Bluejay Baseball Cages Eagles with 10-Run First in 24-0 Opening Day Win

Hanover, Md. -- Creighton Baseball couldn't have written a better script to open the 2024 season as the Bluejays scored 10 runs in the top of the first as Creighton defeated Coppin State 24-0 on Friday, February 16.

The win lifted Creighton to 1-0 on the season, while Coppin State fell to 0-1.

After leading 10-0 heading into the bottom of the first, Creighton tacked on five runs in the second and six more in the third to put the game out of reach early at 21-0 after three frames.

The Bluejays first saw Gillen single, an error allowed Teddy Deters to reach, then a fielder's choice put runners at the corners. Creighton pushed across its first run of the season on a double steal allowing Gillen to swipe home. Later in the frame Jack Grace smashed a two-run homer to make it 3-0.

The inning continued on two-out singles from Nolan Clifford and Hogan Helligso, then a fielder's choice off Kyle Hess' bat loaded the bags. A pair of RBI walks pushed it to a 5-0 lead, then Deters delivered a two-run single and Nolan Sailors capped the frame with a three-run blast, giving Creighton a 10-0 edge.

Dominic Cancellieri set the tone for the pitching staff with four scoreless frames to pick up the win (1-0), while four other hurlers completed the shutout with five scoreless innings.

Four Bluejays finished the contest with multiple hits, led by a 3-for-3 performance with four runs scored and four RBI from leadoff man Tate Gillen. Teddy Deters shined in his Creighton debut, going 2-for-4 with four RBI, while Hogan Helligso and Sam Vomhof each delivered a pair of hits.

The Bluejays and Eagles continue their three-game series on Saturday, February 17 at 12:00 p.m. (CT).
