r/COVID19_Pandemic
The COVID19/SARS pandemic is ongoing. Its effects on human health are at the scale of a world war. SARS-2 causes great morbidity & mortality including organ & immune system damage, & disability. The consequences of serial mass-infection are mounting. Vaccines alone won't end the pandemic. Viral evolution threatens to worsen it. Health systems are crumbling. Public health policy is politics—Mass-infection, mass-disability & mass-death are political choices. The airborne virus must be eliminated.

Damn. Well that stinks. I love me some Dario but his salary is way too large to be sitting on the bench, but damn I was really hoping that they had resolved this issue since the offseason. At least he’s been professional about it, even playing in games, but has probably been wanting out for a while now. Honestly just makes me a bit sad, I’ll be sad to see him go
If he’s “not allowed at the practice facility” he probably wasn’t being very professional anymore. Who knows, but following in the steps of Ivacic is not a great look imo.
Regardless, not a huge loss. Seems like Phil rates him as our fourth best CB and I agree with him even if most of this sub doesn’t. He’s also undersized and over 30 so I really doubt there’s much interest in him.
Zuparic is completely average in MLS, and anyone that shares Ivacic’s attitude (and agent) after being provided enormous opportunities by the team can get lost. Good riddance.
Quietly, all our center backs have looked pretty average to bellow mls average.
I think the management should have managed to move him on, like other players where it does not seem like there is a plan for them or the players concerns. They have done pretty badly at that.
We definitely need another starting CB to pair with Kamal Miller and move on Zuparic and Mabiala. Don’t think it could’ve been done sooner because we needed to see how KM meshed with the team first.
Quotes on the tweet say he was at the facility yesterday so… grain of salt and all. Hoping it’s not true cause i like Zup. But if Araujo and Zac are over him in the lineup it makes sense he wants out.
I recognize I don’t know what I’m talking about, but I never understood why he lost his starting spot. Eight games into the season, I still think he’s the best center back we’ve got.
Neville is all in on Kamal Miller at left center back, which is where Zuparic most naturally fits in. I’d entertain arguments that McGraw or Araujo are somehow tactically better on the right but I haven’t seen enough evidence of that so far. I think it must come down to attitude and future planning. Zuparic has reportedly wanted out for a while and if that means we need to move forward with another CB, they should start getting minutes to ease their transition.
Maybe this is who we’ll waive in the summer if we get that extra allowance that’s been reported.
I think a large part of Neville’s position on K. Miller is that he believes Miller’s distribution is top flight, something I haven’t seen much of this season with our CDMs mostly passing straight back to the back line. Seems like we rarely advance up the center of the pitch
Statistically he is elite. He's like 90th percentile among CBs in passes > 30 yards attempted and completion percentage. He's very noticeably good at breaking the first line of a press.
We spent a lot of money on Kamal Miller and Crepeau, and so far, only San Jose has given up more goals than us. Very hard to say anyone on the back line has been a net positive for this team so far. Teams pretty much score at will against us.
IIRC, Zuparic asked for a trade while Gio was still the coach. I have to assume the Timbers had hoped to change his mind after they fired Gio and that he’d work things out with Phil. I guess that hasn’t happened.
On the one hand, I understand wanting to move on from a guy over 30 who makes north of $900K who doesn’t really want to be here.
On the other hand, if I’m Zuparic, I’d think Phil’s team has been a disaster on defense, I’m a starting level CB, and these fools don’t know what they are doing.
The reality is probably that Zuparic is overpaid in MLS and that Portland can’t find a trade partner. If I were Portland, I wouldn’t want to waive or amnesty Zup until I knew I could make use of that money again. Paying a good CB not to play on your team, just because he says he’s unhappy, probably isn’t a good use of money, unless his behavior is so bad you have to cut him.
Zup asked for a trade at the end of the season. Gio was already long gone.
I believe he requested to be traded near the end of last season. The Timbers signed Miller I assume partially because of this and they have younger/cheaper options at the posibiton that deserve consideration. That puts Zuparic as the odd man out but I believe he was part of the cause. Why he hasn't been transfered is something I have no clue about. I think the Timbers want to move on
I think the office side of the team is very bad at that, we have several players that do not look to be in their plans but are here, understandable that it’s an issue.
I’d rate Kamal Miller above him easily- dude is the starting CB on the Canada NT.
The difference between McGraw, Araujo, and Zup is pretty negligible imo, but I’d rather start the younger guy who wants to be in Portland than the dude over 30 who is whining to the MLSPA that we won’t trade him.
Upvoting because you don’t know what you’re talking about.
It’s likely that the level of placating or finding out what things are like at this new era does not seem great to Zup, wish him the best and let him go Timbers.
This is horseshit. The source is Zuparic's agent. Same agent who used to represent Santi and Ivacic. Take this report with a grain of salt.
If so that's a BIG red flag... Is that confirmed, Jeremy?
I’m turning 33 next month and these commends are hitting different nowadays lol
Tweet has been deleted now fwiw
Hope the FO just starts passing on bringing in any player who is represented by this agent. Sounds like every player under his advisement gets bad advice.
Absolutely atrocious agent for sure. Seems only interested in moving players.
Would love to keep Zuparic off the bench for the rest of the season AS PER HIS CONTRACT but also the desire to cleanse the team of his agent is high.
Major bummer. I’m not really well versed in defensive players but he is one that has consistently stuck with me enough to put him on the back of one of my jerseys. From my untrained eye I think he is a solid defender. He’s positionally in the correct places and his passing is consistently accurate. Sucks that he’s trying to find a way out.
made mcgraw look a lot better than he is imo
McGraw isn't a bad player. Neville is asking very different things from the backline than was the case under Gio. What we've seen from McGraw this season is growing pains of learning a system and style that he isn't used to.
I don't think he is bad, but not good enough for a team that wants to contend for anything. Regardless of system, he is too slow to react to attackers movement and doesn't support defenders around him very much, and he is not great on the ball.
bummed. was stoked on his play ever since the covid cup.
good luck zup.
Gonna miss him but he's 31 and time to move on. Would not be surprised if there are some others who are on the way out.
And so continues the balkanization of the Portland Timbers /s
Ffs why does this keep happening to our team. Either the FO is incompetent or that agent really fuckin sucks
¿Por que no los dos?
AHHH MAKE IT STOOOP
So, feels like the football direction is below average for mls.
