his love time and time again, now it is her turn to woo him and she is going to have to set aside some of her independence and figure out how to trust they are to move forward. Stoker know the women he loves well and he will not let her take any shortcuts or seductions this time. He wants everything or nothing and the ball is in her court. Hopefully Veronica is not too smart for her own good in this regard.

Another solid story with a nice twist. I enjoyed it overall and while frustrated with Veronica and her stubbornness when it comes to revealing her heart I did like the overall story and the ending. It was fun hanging out with three of the Templeton-Veins in their ancestral home seeing the brothers become closer to each other. It is good to see Stoker find a place in his family and comfort in it. Also, a very cute ending to the book as well and a wooing that was worth the wait.

3.5

I was torn on where I landed with this review of the long-standing Veronica Speedwell series. On the one hand, the mystery is solid -- tighter, in fact, than the majority of mysteries in this series. The cast of victims and villains is interesting and complex enough that it kept me flipping pages with lots of enthusiasm in this closed-setting whodunit. Other readers have pointed out an Agatha Christie-like quality to the process of solving this murder mystery, and I find that an apt comparison. For instance, there is a scene midway through the book where a character gasps at dinner and pitches to the floor, having been poisoned by someone at the table, and that scene alone is gleefully pure Christie at her best.

At the start of the book, Stoker's brother Tiberious appears to be the target of an assassin holding a grudge from many years ago when a member of group of friends dies mysteriously at the Templeton-Vane childhood residence. Tiberious, either foolishly or brilliantly, decides to assemble an eccentric cast of characters, along with Veronica and Stoker, to his ancestral home to expose the killer among them.

There is very little new here for fans of the series, except that this seems to be the requisite moment in a series when Veronica and Stoker are at a relationship impasse now that they have become lovers and confessed their love for each other. While book seven ended on a cliffhanger with Stoker leaving Veronica and their relationship viability in question, this eighth book is designed to reset the course for them. I will admit that I felt frustrated with the relationship conflict here though and also found it distracting from the mystery. For one, Stoker is off sulking for much of the novel, leaving Veronica alone to sort out clues, which seemed unprofessional for two people who identify as detectives more or less now. Plus, Stoker's deep pouting puts his brother's life in danger, so there's that. Stoker has the upper hand in the relationship dynamic for most of this book. Veronica has wronged him and it's Veronica's fault that they have relationship problems. It's hard to deny that, but it's also annoying that Raybourn chose this conflict that depicts Stoker as the emotionally intuitive one and Veronica feeling inadequate. I sympathize with Stoker to a degree in that Veronica is a challenging person and could be more open with him, but I found his response to this problem mired in games. I'm not sure if other readers lost patience with him, but for the first time in the series, I kind of wanted Veronica to go solo. The appearance of intrepid girl reporter JJ allowed me briefly to entertain thoughts of an interesting new series featuring a female mystery-solving duo.

Alas, there is a grand gesture and the book ends happy for now. There will be more in the series - at least one more. I'm guessing a confrontation with Veronica's royal father must be coming our way?

I truly love a Veronica Speedwell novel, but this one fell a little short for me. The mystery was, as always, on point - well paced, solvable but not too easy, and just a lot of fun. The interpersonal interactions, though, were where I thought this installment lacked. I think that this book is meant to be a bit of a grovel for Veronica, used to getting her way with Stoker and now thwarted by her inability to open up to him. She’s so fiercely and purposefully independent that I think it’s hard for Raybourn to get her character to compromise - but to me, that’s exactly what needs to happen for them to be happy. I don’t have any doubt that Veronica and Stoker are endgame, but I would love to see them happily settled (in whatever way that means for them) sooner rather than later, which I recognize is the romance reader in me.

Regardless, I think that for the pacing of this series and Veronica’s character arc, this would have been the appropriate book for her to have some personal revelations about how to approach her relationship with Stoker to make it a more validating experience for him, and that didn’t happen.

Raybourn is such a talented writer, and I’m very emotionally attached to this series. I’m never not picking up the next one!

Thank you Berkley and Edelweis for the ARC!

3.75 stars. I was excited to get approved again for the next installment in the series. While an overall improvement from the last one (in my opinion), it didn't really pick up for me until the second half. Possibly related to the lack of banter between characters? At least the ending was an improvement over the last one lol.

A new Veronica Speedwell and Stoker tale, set in Victorian, England, ALWAYS makes me rejoice. This 8th in the mystery series features the idiosyncratic couple -- she a butterfly hunter, he a natural historian -- who unite to root out a culprit threatening to kill Stoker's brother and members of his Seven Sinners club (two of whom just died.)

This fine mystery can be read solo, but will make you want to go back and devour every intriguing title in the series. I especially love the couple's spirited repartee and quirky relationship ... sometimes on, sometimes off, but always compelling. Another Raybourn winner!

Thanks to author Deanna Raybourn, Berkley Publishing, and NetGalley for the ARC. Opinions are mine.

The mystery took awhile to warm up for me with this one, and then the wrap-up was rather convenient. But in between, it was interesting enough, and I liked seeing J.J. again and seeing more of Stoker's home and meeting his younger brother and Nannie. I probably won't remember much of this mystery in a week or two.

But what carried the story was, of course, the ever evolving relationship between Veronica and Stoker. After the revelations of the previous book, Stoker took off, believing She's hilariously in denial over what him leaving means to her, and once she tracks with him with Tiberius in order to find out who is killing Tiberius's friends, Stoker puts his foot down with her. About time, too! He is not a simp and insists on Veronica making the next move.

This does feel like it could be the last one, though I hope it's not. 🤞🏼

I am disappointed. I quite liked the series but at the 8th book, I find it lacking the dimensions that drew me in in the beginning. (I had powered through all the books in one go so the story arc has been quite fresh in my mind.)

The mystery was too predictable, it wasn’t as fun as the previous books and I have spent the majority of the book severely annoyed with both Veronica and Stoker.

I wasn’t as looking forward to this book as I wanted and continued the series cautiously because I wasn’t sure what to expect. When the last book ended, I thought “Here we go again.” This on again/off again relationship issues between Veronica and Stoker is getting quite tedious. At 8 books in, and the stories spanning 3 years, one would think some serious maturing may have occurred. But it didn’t and I found both Veronica and Stoker quite immature in every aspect related to their relationship. Veronica’s affections really hasn’t shown through, except through her carnal daydreams and musings about Stoker (ok, we get it, she has an appetite but seriously…). This book spent more time describing how these two were avoiding each other than what Veronica truly felt. I no longer bought in how much she cared for Stoker and had seriously wished they should just end it. Despite what Stoker complained about Veronica, he was equally terrible at not making his point across without resorting to sarcasm and anger (immature). Veronica, on the other hand, too stubborn to try to understand and only had sex in her mind. Without any hints peppered throughout the book, she just all of a sudden came to a realization about everything at the end of the book (especially when the beginning of the book was spent too much on the impasse and then not much throughout the book). Confusing.

Another disappointment is that this book occurred in Stoker’s childhood home and Veronica’s first time visiting and I had hoped there would be some level of significance with regards to Stoker’s history - but there was nothing. It barely scratched the surface and the whole thing with Nanny was pointless - that also revealed nothing. We had spent a whole book dealing with Stoker’s tensions with his ex-wife (and that was truly a great book). This book would have been a great moment for Veronica to truly understand who Stoker was as a child (e.g. more in-depth revelations of his relationships with his parents and brothers).

Also, while I truly appreciate Veronica’s independence and feistiness in the face of late 19th century British society (it’s why I picked up the series), she has become a caricature of feminism. I can’t help but get the impression the author is trying to thwart any possibility of Veronica being too “feminine” or possibly “too woman” - if any at all. Veronica’s opinions about what women were “expected” to think or feel has become rather irritating. She vowed she will never sleep with an Englishman, and there she was with Stoker. She vowed she didn’t believe in love, and there she was with Stoker. So, what is wrong with her having a few traditional feminine and women qualities that she later realized she had?

Because of my annoyance with Veronica and Stoker, I had hoped the mystery will be more interesting and compensate for the lack of character development. Turned out the mystery fell flat for me. The reason for the murder mystery and the person the author chose to be the culprit was not as earth-shattering as I wished.

The only good thing I took away from this book is I have grown to like Tiberius and Merryweather (and the previous instances of introducing Sir Rupert, I liked him too). I find that I am now preferring the other Templeton-Vane brothers over Stoker - so much so that I want to hear their stories and what become of them. Yes, this is how annoyed I am with the Stoker character. (In fact, I liked Tiberius so much more that I wanted Veronica to just succumbed to his seductions.)

As the series went on, I started to get the impression the author is losing interest in progressing and developing the characters (why else bring back the chasm in the relationship?).

I had enjoyed the Lady Julia Grey series by Raybourn and saw a great progression of character development. I was sorry it ended (but it had been a good ending). I just didn’t feel the same about this series.

I love Stoker

A little too perfect. It annoys me how Stoker just intuits things and Veronica has to work for them. But, meh. The cliffhanger from the previous book resolved (and I think it perfectly reasonable that she thought she was giving him the time he wanted!). A good mystery. I knew Veronica would be correct in her bet, but how was going to be tricky. I’ll keep reading them all.

Four and a Half Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭑
A Sinister Revenge by Deanna Raybourn is the eighth book in her popular Veronica Speedwell series, this can be read as a standalone. However, reading the series in order will give a better character background that would increase your enjoyment of the story.

Story Recap:
Veronica must help her friend, Tiberius, Lord Templeton-Vane, find a murderer before he becomes the target. Tiberius is the brother of Veronica’s partner, Stoker. But before she investigates the murder, she must find her partner, Stoker, who has been working in Bavaria since their romantic relationship came to an impasse.

Tiberius invites all remaining members of his old group of friends, The Seven Sinners to his home, to try and flush out the murder. Veronica and Stoker are on hand to aid the investigation. Someone is trying to kill off the members of the Seven Sinners and they need to find out who it is before Tiberius becomes one of the victims.

My Thoughts:
I always enjoy going back into Veronica’s world, and Sinister Revenge is no exception. I missed Veronica’s and Stoker’s interactions at the beginning of the book as they weren’t speaking to each other much, but that was rectified later in the book, as we got back to their delightful banter.

I loved seeing Tiberius again, and I like that he knows exactly how to push his brother's buttons! The three of them together make for some terrific banter and humor.

The mystery was interesting, and I didn’t figure it out until Veronica did. I enjoyed getting to know more of Stoker’s family too.

Recommendation:
I highly recommend A Sinister Revenge to anyone who enjoys historical mysteries. I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Picking up about six months after the conclusion of the previous adventure, Veronica is traveling through Italy with Tiberius, collecting butterflies. Stoker remains absent and unheard from after he left following their last adventure when he thought Veronica was married (she’s not and never was).

After feeling a bit unsettled/unfinished after the previous Veronica Speedwell mystery, I was a bit apprehensive going into A Sinister Revenge. However, my worries were for naught. Ms. Raybourn returns to the magical formula of intriguing mystery balanced with just the right amount of romance.

The best parts of A Sinister Revenge are why I love this series so much. We follow Veronica as she uses her brilliant brain to test out hypotheses and ferret out a killer (or two). She uses science and deduction, yet she’s prone to emotional outbursts, which give her heart. I love the scene when she thinks she’s cornered the killer and goes into her berserker mode, jumping into danger to catch a killer and protect those she cares for most. She begrudgingly admits her mistakes and more importantly, she makes much overdo amends to some of the characters in A Sinister Revenge. She realizes that she’s cut herself off to protect her heart, and that she has genuine friends and love in her life; those who won’t hurt her. It’s been a realization that is long overdue, and it’s so rewarding to witness.

The mystery involves Stoker’s eldest brother, Tiberius, who tells our intrepid duo that a good friend died on the family estate twenty years ago, and now it looks like someone is out for revenge, killing off all those who were there that fateful night. Tiberius implores Veronica and Stoker to protect him and uncover the truth, but then invites all of the suspects to his estate and confronts them. Merryweather, Stoker’s youngest sibling, is also a part of the story, and we learn more about Stoker’s childhood and family. I absolutely enjoyed the family dynamics and glimpses of true affection amongst the brothers, yet there is also the usual tension, especially since we are given hints that Tiberius and Merryweather may not enjoy their given lots in life.

Narration: The story is shared via Veronica’s first person POV, with the narrator and Veronica’s dialogue one and the same. Ms. Masters alters all dialogue and her range of accents is excellent and sound authentic to this untrained ear. She changes her voice based on the characters’ regional and socio-economical background. Ms. Masters’s performance of Veronica is perfect. She nails Veronica’s no nonsense, adventurous attitude. But she also captures Veronica’s just-under-the-surface vulnerability. Additionally, she gives Stoker a sexy, unfettered gruffness that sharpens with concern when Veronica is in danger or when the pair is sparring. While Ms. Masters expertly performs a multitude of voices, many of her male characters sound the same, especially the Templeton-Vane brothers.

A Sinister Revenge is a well-written, exciting mystery with a touch of romance. The story continues Veronica and Stoker’s journey, bringing readers maturity of character and exciting new sparks.

A Sinister Revenge is the 8th installment in author Deanna Raybourn's Veronica Speedwell series. Months after Stoker walked away from Veronica, and decided to clear his head, Veronica Speedwell, and Tiberius Templeton-Vane travel all the way to Bavaria hoping to find the elusive young brother. Meanwhile, Stoker has been on the hunt for a mythological creature known as Wolpertinger. In German folklore, a Wolpertinger is an animal said to inhabit the alpine forests of Bavaria and Baden-Wurttemberg in southern Germany.

In the last book Veronica and Stoker parted ways, Veronica to hunt butterfly collections in Italy with Tiberius, Stoker’s brother, and Stoker off to hunt a specimen in Germany. However, a threat to Tiberius and the Seven Sinners, a group of Tiberius’ old friends bring them all back together again to the family estate, Cherboys, in Devon to expose the killer. Years ago while vacationing at Cherboys one of their members fell off a cliff to their death, a tragedy ruled an terrible accident, but now an unknown is claiming he was murdered and that one of them were responsible. So far, two members have died in recent “accidents” and there are three left including Tiberius. Tiberius asked for Veronica and Stoker’s help to unmask the killer before anyone else dies.

There’s no shortage of suspects when Tiberius invites the surviving members for a stay. Veronica and Stoker go about their investigation separately as Stoker is still hurt by Veronica and doesn’t want to just sweep the past events under the rug. I have to say I didn’t blame him. In the past books Veronica has been a little frustrating to me, whereas Stroker gives his all to her, she hold back. It was a little disappointing they weren’t working together for much of the book, but I did enjoy the sleuthing. Veronica has a sharp, humorous mind so I always enjoy her conversations and her mental musings. The writing is very witty.

The descriptions of Cherboys by the cliffs of Devon and the village of Dearsley sounded beautiful and each of the characters assembled were interesting! I kept trying to figure out the culprit right along with Veronica. I was happy with how all things turned out, Veronica finally coming to some personal revelations and the case was wrapped up as well. A Sinister Revenge is book eight in the series and it’s one that needs to read in order. I read an e-copy, but the audios narrated by Angèle Masters are a fantastic way to go too!

This series is going strong with another compelling adventure for Veronica and Stoker. I immediately grab anything Deanna Raybourn writes, and I have yet to be disappointed.

Despite romantic troubles, Veronica & Stoker agree to attend his brother, Tiberius, Lord Templeton-Vane dinner party to hunt for a murder. It seems Tiberius has received a message that includes the obituaries of two recently deceased members of his old group of friends known as the Seven Sinners. Tiberius in fact believes one of them wants to kill him, blaming him and others for their friend’s death.

Oh, how I hated seeing Veronica and Stoker at odds, but it proved humorous watching these two trade barbs, looks and yes, even the occasional kiss. Don’t worry overmuch, the two are simply stubborn.

As for the case, bets were placed, and each was working the case on their own. It seems a vexing reporter lady is also in their midst. The story’s mystery was well done with suspense, murder and a little mayhem. I must admit I was kept guessing, and loved how events clicked into place when all was revealed. Well done, Ms. Raybourn.

I loved seeing the Templeton-Vane brothers together and learning a wee bit more about Stoker’s life. It is always a delight to spend time with these characters and we were treated to some familiar ones. Like a certain pastry chef. My stomach grumbles just thinking about it.

While each novel in the Veronica Speedwell series features its own case/mystery, I recommend reading them in the order of their release. Relationships, characters and the overall story arc enhanced my overall enjoyment of each novel.

I just enjoy Veronica and Stocker so much. This time we go to Stoker’s boyhood home and an accident that Tiberius thinks wasn’t. The mystery twines its way into Veronica’s sensibilities. A grand mystery!
