What’s the Best Three Song Run on a St. Vincent Album?
I realized today that the three songs that have been released from All Born Screaming are all in sequential order on the album. It got me thinking, what is the best three song run on a St. Vincent Album?
Three candidates stand out to me:
Surgeon-> Northern Lights-> Strange Mercy
Huey Newton -> Digital Witness-> I Prefer Your Love
And almost just as good
Digital Witness-> I Prefer Your Love-> Regret
Love to hear your thoughts. Super excited for this album to drop
Hands down Black Rainbow - Laughing With a Mouth of Blood - Marrow
Listening to Actor right now, definitely the best on the album. Probably an oversight by me on missing this in the OP. Black Rainbow always slaps harder than I expect it to (and Marrow has a special place in my heart)
Came here to say this exact thing, you are officially my person
100% yes. Though I do really like the vinyl order of Black Rainbow, The Sequel, Laughing, Marrow. It's almost a more sinister buildup.
Waitttt you're so right
Surgeon-> Northern Lights-> Strange Mercy is what I was going to go with
Totally. Which is incredible given the trio just prior (Chloe, Cruel, Cheerleader)
Best album by far.
Chloe, Cruel, Cheerleader
Surgeon, N Lights, S Mercy definitely
Very strong contender
Also my pick. Unless it’s too soon to say Broken Man -> Flea -> Big Time Nothing
Yeah, I didn't realize all three singles were grouped together on the album itself until I sat down to listen to it earlier tonight. Extremely strong lineup.
Prince Johnny > Huey Newton > Digital Witness
This absolutely. That album is what got me into STV and by the end of Digital Witness I knew this is a special artist. What a run of songs. What an album.
Hang on Me, Pills, Masseduction
NY, FTF, Young Lover
Hang on me is so good
Save Me from What I Want, The Neighbors, Actor Out of Work
Laughing with a Mouth of Blood, Marrow, The Bed
(or The Bed, The Party, Just the Same but Brand New probably)
doesnt rlly count as a song but i always found the Dancing with a Ghost/Slow Disco/Smoking Section trifecta to be the perfect and most beautiful way to end a record
It is SO good. For an album that's not among my favorite, I do think it's her strongest closing. It really hit me on that tour with how dark and intense and sad it is.
Personally, by album I'd go:
Marry Me - Paris Is Burning - All My Stars Aligned
The Neighbours - Actor Out Of Work - Black Rainbow (this one is awkward because I don't care too much for The Bed but it comes at what is otherwise the best part of the album for me)
Cruel - Cheerleader - Surgeon
I Prefer Your Love - Regret - Bring Me Your Loves
Sugarboy - Los Ageless - Happy Birthday, Johnny
Down - Somebody Likes Me - My Baby Wants A Baby (ignoring the interludes)
Of these, I'd say the Strange Mercy run is the strongest, being carried by Cruel and Surgeon
I love the interludes. They give this run a sorta cosmic, ghostly, almost nostalgic feeling.
They bring an intimacy to Daddy's Home, especially knowing the inspiration was her mother.
This is the correct answer. Flawless.
say what you will but i say its somebody like me -> my baby wants a baby -> …at the holiday party
This is such a good call. Love all of these songs - probably my favourites off of Daddy’s Home
seconded. Not my favorite album but this arrangement works so well tonally and also lyrically
It’s not my favorite three track run, but this is undeniably great. I may have issues with the album on a whole but this trifecta will always be great. Daddy’s Home haters like to pretend this doesn’t exist lol
Everyone sleeping on Paris is Burning - All My Stars Aligned - The Apocalypse Song but Annie has a bunch of goated runs on the albums
surgeon ➡️ northern lights ➡️ strange mercy might remain undefeated forever
Masseduction - Sugarboy - Los Ageless
Daddy's Hoome: Somebody Like Me - My Baby Wants a Baby - ...At the Holiday Party
Oh, good question.
Actor: The Strangers - Save Me from what I want - The Neighbors
Strange Mercy; Chloe in the Afternoon - Cruel - Cheerleader
SV: Rattlesnake - Birth in Reverse - Prince Johnny
Digital Witness - I Prefer Your Love - Regret is pretty strong too
Masseduction is a personal favorite so I have multiple combos there, but I guess I'd go: Masseduction - Sugarboy - Los Ageless
The fact that there are so many contenders for this make me realize what an excellent and consistent catalogue St Vincent has
Regret > Bring Me Your Loves > Psychopath
Marry Me, Paris is burning, All my stars aligned.
OR
The Bed, The Party and Just the same but brand new.
Been playing through entire discog in advance of ABS tonight, so this is pretty fresh in mind (also going by sheet where I'm rating/ranking every StV song)
Oddly, S/T doesn't really have any truly great trios that standout in Discog; if pressed I'd go Birth, Johnny, Huey
Rattlesnake, Birth In Reverse, Prince Johnny, though tbh any 3 song stretch in this album is amazing, this album really sold me on St. Vincent
Surgeon
Northern Lights
Strange Mercy
Three different types of songs that are all fantastic examples of Annie’s songwriting ability functioning at the highest level
