Product description
Amazon.ca
A delightfully buoyant, mock-creepy collection of film scores from Hollywood's first and best call for quirk, strangeness, and charm. Focusing on Elfman's post-1992 work (much of it for director Tim Burton), this 2 CD set features excerpts from Edward Scissorhands, To Die For, and Batman Returns, among other lesser items. -- Jeff Bateman

This Album Came Out 6 Years Ago, And Volume One came out 12 years ago. So with that Said Where is Volume Three? For All of you who Say the Sommersby music is bad, your sadly mistaken. It is the Most Wonderful Music ever composed by Danny Elfman ever. After Hearing this Music Over and Over, I had to buy the Soundtrack, but What's weird is I didn't like the soundtrack as much. For some reason the music sounded better on this Album. Yes I even think it's better music than Edward Scissorhands, call me crazy, but it is. Anyways with that said I'll get back to the Album. As Always the Tim Burton Movie themes are always the Best, with Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns, & the Nightmare Before Christmas being among them. Dolores Claiborne is Haunting. To Die For is fun and I love the Guitar bits by Danny himself. Black Beauty is number 3 in 'the Dramatic & Beautiful Film Scores from Danny Elfman Catagory' right after 'Sommersby' & 'Edward Scissorhands'. Mission Impossible is way better than Hans Zimmer score for Mission Impossible 2. It's Just More Exciting and Adventurous. Dead Presidents is Aight. Freeway is Bearable, but not the greatest. Shruken Heads is funny as hell. The Television Odds 'n Ends are always fun too. The Amazing Stories Music from the episodes 'Family Dog' and 'Mummy, Daddy' are playfull and fun. The Nike Commercial is Unexpectedly clever. The Flash theme ranks right up there with 'Batman' and 'Superman' for all time great superhero themes, although it did sound a lot like the 'Dick Tracy' theme. Try Humming both Separatly you'll see what I mean. The Pee-Wee's Playhouse music is wonderfully weird and if you're a big fan of the 'Face Like A Frog' music on the first album than you'll Digg it the most baby. Beetlejuice is a wonderful rendition of the Beetlejuice Movie theme. And the biggest treat is the 'This Is Halloween' Demo all parts sung By Danny Elfman witch truly shows this mans wonderful talent for film composing and song writing. With all said and done where oh where is Volume Three Mister Elfman.

Danny Elfman's "Music for a Darkened Theater" is a brilliantly crafted masterpiece of music. His compositions hold a certain eerie theme, which makes them captivating. His music, ranging from Black Beauty to Edward Scissorhands, projects both fear and beauty, happiness and deceit. "Music for a Darknened Theater" was definitely worth the price I paid for it. Anyone interested in instrumental/soundtrack music will love the phenomenal creations of Danny Elfman.

Although i would have to say that i found the original "Music for a Darkened Theatre" a better listen, this one still has it's definite high-points. First of all, if you don't own Elfman's masterpiece "Edward Scissorhands", this has enough on it to entice you to purchase it, and i was as far from sorry for buying it as they come. also, it has samples from Elfman's new styles of music (i.e. Dolores Claiborne, Black Beauty, etc..), which in some cases is disappointing, but when he can use his own style of dramatic music it can surpass some of James Horner's finest moments. The second CD is basically 7 or 8 really original and fun tracks with some stuff that's just not worth listening to in between (i particularly enjoyed "shrunken heads", "The Flash", and the all-elfman "this is halloween" at the end). overall, a great listening experience when you can filter out the disappointing tracks.

Of course, any Danny Elfman fan would enjoy this collection and I must admit that I listened to it many times over. Unfortunately, the tracks are not named, and all the listener gets is the number of tracks clustered together from a movie and the name of the movie they were from. I personally enjoyed the little blurbs of background onformation about each track that were in vol. 1, and I wish that this cd had been designed in a similar fashion. Otherwise, the music is awesome.

It should be easy to tell from the movies and TV shows listed whether or not you'd be interested in this collection. I'm a fan of Elfman's (in the soundtrack sense) so I liked this but there was so much music and the range is so broad that I didn't love it. this is one of those CDs that I had to make my own compilation from so I could listen to just the parts I liked without skipping around too much.

This 2 cd set is a fabulous purchase, especially if you have eclectic taste in music. From Dolores Claiborne to Mission: Impossible to Dead Presidents, this set has it all. Some of the most lovely and disturbing music I've ever heard. Even if you have all of Danny's soundtracks, there is still some stuff on here that you can't find anywhere else. Plus, the demo of "This is Halloween" is not to be missed.

Definitely better than volume one ... Edward Scissorhands is my favorite movie mostly because of the score, so imagine how happy I was when the first few tracks were from that movie! I LOVE the demo version of "This Is Halloween", it shows how extremely talented Elfman is to be able to put every single part on that song together completely by himself! He is the most amazing modern composer ever, and I love his work! I definitely recommend this album, worth the $20 something bucks!

great collection

I bought this and volume one. I couldn't decide which one to order but I was pleased with both. I started looking at the cds in the first place because I really wanted some music from Edward Scissorhands. I wasn't sure if I wanted a whole soundtrack so I bought these instead and I love them. It is a very good collection, and like some others have said I would like to get a 3rd volume with some newer stuff on it.

I got his CD because I love Danny Elfman's music and I can usually pick it out anywhere. Most people know him from Tim Burton's movies but he has done some other work as well. I really enjoy this CD and like to listen to while working or trying to get into a artistic mood.

Danny Elfman has been part of rewriting how music should work with film and this is a great way to hear it for one's self. The stuff from Edward and Batman Returns make this worth owning in and of it's self. This is a pretty good place to start with his post Oingo Boingo career.
