The band shared in a track-by-track video:
Jesy: ‘DNA’ is our second single, and this is the one that I get most excited about because it’s my type of music. It’s so hard-hitting, it’s a bit spooky, and it’s just completely different. It’s a complete different change to ‘Wings.’ [It’s about] being so in love with someone that it takes over you and you become obsessed. Kinda a bit like a bunny-boy love, but more extreme. But it’s so lovely as well, because when you actually strip back the instrumental, it is a love song and it’s a beautiful song, so it’s nice to have quite a hard-hitting, spooky side of it, then strip back the instrumental and it’s a beautiful love song.
Leigh-Anne: It was kind of a way of showing a more dark side [of the band], and also showing the versatility. And it’s just showing that Little Mix can actually be a little bit sexy as well.
Perrie: I think for us on The X Factor, the Halloween Week was one of the weeks where people looked at us and thought, ‘woah, they actually stand a chance.
Jade: We wanted to write about a boy, but not in a typical way. […] We came up with the whole… scientific words to match up with our feelings, and that’s where the ‘DNA’ concept came from.
Perrie explained to Artist Direct:
‘DNA’ was one of our favorite songs. We thought it would be such a sick name for an album. We believe that what we’re doing now was always in our DNA. We were born for this. We thought it was a nice title.
