Top 10 Lakeith Stanfield Movies and TV Shows

LaKeith Stanfield‘s varied career in cinema and television shows that he has been one of Hollywood’s most charming up-and-coming stars since the 2010s. The Oscar candidate has demonstrated his abilities in critically praised independent hits like Black Messiah and Judas, as well as big-budget studio productions like Term 12.

The California native has acted in a variety of television shows, including the Netflix original animation Yasuke and Donald Glover’s hip-hop-themed satire Atlanta. Since he started acting in 2008, Stanfield has done roles that are both incredibly funny and ethically dubious, demonstrating his extreme versatility.

Lakeith Stanfield Movies and TV Shows

Stanfield occasionally dabbles in music, much like his Atlanta co-star Donald Glover, as seen by his rap verse on Sorry to Bother You’s “OYAHYTT” and his own 2020 track “Fast Life” (performed as an artist under the alias HTIEKAL). As an actor, Stanfield has also been on screen alongside well-known luminaries like Daniel Craig in Knives Out and Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems.

He made fleeting appearances in both films, therefore ranking them among his best performances to date seems pointless given that he has established himself as a more noteworthy lead and supporting actor in other parts of his extensive résumé.

10.Yasuke (2021 )

Yasuke, an African-American man who rose to prominence in feudal Japan, is the subject of this Netflix anime, which is a highly romanticized portrayal of the first foreign samurai. The story explores the years of service that the titular hero endured and his transition into a lone warrior. LaKeith Stanfield plays Yasuke. The animation is made even more visually stunning by the addition of some fantasy elements.

Even while some viewers may find the pacing tedious, Yasuke shows that Stanfield is willing to try out new approaches. Yasuke also offered him his chance at redemption, given that his interpretation of the well-liked anime character L didn’t quite work in the live-action Death Note film.

9. The Changeling (2023-)

The Changeling is an Apple TV+ horror fantasy that reimagines New York as a bizarre fairytale world full of mystical barriers. LaKeith Stanfield plays Apollo Kagwa, a worried husband and father who has to find his wife and child when they mysteriously disappear, in the film adaptation of the same-titled novel.

The Changeling is a great modern-day Odyssey set amid the tumult of New York City, and many critics have called it a fairytale for adults. Although some viewers may find the show a little too large-scale, everyone agrees that Stanfield is at the top of his game and perfectly captures the anxieties and fears of the perfect family man.

8. The Photograph (2020)

LaKeith Stanfield and Issa Rae had a remarkable on-screen connection in The Photograph, one of his most underappreciated roles. Starring as a photojournalist, Stanfield aims to learn more about the mysterious past of a woman who perished in a disaster. He meets her daughter, a curator in New York, while pursuing her identity. This new relationship is put to the test as they progressively fall in love by a broken past and geographic distance (after one of them moves to London). The Photograph approaches current relationships and their long-term viability more reflectively than it does romanticizing any ideas of contemporary love.

7. The Harder they fall (2021)

The actors of The Harder They Fall drew inspiration from numerous real-life criminals, including Stagecoach Mary and Nat Love. LaKeith Stanfield’s persona was influenced by gunslinger and outlaw Cherokee Bill. The action-packed Netflix original gives a new perspective on the Western genre, and its characters are emotionally compelling.

The Harder They Fall is a revisionist Western that explores the internal tension that many black cowboys and outlaws in the Wild West experience, given that the genre is typically dominated by white groups. Stanfield, for his part, coexists peacefully on screen with well-known industry stalwarts such as Regina King and Idris Elba.

6. Crown Heights (2017)

LaKeith Stanfield never backs down from portraying real-life characters, from rapper Snoop Dogg in Straight Outta Compton to civil rights activist Jimmie Lee Jackson in Selma. He first demonstrated his talent as a biopic protagonist in Crown Heights, where he played Colin Warner, a man falsely imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit.

Crown Heights chronicles his incarceration as well as his best friend Carl King’s (Nnamdi Asomugha, nominated for an Independent Spirit Award) unwavering efforts to prove his innocence. Crown Heights is exceptional because of Stanfield and Asomugha’s performances and the film’s ultimately upbeat message, even though it does contain some clichéd biographical aspects.

5. Get Out (2017)

Get Out, the startling directorial debut of Jordan Peele, begins with LaKeith Stanfield’s character, Andre Hayworth, being abducted and falling into a group of cinematic characters who met a fate worse than death. Stanfield makes the most of his role as Andre despite having little on screen time, and the sequence where he yells, “Get Out,” is particularly chilling.

A pivotal moment in horror and dark comedy, Get Out centers on the foolish visit of a black photographer to his white in-laws. Daniel Kaluuyah, Catherine Keener, and other actors give strong performances. However, Stanfield stood out from the group thanks to his succinct but powerful performance.

4. Short Term 12 (2013)

Short Term 12, which was directed by Daniel Cretton before he became famous, is famous for having a number of stars before they became well-known. This has Rami Malek, Kaitlyn Dever, Brie Larson, and of course, LaKeith Stanfield in the key roles. The film explores the inner workings of a juvenile detention facility for at-risk youth.

With its protagonists coming to terms with their past mistreatment, Short Term 12 is a touching film that veers between sentimental and feel-good themes. As the polite Marcus, Stanfield gives one of his first standout performances. Stanfield delivers some of the most moving lines in the film, speaks directly to Marcus’ mental instability, and even breaks into an acapella rap verse.

3. Sorry To Bother You (2018)

Shoes Riley’s overtly ambitious anti-capitalist comedy was the ideal vehicle for LaKeith Stanfield to become a star. Sorry To Bother You, which plays a black salesperson who learns a white accent to be successful at work, addresses a lot more topics with a lighthearted tone than only professional racial relations.

The status of modern art as seen through Tessa Thompson’s artist heroine, unapproved experiments by white businesses, and even modern rap—with a specific scene highlighting how white people can appropriate African-American slang—are all mentioned. The surrealist classic Sorry To Bother You is further cemented by its horse people twist, which serves as the icing on top.

2. The Black Messiah And Judas (2021)

In the 1960s, Fred Hampton’s magnetic energy propelled the Black Panther Party to the pinnacle of the civil rights movement, making him a formidable force. And then, with assistance from their insider William O’Neal, a plot supported by the CIA brought him down.

Director Shaka Zulu created a gripping thriller, eschewing biopic clichés, to retell the tragically dramatic story of a man who was compelled to rebel against his own people. Daniel Kaluuya as Hampton and LaKeith Stanfield as O’Neal both delivered career-best performances in Judas and the Black Messiah. Stanfield was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the first time, while Kaluuya won.

1. Atlanta (2016 to 2022)

Atlanta is a multifaceted city. The narrative centers on the ascent of rapper Paper Boi and his manager cousin Earl, both of whom are expertly portrayed by creator Donald Glover and actor Brian Tyree Henry. However, the program occasionally veers into surrealist territory by including stand-alone episodes that parody the music business, contemporary racial relations, and the inner workings of the entertainment complex.

Atlanta’s four seasons have made it a legendary show in contemporary television, and it is without a doubt one of LaKeith Stanfield’s best works. A standout is his character Darius, who is both incredibly sad and ridiculously funny.

Atlanta is made even more interesting by the best Darius moments and comments, which range from his impromptu question to a man asking if he can measure the tree in his yard to his sales presentation about replacing rodents with cellphones to his obsession with a still-alive Tupac.

However, Stanfield transforms Darius from the stereotypical stoner to something more, a feel-good slacker who isn’t hesitant to show his inner vulnerability and naivete in some surprisingly moving moments, as is the case with his many other performances. Fan favorites include “White Fashion,” a critique on the whitewashing of ethnic cultures, and the slow-burning horror “Teddy Perkins” are two examples of how this is especially clear.
