Daniel Deronda is a novel by George Eliot, first published in 1876. It was the last novel she completed and the only one set in the contemporary Victorian society of her day. The work's mixture of social satire and moral searching, along with its sympathetic rendering of Jewish proto-Zionist and Kabbalistic ideas, has made it the controversial final statement of one of the most renowned of Victorian novelists. Daniel Deronda contains two main strains of plot, united by the title character. The novel begins in late August 1865[1] with the meeting of Daniel Deronda and Gwendolen Harleth in the fictional town of Leubronn, Germany. Daniel finds himself attracted to, but wary of, the beautiful, stubborn, and selfish Gwendolen, whom he sees losing all her winnings in a game of roulette. The next day, Gwendolen receives a letter from her mother telling her that the family is financially ruined and asking her to come home. In despair at losing all her money, Gwendolen pawns a necklace and debates gambling again to make her fortune. In a fateful moment, however, her necklace is returned to her by a porter, and she realises that Daniel saw her pawn the necklace and redeemed it for her. From this point, the plot breaks off into two separate flashbacks, one which gives us the history of Gwendolen Harleth and one of Daniel Deronda.

Mary Ann Evans (22 November 1819 - 22 December 1880; alternatively "Mary Anne" or "Marian"), known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist, poet, journalist, translator and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. She is the author of seven novels, including Adam Bede (1859), The Mill on the Floss (1860), Silas Marner (1861), Felix Holt, the Radical (1866), Middlemarch (1871-72), and Daniel Deronda (1876), most of them set in provincial England and known for their realism and psychological insight.

She used a male pen name, she said, to ensure her works would be taken seriously. Female authors were published under their own names during Eliot's life, but she wanted to escape the stereotype of women only writing lighthearted romances. She also wished to have her fiction judged separately from her already extensive and widely known work as an editor and critic. An additional factor in her use of a pen name may have been a desire to shield her private life from public scrutiny and to prevent scandals attending her relationship with the married George Henry Lewes, with whom she lived for over 20 years.

Her 1872 work Middlemarch has been described by Martin Amis and Julian Barnes as the greatest novel in the English language.

Eliot's Daniel Deronda is immensely quotable with such lines as, "I think I dislike what I don't like more than I like what I like." And, "Ignorance gives one a large range of probabilities." And, "I shall never love anybody. I can't love people. I hate them." The aristocracy are great in Eliot's hand.

I would give two stars, but giving George Eliot credit for having given us real classics. This one is truly disappointing. The wordiest book I believe I've ever read. Maybe two paragraphs of a rather sluggish narrative per five pages of excess verbiage. I wonder if Ms. Eliot was paid by the word.

There is absolutely no reason why you should purchase this digireads.com edition. It contains so many spelling mistakes I could not read past the first 100 pages. This book is an insult to the author and the reader. Stay away from it.

Although Daniel Deronda is mentioned on the first page he does not appear again until well into the book and one starts to wonder where the book is going. Gwendolen is a very self centred person who excites little sympathy, even after her husband's death. The narrative then goes to Daniel Deronda and the two tales appear not to have much connection, until towards the end when the question arises as to which woman he will choose.

The Jewish aspect is interesting especially with the knowledge of what happened with the creation of Israel in the future, but there are long passages of philosophy which are best skipped over.

Suffered a lot by having American spelling and quite a lot of typo's.

This book is quite remarkable. Themes run throughout concerning the plight of women of the age, the plight of the illegitimate, the challenge of racism, and the ability of an individual to master emotion. There are insights into many varied characters, coming from one who must be a strong and opinionated author. There are many spiritual comments regarding especially the two main characters, Daniel and Gwendolen, which are interesting studies on how a person can learn to live with their lot in life.

This is not to say that the book is an intellectual work alone; it is a great read. It is not an easy read, as the sentence structures can be complex, and the quotations many and varied. It is, however, well worth the effort! I would have marked it higher than a 3 star were it not for the concentration required at times in reading. This is no criticism, just a comment, as for me, reading is as much about relaxation as it is about education and experience.
