What is ‘Cruella’ about?
“Cruella” will tell the story of how Cruella became the infamous villain from the “101 Dalmatians” series. It will show Cruella — who has the name Estella at this time in her life — as she tries to build a criminal career in London. She links up with Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson) at some point in the film and soon becomes more in line with her inner wickedness.
Here’s the full Disney description of the new film, which was sent in an email to the Deseret News:
“Academy Award® winner Emma Stone (“La La Land”) stars in Disney’s “Cruella,” an all-new live-action feature film about the rebellious early days of one of cinemas most notorious — and notoriously fashionable — villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil. “Cruella,” which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar winner Emma Thompson (“Howards End,” “Sense & Sensibility”). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.”

Analysis of ‘Cruella’ trailer
Like the first trailer for the film, there are some definite “Joker” vibes here. Obviously, Disney isn’t going to release something as dark and menacing as Joaquin Phoenix’s “Joker” film from 2019. But there are some definite vibes of someone who had a normal way of thinking being thrown to the dark side because of the unfortunate events that occurred to them. It is an interesting decision by Disney to rebuild the Cruella de Vil character brand as something of a Joker character. But it does make sense when you consider her huge fault is trying to kill dogs — something that the comic book version of Joker would definitely have done.
