      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

This darkly comic drama and its attractive young cast are easy on the eyes, but uneven performances and an uninspired script conspire to foil Cruel Intentions.

Kristy Puchko Pajiba 20 years later, you can see the charm that made Witherspoon a star, appreciate Blair's comedic splendor, and recognize that Phillippe was handsome and is also in this movie. Mar 27, 2019 Full Review Kevin Thomas Los Angeles Times Cruel Intentions is a stretch for all concerned, including the targeted audience, one that pays off handsomely--and works for older moviegoers as well. Mar 21, 2019 Full Review Andrew Sarris Observer At this infantile level of appraisal, I suspect that Ms. Gellar and Mr. Phillippe may have a harder time next summer than last. Mar 21, 2019 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Though it’s utterly devoid of upright morals and wholesome characters, there’s something amusing about how dastardly and conniving the two leads can be. Trafalgar L Roger Kumble's attempt to modernize "Les Liaisons Dangereuse" provides a lewd, lascivious and downright cruel story. As summer draws to a close wealthy aristocrat Kathryn Mertueil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) makes a bet with her stepbrother Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Philippe) that if he can seduce and corrupt the new headmaster's daughter before school starts she'll have sex with him, if he loses she gets his most prized possession; his vintage Jaguar car. But, Sebastian finds himself genuinely falling in love with dangerous consequences. Phenomenal performances from Gellar, Philippe, Resse Witherspoon and Selma Blair. "Cruel Intentions" takes everything we love about the 90s teen films and twists it to a degree that it's still charming but dark. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/25/24 Full Review J.D. C A brilliant film nicely produced and highly entertaining. It will keep you glued to the screen with it's wit, humor and nicely done screenplay. The cinematography is amazing. Keep in mind this movie was made when we were all young. Highly recommended. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/24 Full Review Cindee G Definitely not Close and Malcovich not the best version but works for teenagers. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/05/24 Full Review Christian K I am so glad the Ryan Phillippe experience was relatively short lived, he is so awful in this. I just struggled to find anything that pulled me in with the plot or characters, most are insufferable and show no consistency. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/17/24 Full Review Hasna A A drama with a splash of teen romance. The storyline is soap opera material, and I don't complain about it. I really love how Sarah Gellar portrayed a cunning mischieful teenager with lots of morale issues. My favorite part is definitely the ending scene the downfall of Sarah Gellar with the verve song is a cinematic legend. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/21/23 Full Review Holly I love it! I still have a crush on Sebastian after all these years! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
