      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

While Monster is seemingly self-aware of the peril in glorifying Jeffrey Dahmer, creator Ryan Murphy's salacious style nevertheless tilts this horror story into the realm of queasy exploitation.

Kelly B Evan Peters is incredible, he is so very watchable and just an amazing actor. I really enjoyed this series and which is why I gave it 5 stars. I am a true crime lover and for that reason alone I was hooked. I have read lots on Dahmer so wasn’t coming in fresh with no prior knowledge. With this series, I found myself feeling a little sorry for Dahmer, as it delves into his life & background. Where this is important from a profiling perspective & obviously his experiences shaped who he became, I feel it did mean that he was shown in more of a positive light, instead of the dangerous predator that he was. I think there is a fine line between glamorising and boosting serial killers egos & telling the story to keep the victims memories and deaths alive - for me this crossed that line a little. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/19/24 Full Review Audience Member A purely intense series that portrays the insanity of a serial killer. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/29/24 Full Review Peter F It's a well-made show and served as a good distraction while I was working. But it was easy to look away at my work because the show just felt kind of gross and disturbing. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/05/24 Full Review Nathalie D The cast is... incredible. I was hooked from beginning to end. This series is underated and should have been acclaimed for its cast quality. The way the story is told - going back and forth in the 70's, 80's and 90's is very efficient. It is a beautiful horrible movie! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/08/24 Full Review Tyler S Overall, I think this told Jeffrey Dahmer's story really well. Thrilling, intense, and even a little emotional. There were definitely a few things that I didn't understand in which I hope they handled it better. Still a really good series. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/03/24 Full Review Stefan N The series is good per se, but I couldn't continue watching. It was too much. Slow to build and nail-biting creepiness Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Jessica Winter New Yorker It’s quite possible that “Dahmer”—despite brilliant performances from Nash, Peters, and the great Richard Jenkins as Dahmer’s father, Lionel—has no real justification for its own existence. Dec 8, 2022 Full Review Andrew Male Times (UK) A slow-burn descent into a grotesque damaged world, bolstered by Evan Peters’s chillingly believable central performance... Oct 24, 2022 Full Review Melanie McFarland Salon.com It is gruesome, disturbing, and unnervingly precise in re-creating Dahmer's history and the legend that has arisen around him. It is also an example of how the Ryan Murphy brand can be at odds with a story's mission. Oct 1, 2022 Full Review Mini Anthikad-Chhibber The Hindu Though the Netflix show, based on the life and crimes of the serial killer, purports to tell the victims’ stories, it ends up cannibalising its own good intentions. Oct 4, 2023 Full Review Akos Peterbencze Vulnerable Man (Medium) While I don't think that the series is a complete miss, I can't help but feel that there was a much greater potential to fulfill here. Jul 25, 2023 Full Review Steve Murray ArtsATL Except for the sixth episode, which turns away from the tedium of Dahmer himself to focus on the life of one of his victims, the show is a chore...
