About
Cummins Falls is the 8th largest waterfall in Tennessee. Hiking and swimming are the favorite activities in this park. More information on this park and many more can be found at the TN State Parks website. Gorge Access Permits are required to access the gorge or the base of the falls and can be purchased online only on the Cummins Falls page of the Tennessee State Parks website. While gorge access is limited to 100 people per day, access to the overlook and other hiking trails above the gorge will not require a permit. All permit users will be required to watch a safety video before accessing the gorge. Access to the gorge and base of the waterfall is only allowed during fair weather conditions and is subject to change when rain appears anywhere in the watershed.

IT IS A HIKE BUT WORTH IT
this hiking adventure was one for the books. Up on the top of the mountain there are clearly marked trails, but then when you get down to the base of the mountain at the river there are no trails only rocks and barely foot paths. It was an amazing hike. Don’t get me wrong, but it is not for the faint at heart. This walk is difficult, you pass over top of the river multiple times, and you have to climb big rocks at some point during the hike to the base of the waterfall. Make sure that when you go it’s a clear day in the sky, otherwise, if it starts to rain, they will tell everyone to get out of the water and off of the waterfall. This is for safety, and I totally agree with it. but good luck getting back up the steep mountain when it’s raining. There are literally little Rivers coming down the mountain while you’re going up with slick clay. Be careful and know that it’s worth it if you love a closer look or just want to jump in the water at the basin.

    Beautiful experience
Number one wear water shoes!!! expect to get wet. If you walk the bottom, part of the river, you will be walking through water and over slippery rocks. Pick a beautiful day and enjoy. You can take a ton of beautiful pictures. I would also recommend a waterproof phone holder. It was absolutely gorgeous. I did not hike the top of the falls even though I wanted to. Maybe next trip. Highly recommend

From VA to TN, so happy we made this stop!!
I am not an avid backpacker or hiker, like my significant other. I do however really enjoy unique experiences and seeing the beauty of state parks and outdoors. It's about 1.6 mile hike down through a quite open (but rocky) terrane to see the waterfall. You'll take quite a steep walk downhill to get to the gorge. I wore my hiking boots, and I was really happy I wore them. I think sneakers with any type of tread will work, but I'd definitely avoid wearing Converse or Vans, flip flops, sandals, or going barefoot anything that doesn't have a tread or is flat. You'll walk across water, mud, locks of rocks, many wet rocks (which I and plenty others slipped on). Ha! The biggest challenge was the high incline back up to the entry way. I myself would not consider myself out of shape, but it was a steep climb back up, which they warn you about - but I don't think anyone really grasp it until they come back up. lol. I would not recommend for very elderly unless the overlook was available. It was closed when we went. There is also a $6 permit fee (per person) to walk through the gorge to see the waterfall, so make sure you bring card/cash. Cute ice cream shop and other stuff on your back out. It was really fun!

Cummings Falls was scheduled for the morning we would be returning home after our nine day vacation.

At dinner the night before, everyone seemed to be getting a little tired and we thought briefly about heading home first thing in the morning.

I am sure glad we did not head straight home! It was DEFINITELY worth a few hours of our time to go there before heading home.

It is a bit of a hike. It is about a 1 mile trail and it is definitely rough terrain. But don’t let that scare you because there were three-year-olds doing the trail.

But when you round the corner and see the falls, you will be amazed by the beauty.

Don’t waste any time getting in the water. It only feels cool for a minute.

Do be careful of slippery rocks however. Be careful with every step you take. Try and step on the smaller rocks and gravel. The larger rocks, especially if they are wet, are mossy and very slippery.

Going down there this morning was the best decision we made.

One definite recommendation is to go down early. It gets busy really fast. We got TO the falls themselves around 10:30 AM and there were only two other people there before us. By the time we left around one, there were probably 50 people there and many more on the trail headed down to the falls.

It cost our family of four $26.50 and we all said it was the best $26.50 we ever spent.

The park had very kind and helpful employees. Very clean bathrooms at the visitor center. We first took the hike to the gorge, which does require a pre purchased permit to access. I would also recommend checking the website or Facebook page before going to make sure the gorge itself is open.

The hike itself was quite intense! It’s not really marked at all once you reach the river. It’s pretty steep downhill with lots of roots and then you get to the river itself. There is initially a pretty obvious trail on the left but eventually you just have to pick a place to cross the river. We ended up backtracking a little to find a shallower spot. We passed a smaller waterfall on the right of the river that could easily be missed. Once you reach the big waterfall itself there are huge rocks to climb around or over. But it was definitely worth it! I felt like I earned that beautiful view! For me the whole hike was exciting and adventurous, I would do it again in a heartbeat.

We didn’t swim due to the high water hazard risk since it had rained a lot the previous week. There was even a ranger at the falls monitoring the water levels, I really appreciated him being there.

Cumins Falls is Beautiful! The trees are just starting to blum. As it began to rain it seemed the new grass responded imeditly & turn a surreal color green the roring river received the rain as if it were mating. I saw cows laying down enjoying the new rain. The hollars were still step amidst the winding roads. .
A beautiful spot for a prom too Wedding.
WOW what a seductive setting for Pease.

My husband and I visited Cummins Falls State Park on a hiking trip to TN. It happened to be a very hot day when we visited, so the falls were pretty busy with swimmers. We ended up only walking to the top overlook then leaving because we didn't want to hike down and be surrounded by people. You needed a paid pass to walk to the falls, which we had, but we just ended up considering it a donation to the park. It was beautiful, though!

Enjoyed our visit to the park. New park with New Visitor's center and limited infrastructure. Short hike to the falls ovelook, ok - not spectacular as you have a limited falls view.

"Gorge Access Permits," available on the State Park website, are required to hike to bottom of falls. This maybe a challenging hike for many as it walks you back up the rocky gorge floor with several water crossings. So come prepared. The gorge floor at the base of the falls is where the swiming area is located.

Trail system was clean and well maintained. Enjoyed seeing the old homestead.

Staff in visitor's center was plesasant but not overly friendly as one would expect from a TN state park. Nice gift, drink selections. Clean facility. Enjoyed our visit.

My daughter wanted us to travel to Tennessee to hike Cummins Waterfalls. We were going to visit during December but decided that if we had to wade in the water, it would be a more enjoyable trip if we did it during the summer months. Unfortunately, mother nature decided that it wasn't in the cards for us. This summer has been very rainy and on the day that we went, we drove 1.5 hours just to find out that our planned hike was not happening. We did hike to the overlook to see the waterfall, but no one was allowed to go down near the river. Prior to our arrival at the park, we couldn't find information about whether or not gorge access was available. If you are going to hike to the waterfall, make sure you find out if there is gorge access that day. Otherwise, you will be disappointed!

Also, in the summertime, it is very hot and humid! So bring lots of water and bug repellent!

When we arrived at the covered entrance to the trail, the guide told us it was about a 1/2 mile hike to the viewing area. That was good enough for us. When we arrived we saw a beautiful view of the gorge and the falls. There was nobody in the gorge at the time, since apparently you could hike to the bottom of the falls. The hike itself wasn't as bad as we thought it would be. There were some areas we stopped to catch our breath but that was it. A new visitors center was being constructed during our visit. The wife thought this was the best part of our trip to Tennessee that weekend. The falls itself isn't that far from Tennessee Tech and Cookeville.

We visited here 2 times on our week in the area. The first day on a weekend and it was very busy we just walked to the overlook . Then midweek we went back and walked down to the falls and played in the water. It was an amazing hike and fun going thru the creek to get to the falls. I would highly recommend walking to the bottom but wear good comfortable water shoes. Hike over on the falls themselves and just feel the power of the falls and take in the beauty. I saw lots of fish while hiking up the trail beside the water.

This park was across from our campground and was a little gem. It's a relatively new park created in 2012. The visitor center is clean and the rangers were friendly. The highlight of the park is the Cummins Falls and swimming hole. The trail to the base was closed while we were there due to high water levels so check before you come. There is a limit to the people in the gorge each day so make reservations online. The hiking is basic, but the trails give you a good view of the gorge or an easy hike through some old fields.

The falls are impressive. We were there on the July 4th weekend and it was very busy. If we visit again it will be on a week day. There is a cost to go down into the gorge where you can walk to the falls and swim in the area below the falls. We just went to the overlook on this trip. If you are going into to gorge, bring footware appropriate for wading through the river - you will need to do this to get to the falls.
