Simon Hughes confident Curtis Jones is becoming a 'top player'

Liverpool have produced some real talents at the academy down the years. The most recent superstar to rise through the ranks is Trent Alexander-Arnold, the Scouser emerged from the academy to become the world’s best right back. We have a new youngster to celebrate this season, Simon Hughes of The Athletic has said Curtis Jones is becoming a ‘top player’.

Liverpool batter Leicester City

Curtis Jones was a standout performer this weekend as Liverpool battered Leicester City at Anfield.

The Reds were in the driver’s seat throughout on Sunday evening as they went joint top of the table on points.

A trio of headers sealed the victory. Jonny Evans nodded into his own net from a Liverpool corner after 20 minutes, shortly before halftime Diogo Jota headed home an Andy Robertson cross.

In the second half Roberto Firmino rounded off the scoring with just minutes remaining, a goal he desperately needed.

Speaking on The Athletic’s Red Agenda podcast, Simon Hughes spoke highly of Curtis Jones after his performance against Leicester City.

The Scouser was confident on the ball and grew into the game as it went along, he certainly did enough to keep his place in the side. Hughes told the show:

“I thought Curtis Jones, for me, is showing signs of becoming a top player.

“I do think he could become a really good player for Liverpool.

“There were a few question marks a few years ago about his tactical discipline but the defensive side of his game was excellent against Leicester.”

Liverpool have a real gem on their hands with Curtis Jones.

The Scouser was in fine fettle against Leicester City and he looks intent on maintaining his top form.

He did more than enough to retain his place in the side and given the current injury crisis he may well do just that.

Fingers crossed this really is a breakout season for him, if he keeps up his regular appearances there’s no reason it won’t be.
