I'm torn on what to give this book. It probably deserves 5 stars but I just can't do it. The writing was excellent, I've been reading all of Lizzy Fords books since she started a mere 2-ish years ago and you can see how she has grown as story teller. Her stories are always excellent, but this one flowed very well, I think better than the others. The characters are ones you fall in love with. From the main ones of Decker and Summer, to the minor characters of Biji and Sam. If they are named in the book, they typically have a purpose. I highly recommend this book to lovers of paranormal romance, YA books, or just good writing all together.
Now for the actual book review - this will contain spoilers, so please stop reading if you don't want to know what happens in this book. At the end of the spoiler, there are some "***" and I will finish the review, so you can skip down there if you like. There are lots of twists and turns and I don't want to give it away if you like surprises.
*BEGIN SPOILER*
So Summer comes from an orphanage, hasn't had any friends, nor a boyfriend and now she is in a magick school where she belongs - all very believable. There are two types of magic - light and dark. Light = good, Dark = bad and it all needs to balance (Lizzy is a fan of writing about balance). And you have to choose through tests which kind of magic you are - do good - Light, do bad - Dark, and once you are Dark, you can never go back to Light. So basically, one mistake and your are screwed. Her powers reside with air and earth of the five elements types (air, earth, fire, water, spirit) and apparently she is very powerful - how and why we don't know yet (Lizzy is good at holding back details where you want them and then bringing them out in later books). She at first likes the twin Brother Beck, then goes to the other twin Decker because he makes her magick 'sing' - again - it fits with the story. She finds a fawn (baby deer - and I have to say it is never good when animals are introduced early in a book or in a movie), nurses it back to health, all good here I guess. But apparently this is her "test" to be on the side of Light, which I don't believe one little bit. It was too easy. I think the test is when someone kills the deer (hence the early introduction of the animal), and surprisingly she fails the test and turns to dark side. This is the part of book that bugs me. From here, she is dark - oh I forgot to mention that her boyfiend Decker is the collector of dark magic souls and he now has to go collect her soul. Oh and since she put the deer out of it's misery and killed it in the end, he also has to kill her. Talk about unforgiving rules here. So anyway, he goes to get her, he can't do it, and somehow (it is explained how in the book, I just don't want to type it all out) Summer ends up going off the end of a cliff and dying. BOO! But wait - - maybe she isn't dead, maybe there is a way back from the dark side, because you see, a dark master cannot be with a dark witch; he can only be with a light witch, to balance out the evil in him. I have never been a fan of too much drama, I like some drama, even a fair amount of drama, but my rule of thumb is don't mess with the heroine in the book. This is definitely messing with Summer.

OMG!!! What a freaking amazing book! I wish I could have given this book an even higher rating. This book had me hooked from the beginning and still hasn't let me go. I'm now in love with this series. Honestly, I don't even want to finish my review, I want to start the next one yesterday. LIZZY FORD I WANT TO MARRY YOU!!!! That's how amazing is book was. I'd call it new adult because of the numerous sexy, turn- you-on parts. Not gonna lie, kind of wish I was Summer. This book was the perfect romance. It was so sweet and cute, but powerful and kick- ass at the same time. Also I just want to throw this out there, I HATE DAWN!! I hope she rots in hell for being such a bitch. ( I know she isn't real but i still hate her).
Then there is the ending. The cliff hanger of all cliff hangers, and almost literally. I hated the ending. I definitely would have been bawling my face off if I wasn't at work right now. I really have no negative comments, so I fill up the rest of the space with why this book rock my socks.

- the hottest make character ever, has a twin and he rides a Harley.
- the main character is a brunette, the villian is a blonde lol
- it contains both, male and female witches
- there are cute animals present
- yeti-like creatures are involved

I was given a copy of Dark Summer by Lizzy Ford in exchange for an honest review. This was Lizzy's first book in the YA genre that started out as a dare by YA author Julia Crane. Let me tell you after reading this first book in the series you would think this is her genre of choice. The pace of the story was free flowing never a stagnant moment. You were constantly captivated by the bases of each and every one of her characters. She developed the characters with such care that you couldn't help but love them well maybe not all of them. Hint hint DAWN lol no spoilers from me. Is was touching that a poor orphan Summer could find her place and hope in this new school. The magic that she shared with Decker you couldn't help but route for them. Poor Lizzy was probably having a hard time sleeping after I finished reading it because she probably heard me screaming at the ending. I am definitely not one for cliffhangers I am like a kid in a toy store with no money very, very impatient but I can not wait till book 2 is released. I highly recommend this book to all ages she was able to stimulate the senses. Thank you Lizzy for allowing me to enter Summer's world and I hope to continue on the journey.

I was lucky enough to get my hands of a pre-release copy of Dark Summer. Lizzy Ford is one of my favorite writers, and she outdid herself on this one.

I have read most of Lizzy Ford's books and looked forward to this series. Like everyone else lately I've been reading a lot of YA, and overall I liked the book, but I had a few issues that caused it to be a 3.5 star read for me.
I think overall there seemed to be a slight disconnect with the teen's in the story. Sometimes acting to be several years younger than depicted and at other times acting several years beyond their maturity level. The character development, especially in terms of the character relationships was not really developed and a bit abrupt. And it frustrated me that Summer had a hard time connecting point A to point B unless it was specifically spelled out for her. In general I felt more invested in the relationship between the two brothers and in the upcoming difficulties they had before them, than in Summer herself.
And I felt the ending could have ended a whole section before it did, I didn't really want anything past the large dramatic finale at the end. It didn't make me want to read the next in the series any more than I already did, it just took the ending and deflated it for me.
I will be reading the next book, mostly because I want to find out what happens between the two brothers.
I would like to extend a hearty Thank You to the Author who provided this book to me in return for an honest review.

Weak premise, poor plot. Come on now, the Los Angeles and Orange County Social Services Agency can't afford to send an orphan to local schools, so they send her to a boarding school instead? Right.

I was so lucky to get LOADS of goodies from Lizzy Ford and her assistant and Dark Summer was a part of those goodies! I loved this book! I thought that it went at the right pace and it held my attention all of the time! I absolutely loved that Dark Summer was told from Summer and Decker's point of views as it made it even more interesting! I loved the characters! Summer was the main character of Dark Summer and I really liked her! I felt really sorry for her as she had been through a lot! I loved Decker! He was hot, protective and swoon worthy! His twin brother, Beck was completely different to what I was expecting! He was nice but I thought that he was quite nasty at points in the book towards Summer! I actually thought that there was going to be a love triangle in this book but I was so happy that there wasn't! The plot was amazing and very original! I couldn't wait to find out more about the plot as the book progressed! The ending was massive and it literally has me begging for the next book in this series! I would like to say a MASSIVE thank you to Lizzy and her assistant, Jennifer for sending me Dark Summer and all the rest of my goodies!

This is the start to another great and addictive series from Lizzy Ford. From the first words of the book, I was hooked! There is everything in the book from suspense to romance. I absolutely love the creativity and ability of the author to bring these stories to life.
I can not wait for the release of the 2nd book because I am so anxious to see what is next in store for the series.

I received a paperback copy of this book from the author. Special thanks go to Jesabella, who hosted a giveaway for this book. Withouth her blog post, I wouldn't have discovered this great series!
Summer is a sixteen-year-old orphan girl, who has been sent from school to school in the latest years. The reason - wherever she goes, bad things start happening. However, this new boarding school she has been sent to seems to be the perfect place for her. She discovers that she is a witchling and her elements are air and earth. She finally makes a friend and falls in love with Decker - a Dark student who has a Light twin. But will these all last forever?
The magic system is a little odd and could have been better explained and detailed. There are Light witchlings and Dark witchlings. It appears that neither are fully Light, nor fully Dark, and one cannot live without the other or the balance would be destroyed, a concept that I loved. There are 3 Light Laws and 3 Dark Laws. Decker is destined to become Master of Night and Fire, and Beck, the twin, the Master of Light - those who are supposed to ensure the laws are not being broken. Each witchling has an element, some have two, very rarely three. These elements are: water, fire, earth, air and spirit.
Summer is a very interesting character. She is as kind as a caring mother, but, as expected, she is hesitant to open up to those around here, always afraid that she will be sent away, to another school, as she always is. Being rather naive, she can't see when someone is just pretending to be nice to her (as Dawn is), oblivious to the dangers she is exposing herself to. She also finds problems in accepting magic as a part of her and unleashing her powers. I found it a little bit silly that she fears Decker is an evil person just because he is a Dark student, but I suppose this is only natural as nobody seems to be willing to explain everything properly to her.
Lizzy describes her characters very well, a quality which not many young adult novels have. I could really picture each and every one of them, from the minion, dark-haired, big-chested Summer to the yeti-like Sam, the creature that lives in the forest and is some kind of balance keeper if I understood correctly. Their clothes, behaviour, attitude and lifestyles are very realistic.
Reading this book made me flip pages after pages, and even at the slow parts, I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen. I was very enthusiastic whenever I had a little free time to read, very eager to finish it. Now that I did, I am very anxious for the second novel, which will hopefully be released this autumn. The ending has a HUGE cliffhanger, so I will have to try very hard to forget about it as soon as I can, otherwise I will often find myself looking for news about its release on the internet.
I give this book four vanilla flowers out of five, as it had its flaws, but I definitely recommend it to any magic/YA/paranormal romance lovers out there.

Summer este o fată orfană de şaisprezece ani, care a fost mutată în şcoală după şcoală în ultimii ani. Motivul - oriunde merge, se întâmplă lucruri rele. Cu toate aceasta, noua şcoală cu internat unde este trimisă pare a fi locul perfect pentru ea. Summer descoperă că e o vrăjitoare şi că elementele ei sunt aerul şi pământul. În sfârşit îşi face o prietenă şi se îndrăgosteşte de Decker - un student al Întunericului, care are un geamăn al Luminii. Dar vor dura toate astea o veşnicie?
Sistemul magic este puţin mai ciudat şi ar fi putut fi explicat şi detaliat mai bine. Există vrăjitori ai Întunericului şi vrăjitori ai Luminii. Se pare că niciunii nu sunt în totalitate buni sau răi, şi nu pot exista unii fără alţii, altfel echilibrul ar fi distrus, concept ce mie mi-a plăcut. Există trei legi ale luminii, şi trei ale întunericului. Decker e destinat să devină Maestru al Nopţii şi a Focului, iar Beck, geamănul, Maestru al Luminii - cei care trebuie să se asigure că legile nu sunt încălcate. Fiecare vrăjitor are un element, unii au două, foarte rar trei. Aceste elemente sunt apa, focul, pământul, aerul şi spiritul.
Summer e un personaj foarte interesant. E bună ca pâinea caldă, dar, cum e de aşteptat, ezită în a-şi deschide sufletul faţă de alţii, mereu temându-se că va fi trimisă la o altă şcoală, aşa cum se întâmplă de fiecare dată. Fiind destul de naivă, ea nu-şi dă seama când cineva doar se preface că e drăguţ cu ea (aşa cum face Dawn), nu vede pericolele la care se expune. Are, de asemenea, probleme în a accepta magia ca parte din ea şi a-şi elibera puterile. Mi s-a părut puţin prostească teama ei că Decker e malefic doar pentru că e student al Întunericului, dar presupun că asta e normal din moment ce nimeni nu are voinţa de a-i explica totul cum trebuie.
Lizzy îşi descrie personajele foarte bine, o calitate pe care nu multe romane pentru adolescenţi o au. Am putut să vizualizez cum arată fiecare dintre ei, de la Summer cea minionă cu părul închis la culoare şi cu pieptul mare, la Sam cel-ca-un-yeti, creatura care locuieşte în pădure şi care e un fel de gardian al echilibrului, dacă am înţeles eu bine. Hainele, comportamentul, atitudinea şi stilul de viaţă al personajelor sunt foarte realiste.
Această carte m-a făcut să întorc filă după filă, şi, chiar şi în părţile mai lente, de-abia aşteptam să văd ce urma să se întâmple. Am fost foarte entuziasmată de fiecare dată când am avut timp de citit, foarte nerăbdătoare să o termin. Acum că am terminat-o, de-abia aştept al doilea roman, care, să sperăm, va apărea în această toamnă. Sfârşitul e PLIN de suspans, aşa că voi încerca din greu să uit despre asta cât de repede pot, altfel mă voi trezi căutând des pe internet noutăţi despre lansarea cărţii.
Îi dau patru flori de vanilie din cinci acestei cărţi, fiindcă a avut scăpările ei, dar o recomand cu siguranţă tuturor iubitorilor de magie/YA/romane de dragoste paranormale.

I fell in love with Summer right off, but yet I felt bad with her being poor and being ridiculed every time she turns around. It really hit home for me as I used to be that girl. I didn't feel sorry for her for long as I continued reading I noticed how pure and strong she really was. When she first meets Decker (loved him right off as well) sparks flew and I just kept thinking that Summer is finally going to get her happiness, she does but not for long. This story reminded me of my two favorite love stories of all time "Titanic" and "Romeo and Juliet", needless to say Lizzy ford you have made a new fan for life. The end of the book had OMG moments, some I just couldn't handle! Needing to get my hands on "Autumn Storm" is now a must. BRAVO Lizzy Ford on getting me addicted to a new series! Oh and the little bambi pictures that were in the book when changing scenes were so cute!!!

LOVED IT! Sat down to read it and finished it in about an hour and a half. I didn't even want to take the time to write the review right after I finished it. I just opened the next book and started reading because I wanted to see what happened. I am officially in love with the series. I have finished all three within 24 hours. The story really drew me in and I found myself rooting for all of the characters and HATING DAWN. Tricky how she came back. I have seriously fallen in love with Lizzy Ford's books. They are perfect to just sit down and read in a day (or multiple in a day). This series was a little different than some of her others, but FABULOUS. I wish the books would go on forever because I love every singe one of her characters and just want to know more! I loved how as soon as Summer arrived, she hints at Beck and then Decker appears and COMPLETELY changes your mind about everything you thought. Even evil is more complicated than we think it is. Summer's self-consciousness is completely relatable even if the magick part isn't. Decker and Summer end up evoking so much emotion and the ending just made me want to scream! I won't say any more, but Lizzy Ford, massive props on this book. I loved it.

Dark Summer was my first Lizzy Ford experience. I call it an experience and not just a "read" or a "book" because it is so much more than that. Dark Summer was hands down the best book I have read in years. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. I sometimes hate recommending certain books because I am not sure how the other person will like it, but I recommend this book to everyone on the planet. Lizzy Ford is an amazing talent; she has a way of sucking you right into the story. I honestly can't explain it well enough with words (I am no Lizzy Ford) you just have to read and see for yourself. This book has romance, betrayal, humor, lust, love, confusion...you name it, and it's probably in Dark Summer. But in no way is it too much all at once. Dark Summer made me fall in love with evil characters, it made me scream out loud, it had me on an emotional roller-coaster (and I loved every second of it). I am anxiously awaiting the next book because Dark Summer leaves you on quite the cliff hanger. *Stands up and gives Lizzy Ford a round of applause*.

The secrets in Dark Summer are intriguing, well crafted & revealed at just the right pace to keep you reading. I enjoyed every minute I spent in the world that Lizzy Ford has created here & would have been disappointed when I reached the final page, if I hadn’t known that there was more to the series.
Summer is a great character. Her insecurities due to being an orphan & having a ‘gift’ that causes her more trouble than it appears to be worth, are totally understandable. I connected with her quickly & found myself more than once, wishing I could impart a little of my life experience to her, when she was faced with two options & appeared to be leaning towards the wrong one.
One thing I found help make the story more believable is the fact that the author did not fall back on the cliché that everyone whose magic is light, must be good & everyone whose magic is dark, must be bad. Just like in real life, there are shades of grey in the world that Ms. Ford creates in this series. Dark Summer should be required reading for teen girls.

It's been a while since I read both YA and a paranormal that really capture my attention. Thank god for Dark summer! It was different and so entertaining and that cliffhanger! I'm so glad all the books in this series are out, I'm immediately jumping to the 2nd book!

Both of these books were authored by Lizzy Ford and I must say that I am very impressed with her level of imagination, along with her ability to portray the worlds and spirits of Light and Dark.

AUTUMN STORM: Perfect. The golden colors with the hint of orange is a perfect representation of the season of Autumn. Beautiful.
WHAT I LIKED ABOUT DARK SUMMER: The twins were so fantastic and realistic. I love anything with reference to the seasons. I’m so in love with Decker that I was getting jealous of the girls in the book (He reminds me of a younger version of Darynda Jones’s Reyes Farrow in the grave books: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/first...). I also really enjoyed the new “modern” Hogwarts she sort of created. Being of Wiccan belief, I enjoyed the realistic representations in this book. For example, (Spoiler alert) “Amber hopped off the table and drew a crystal and some sage from the bag between them. She lit the sage, tired the crystal to its base, and blew on the fiery herb until smoke puffed towards Summer. The rich, earthy scent was comforting.” Great job Lizzy! Also, thank you for being brave enough to include sexual relations between minors; it made the books that much more relate-able.
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE ABOUT DARK SUMMER: Nothing!
WHAT I LIKED ABOUT AUTUMN STORM: First of all, let me say that book #2 was 110% better than #1. While I didn’t dislike book #1, I gave it an A- rather than an A+- because of the… speed, I guess; there were a few moments in book one when I felt it progressed a little slowly. However, that being said, book #2 did not do this at all and that is why it got that little + sign next to its A. I could not put this book down, but was forced to so I could go to sleep. Finishing it this morning was like finishing a very important mission; my life depending on it… That’s also why I drank 3 cups of coffee! I would not give up until I finished this amazing book! It was powerful and some scenes even left me speechless from their impact. It was highly emotional; it made me cry. laugh, worry, hope, and cheer for the characters and the story itself. I enjoyed the way the author conveyed subtle references to book #1 without overdoing the reiteration of Dark Summer. I do, however, find myself wondering about Biji more and more as I read this series and hope to see her story soon; or at least a short novella about her- hint hint, wink wink.
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE ABOUT AUTUMN STORM: While there was nothing about the actual story that I didn’t like, I did find quite a few editing errors, but I sensed that the author was just as engrossed in writing it as I was in reading it and her fingers typed faster than her brain could comprehend. None of these errors took away from the story, but rather added to it. Like I said, I sensed that the author was seeing these scenes in her head and her fingers were flying across the keyboard without her control… This, made it obvious that the scenes were just as emotional to the author as they were to the reader and made me realize just how much the characters meant to her as she was writing and probably still do.
ADDITIONAL NOTES: This author has amazing talent and I believe she will continue to write amazing stories. I will definitely be on the lookout for the next book and be waiting impatiently until I can read about Decker, Beck, Summer, and Biji again!

This is one of those books where I bounce back and forth between frustrated and enamored.
Enamored: The idea of witchlings and twin Masters of the Light and Dark
Frustrated: The world building just wasn't there... I had so many unanswered questions! How do these witches get their powers? Are there lots of witchlings? Is there some sort of hierarchy? Are witchlings actually human? What's with the "Sams"?
Equally frustrating, I felt like aspects of this story had been done before: Paranormal teens with the power to control an element go to a special school to learn about their history and power (Vampire Academy); a girl must decide by her seventeenth birthday if she will go to the Light or the Dark (Caster Chronicles); a boy with Dark tendencies and uncontrollable power needs an innocent girl to balance him and show him the redeeming power of love(every YA-pnr ever)
Enamored: Hot twins!
Frustrated: Twins named Beck and Decker. No one shortens Decker's name... Wonder why?
Enamored: Decker and Summer were super cute. Decker, actually, was the best thing about this book. I love a bad boy with vulnerability beyond simply his love for a girl. His task as Master of Fire and Night is pretty intense and it was interesting to watch him deal with the consequences of his birthright.
Frustrated: Summer. I admit, I'm hard to please when it comes to female protags but I think that's because there is an art to writing them. It takes a finesse that can easily become heavy-handed. For example, some authors assume the only way a female character can come across as strong is if she's snarky with anger issues. The flip side to this -- and exactly what happened in this book -- are the authors who want to portray a heroine as innocent and good and instead create a heroine who comes off as a victim with self-esteem issues. Summer is the kind of girl who assumes that everything is her fault, blames herself when the mean girls are mean to her, and actually asks her boyfriend DURING SEX if he still wants to be with her because she is "fat." When Summer visits the mall she is mesmerized by "all the pretty colors." I shit you not.
Sometimes these characters are fun because you get to watch them grow some backbone and I think that's what Ford has planned for Summer. Or at least I hope so. Because for most of this book I wanted to yell at this girl and slap her in the back of the head. But then I felt guilty for thinking that because Summer would probably just blame herself anyway.
Enamored: Normal teen drama but with superpowers
Frustrated: Unoriginal teen drama that had nothing to do with said superpowers. Jealous that your boyfriend likes the new girl? Slept with my boyfriend? Shunned me at the mall?

There was enough about this series that I enjoyed that I'll read the next book. Here's hoping Autumn is better than Summer!

I Loved Lizzy Ford's books and this one was no different. However, Summer was definitely NOT the type of Heroines I prefer. She was quite a damsel in distress and most of all, a person who allowed someone to bully her and accepted it. Not that I faulted her personalities. Her characters was actually understandable and appropriate with her childhood history. A girl who had nothing and wanted to be optimistic that good things came her ways. She was just too naive and wanting too much to be good and accepted. Decker was a good Hero for her. A totally dark bad boy type. Nothing unexpected but I loved the fact that there was no complicated love triangle between Summer and the Twin Turners... much. That's what I love most about Lizzy Ford's Style. No Matter how the Heroines might whine or sometimes acted childish, they were mostly decisive of who they fell in love with and their chemistry were often sickeningly sweet and romantic which I admittedly liked despite being totally cheesy. Same goes here. Although Summer might find Beck more attractive or more 'suitable' for her, she eventually went with her heart albeit with the help of the situation.
The magical world was very interesting and had so much potential but I thought the story was focused on a little too much at the relationships and the high school dramas. Both Turner Twins were not exactly the totally swoon-worthy perfect type of Heroes. Their actions were pretty much childish and irresponsible as well but I guessed that was to be expected since they were 17 turned 18 while Summer was 16 turned 17. Overall, I actually liked the book. I loved Lizzy Ford styles and no matter how annoying and frustrated I might get with her characters, I still found myself loving them in some annoying weird ways. They always had something I liked about them. Summer who was pretty much a damsel but I actually sympathized and understanding towards her actions. Decker who was supposed to be dark tall handsome but get shy and actually pretty much clueless at everything which was rather cute. Beck who made all the terrible dramatic mistakes, a typical handsome all-American boy who you couldn't help but liked because he was just genuinely nice. He just made too many stupid mistakes. Other characters complemented well into the story. The overall story was actually pretty enjoyable in the high school drama in magic school kinda way (Definitely Not Harry Potter Style!).... You know with the beautiful Bimbos as the Mean girls. Fortunately, there was actually serious life-and death fighting going on and not just typical girl-on-girl actions. That would totally made me rolled my eyes (again) as well as unconsciously throwing my kindle into the dustbin. Lizzy Ford was pretty good with the fighting description and I loved that she was bloody about it.
My Major and Super Major let down point was the Typical Cliche theories of Dark versus Light. I totally got the idea of Dark not equivalent to evil but why was dark black? Why all the dark witchlings had to wear black or gothic or dark heavy make-up? Why the light witchlings wore colorful clothes and totally beautiful in the typical southern belle kinda way. I could understand the dark or light personalities but why the fashion stream?!?!? that was totally too cliche for me.

Oh my, where to start? :) The first impression at the beginning: diving right into the story. The first impression after completing the book: OMG, I need the second book asap! Dark Summer by Lizzy Ford combines love, hate, problems of finding your place, of trust and making the right choice.
The book starts with Summer's arrival at a boarding school. She is picked up by Beck, whom she likes at once, since he seems to be a good-looking, good-natured and easy-going type of the guy. Shortly afterwards they are joined by his twin brother Decker, with dark eyes and dark and brooding personality. There is unmistakable rivalry between them. On her way through the forest Summer feels something (supernatural?) following her. As it appears to be some supernatural stuff has been going on in Summer's life for years, which is also the reason why she had to change school so often and was bullied by other kids. At this new school for Witchlings, people with magick in their blood, who can be either Light or Dark, she has a chance to find her place and to get control of her abilities. At first she can't really believe everything she is told, but as she gains experience she also opens her mind and accepts her nature.
Summer is an orphan who has experienced only bad things from other people, so she is afraid to make friends. But she feels drawn to the twins, especially Decker. Summer is scared because she does not really understand the difference between Light and Dark, and that being Dark doesn't mean being. And very soon Summer learns that Darkness needs its Light, and vice versa. And the most important lesson is that a simple benevolent decision can tip the scales, and put everyone's soul in danger.
It is an amazing story. It happens in a boarding school (I like YA stories about schools), it has some new supernatural stuff, not just your typical magic, vamps, weres or angels; there is a hypothetical love-triangle (which got me scared at the very beginning, since I am tired of being torn between the main heart interests), which has been resolved very quickly and almost painlessly; there is some loooooove (and lust ^^); there is some hope for a happy-ending. I absolutely loved the development of the relationship between Summer and Decker. You can easily see the connection, at the same time it was easy to understand their constraints towards each other. And Decker, despite his dark and brooding nature, is such a sweetheart. In comparison to him, Beck loses his points, though he is a nice guy. Hope he will put his big Master of Light panties on in the next book. Other supporting characters are depicted really well. I personally like Biji- she is fun and has the backbone.
All in all, a fantastic book that I'm definitely going to read again. And I absolutely can't wait to sink my teeth/eyes into the second one.

The book starts with Summer's arrival at a boarding school. She is picked up by Beck, whom she likes at once, since he seems to be a good-looking, good-natured and easy-going type of the guy. Shortly afterwards they are joined by his twin brother Decker, with dark eyes and dark and brooding personality. There is unmistakable rivalry between them. On her way through the forest Summer feels something (supernatural?) following her. As it appears to be some supernatural stuff has been going on in Summer's life for years, which is also the reason why she had to change school so often and was bullied by other kids. At this new school for Witchlings, people with magick in their blood, who can be either Light or Dark, she has a chance to find her place and to get control of her abilities. At first she can't really believe everything she is told, but as she gains experience she also opens her mind and accepts her nature.
Summer is an orphan who has experienced only bad things from other people, so she is afraid to make friends. But she feels drawn to the twins, especially Decker. Summer is scared because she does not really understand the difference between Light and Dark, and that being Dark doesn't mean being. And very soon Summer learns that Darkness needs its Light, and vice versa. And the most important lesson is that a simple benevolent decision can tip the scales, and put everyone's soul in danger.

This Author was recommended to me by a friend and I cannot express to her how grateful I am, This was the first book from Lizzy I purchased as the blurb was literally music to my ears and sounded exactly like my cup of tea.
The book starts off with you meeting Summer, who quite frankly has had a bit of a rubbish life, she has spent most of her life living in a foster home and going from school to school as they always end up asking her to leave, if only she could stop the strange things from happening that always seem to surround her.
Summer is on her way to a brand new school literally in the middle of no where, it is surrounded my trees and nature something Summer has never really been around before and for some reason it comforts her and she feels a connection. The first people she meets at her new school and brothers, well twins to be precise. Hot twins. Decker is the person to catch my eye the most, and of course he is the story's bad boy, what can I say a naughty man is right up my street I love them.
The school itself seems a little different, and Summer soon finds out that finally there is a place full of people just like her a group of magic users who can manipulate the elements and use certain spells. Summer finds out she has an affinity for not only one element but two, it is no wonder that she felt so at home with the forest as she gets her powers from earth and wind.
Summer also learns more about the mysterious Decker who happens to be a Dark student while his brother is a Light user. They both also happen to be next in line to take over the roles of 'Master of the night and fire' and 'Master of the light' there job will be to make sure the laws of the light and dark are not to be broken. At first i was a little confused by the magic system and it took me a few chapters to get the hang of it but once I did it was more than worth it as I liked her unique take on magic, it wasn't a story line that has been recycled it was original.
Summer is a very naive girl, and sometimes yes this can border on annoying but those moments are few are far between. There are a lot of good characters in this book and defiantly a few surprises along the way that make it an excellent read to sink your teeth into and make you never want to leave.
This book was such a pleasant surprise and I did not want to put it down, it was so good I straight away had to purchase about 5 more of her books (They are all such a good price!).
Yes the ending does have a HUGE cliffhanger, but the good thing for us is the next book is already out, YAY. I do recommend getting the in between novella as it explains a lot and will let you go into the second book with added knowledge.
A well deserved 5/5 stars.

I haven't read about witches in a while and what a treat you've got waiting for you here. This book took me to the edge of the forest and back. You'll understand what i mean by that once you've read it. :) I was captivated with it from the very beginning. I don't know about you but, I love when a book grabs your attention from the start and you want to read more and more. You become invested in the characters and through the words you read you are right there with them doing and feeling everything. This is what Lizzy Ford did here.
What grabbed my attention was a set of twins that came to welcome Summer to the new school. You heard me right twins. They might look alike but they are oh so different. Of course you've always got a good and bad twin but oh, Decker is truly the bad boy in this case. He is the Dark twin the rebel if you will. Dark and mysterious. Everything about him is just so sexy. That is why openly the girls want the good twin but secretly dream about being with Decker. On his 18th birthday he is going to inherit all of the Dark souls to become the Master of Night and Fire and His brother the Master of Light. Their blood line is special and their family was gifted with the powers of dark and light to keep the balance in order.
Summer has no idea what she's into here. After her parents died in a car crash, at the age of 6, she was sent to an orphanage. Now at the age of 16 she's been to more schools than she can count. Summer has magic and this magic has caused her trouble at all of the schools shes ever been to. She even blew one up once. She has no doubt that this new school is going to be the same as all of the others. They are going to get tired of her craziness and send her back to the orphanage. Just when everything seems to be going well for Summer, She's made a new friend, she's starting to fit in with her classmates, she evern grabbed herself a hot boyfriend, but her world starts to crumble when little by little things start to go wrong.
I'm not going into more detail and spoil the surprise but lets just say that Decker and Summer have a relationship like no other. They are light and dark and together they are the perfect balance. The book leaves us with a huge cliffhanger that left me breathless and turning my pages for more, not believing that's how it ended.
Darn you Lizzy Ford. * screams all dramatic like with my fist in the air*. I hope the next book comes out very very quickly because i am on pins and needles here. :)

Alright, so I'm not going to rehash the description/summary, but I will mention:
There's a difference between being innocent, and being stupid right? Unfortunately, with Summer, the distinction wasn't clear. I was beyond frustrated at her embarrassing naivety, as she was constantly picked on, and made fun of by Dawn (Mean girl), and her followers. It was just embarrassing. I wanted to crawl under my blanket and hide or something, every time Summer did something "stupid" b/c apparently she's shy and innocent??! *face palm*
However, I could see why Summer lacked confidence. If I was an orphan, being tossed around from school to school, with no money (relying only on state compensation), having no friends or family, I'm sure I wouldn't be the most confident girl around. Still, I was overwhelmed with the constant reminder of her being an orphan. I got it the first time. There's no need to constantly remind the reader that she's an orphan. Not only does Summer mention it every other chance she gets, the people around her act like it's so strange, and it's just... awkward? And the constant reminders of how big her breasts were... Um, yeah, no. Didn't really work for me. Neither did the whole "I'M SO FAT" rhetoric, with her being a size 4 and all. *rolls eyes*
Also, the romance felt a bit rushed. What happened during the first week Summer spent with Decker?! Show me, don't tell me! I wanted to see more of the push-n-pull between Summer and Decker, before they became an official couple.
So, despite my very minor complaints mentioned above, I enjoyed reading Dark Summer. The plot was intriguing, packed full of mystery, suspense, surprise, rivalry, and romance. I also really liked Dawn, even though she was a total Mean Girl, and a bully. I hope to see more of her in the sequel. Also, I'm hoping to see Summer embrace her dark side. I wanna see more development with her character: growth, maturity, depth, and a backbone. I have my fingers crossed. I loved the the whole Light v. Dark magic concept, and with so many unanswered questions, I'm hoping the sequel will deliver. ;-)
Lastly, can't end it without a "yay" for our dark and brooding Decker. Swoon.

I was so captivated by this book, I went online to see when the next one is coming out. End of 2012...yay for me, because the end is almost here (hope the Author get that's hint) Anyhoo, while I was online I was excited to read how everyone else loved this book too. Maybe even see if they had predictions on the next book. I was completely baffled that a "couple" were actually taking away stars because the book ended in a serious cliffhanger. So you know my first thoughts! HA YOU GUYS LOVED IT TOO!!!!! Here's why! -1 star for cliffhanger + angry = soul sucking captivating book. Have no fear people, because I will be the first to drive over and start throwing eggs at Author's house, when they write these AMAZING books and leave me hanging....ask Stacey Rourke & Lisa Morgan, if you do not believe me. So I say throw eggs, not take away stars over cliffhangers.

Jodie will love that. Seriously, if you love to be pulled in and sucked dry by a captivating story. One that plays with your heart strings and at the same time making you feel so angry you think your going to turn purple. Right up till the very end, where you feel like the Author knock the breath out of you. Read this book. This story will compel you so much, one minute you will be in the woods and the next step you will be following rose pedals to the bedroom, doing the sookie sookie dance!

It all started after the orphanage paid her trip to Idaho. The day the bus left her in the parking lot at her new school. Summer was sent to a new school in Idaho, a school for children with special gifts that keep them from integrating into normal schools. A school for unique children. The first day she met Beck. He was 17, brown hair and the most clear teal eyes she ever seen on anybody and he was the future Master of the Light. But he had a brother, a twin Decker. He has dark eyes as the clothes he wears, and isn't nice like Beck, he is the ultimate bad boy from school, the guy who tells the truth to your face, not thinking about the consequences and he will be the next Master of Fire and Night. But there is something good in him, every time he is near Summer he feels connected to her and he calms down.
That day, Summer found out the hole place is different liker, and maybe now she wont have to move again. She hopped this time she wont feel like a freak, maybe this time she wont cause any problems, like the fires from the other two schools, she considered her magic gift a curse. The gift made her shy, a girl that keeps all the stuff for her, with no friends, she is afraid she could hurt somebody.
The love between Summer and Decker it’s amazing, they are the perfect couple, the connect, he can help her find her power and Summer can help him with his dark power. She can reset the balance between Light and Dark. This two are soul mates!

I always enjoy Lizzy’s stories, and this one was no different than the others. Within just a few pages I was pulled into this magical world and it held me tight right to the end.
Dark Summer pulled on my every emotion. You know it’s an awesome book when you find yourself muttering at the characters as if they can actually hear you. I did A LOT of muttering throughout this book. There were times I wanted to strangle the characters and times where I wanted to reach through the page and hug them. I cried, I laughed, I grinned, I yelled, and I cried some more. This book was an emotional rollercoaster from the first page until the last.
The cast of characters was wonderful. I loved Summer and adored Decker. They were such a great pair. For awhile I was worried that there would be a love triangle with Decker’s twin, Beck, and I’m super glad there wasn’t. I liked Beck, but he was no Decker.
As always, Lizzy’s writing was great. She gives just enough description for the reader to get lost in the world. She shows her readers not only the scenery but also the emotion. As a reader, I couldn’t help but feel every little thing that happened to my favorite characters.
My final thoughts … awesome book, great story line, fantastic characters, but it was an emotional ride that left me exhausted. Would I recommend Dark Summer? Yes, it’s a great read, but I warn you, it is emotionally draining.

I'm a big fan of Lizzy Ford, but this was not her best work. The overall concept if good - an imbalance of the Light/Dark magic (and of course our protagonist is the one to fix it). NOTE: It does end on a cliffhanger.
However, there was too much random crap happening that had no effect on the plot. There's a scene where Decker and Summer go out on a lake and show off their magic, which is all well and good, but I don't need 10 pages where NOTHING RELEVANT TO THE PLOT HAPPENS. I appreciate being shown the development of their relationship. I don't appreciate being shown the same thing 15 times for like half the book. I get it already, can we please just move on?
Also, I don't think structure of the magic is fully thought out yet. The rules are explained once and then we're left to remember them - BUT OMG THEY"RE VITALLY IMPORTANT AND YOU BROKE ONE.

What an amazing and captivating story! This is one of those stories you pick up to read and are not sure what you will find when you first turn the pages. As the story unfolds, you are pulled deeper and deeper into the lives of magical students living in a secluded private school setting in the middle of the woods.
Orphaned as a young child, Summer, the main character, is sent from an LA orphanage to a secluded private school in the Rocky Mountains because she just doesn't fit in anywhere else! She arrives as a damaged soul and soon finds new meaning to her life as she discovers she is full of magic! This story really has it all a great group of characters, a new fresh story line, friendship, betrayal, blossoming love and a few Yetis too! It was so heart wrenching at times I found myself on the brink of tears.. not often does an Author move me in a story like that. I had to finish it in one sitting just so I knew what happened... of course a heck of a twist at the end followed by a humdinger of a "cliff" hanger! I am so looking forward to reading more from this author! Well deserving of the 5* and I highly recommend this book!

It was so heart wrenching at times I found myself on the brink of tears.. not often does an Author move me in a story like that. I had to finish it in one sitting just so I knew what happened... of course a heck of a twist at the end followed by a humdinger of a "cliff" hanger! I am so looking forward to reading more from this author! Well deserving of the 5* and I highly recommend this book!

What a ride! This tale of light and dark witchlings was amazing! It follows Summer, an orphan who has been shipped all over the place because bad things happen around her that she can’t control. Now shipped to a witchling school, could it be the place for her to finally call home? And what of the dark broody boy named Decker, who enchants her heart in every way?
I loved the characters! They feel individually unique, act authentic and take you along with them as they go from day to day at the school. The twins Decker and Beck are opposites as brothers can get, but I found myself rooting for them both as they battle Dark and Light forces. Summer was definitely one of my favorite characters, she’s had a tough life yet seems very naïve and gentle. I kept hoping the inevitable bad luck would not find her again and finally leave her be. But that was the intrigue of the story, it definitely kept you on your toes.
If you want a paranormal fantasy with something different, this is it. Packed full of magic, twists, romance and characters you’ll love to love and hate, it’s definitely on my best of 2013 reads.

Loved it!
Lizzy Ford drew me in from the first page and the story stayed with me long after the last page. I really enjoyed watching her weave magic into our modern day world. Her descriptions really brought the forest and the camp to life. I loved seeing the characters, especially Sam through her eyes.
I also enjoyed her characters immensely. I have to say I got really attached to them. I so wanted to see Decker and Summer work out. Biji was hysterical and sweet. There were times I just wanted to reach into the story and smack Dawn for doing anything to them, that’s how caught up I got with them.
I read the story knowing that it was a series, but I still didn’t expect the ending. I wanted to cry and scream at the same time. The only thing that kept me from doing either was the fact that Ford had woven her story so well so far and I really wanted to see where she was going. Unfortunately for me Autumn Storm, the second book in the series, won’t be out until the summer. *SIGH*
