So many bands have come along since the late 60's that people tend to forget about Cream, it seems. Jimi Hendrix set the guitar world on its ear, Eric Clapton has enjoyed a hugely successful solo career, and drum legends John Bonham, Keith Moon, and especially Neil Peart constitute the trilogy of worshipped drummers among drummers. John Entwistle, John Paul Jones, Geddy Lee, and more recently Flea and Les Claypool are the bass gods. AHEM...before all those guys (except Clapton, of course), there was CREAM...and they were indeed the cream of the crop! Sadly, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce's individual legacies have not withstood the subsequent emergences of the aforementioned greats, at least to the degree they should have. Clapton's own career has kept his own legacy alive and well respected, but in the late 60's these three guys were IT. Picture in your mind Slash, Les Claypool and Neil Peart joining forces in a new band--whoa! Well, that's how it was when Baker, Bruce and Clapton formed Cream in 1966...
If you go back and listen to Cream's live recordings, the intensity and musicianship of each of the three members still stands up to any blues rock act out there, and together as a band...they STILL can't be touched! This DVD shows how it all happened, and it's very complete...no glaring omissions of facts that I noticed. This DVD would both be a great lesson in the history of rock and also a way of allowing you to appreciate the greatest band of the late 60's! It's no secret that Cream helped set the stage for hard rock and heavy metal...but that's just one of their many influences on rock music...their music itself is also something to enjoy for ages to come!!
Each of the three members were interviewed specifically for this DVD, and they spill the beans entirely...especially Ginger Baker, who STILL seems to be irritated with Jack Bruce...some of his comments are hilarious!

I rate this five stars because for me it is a documentary about my favorite musical group of all times. For the more casual viewer, perhaps the Disraeli Gears DVD or the Cream 2005 Reunion DVD might be better options. They both contain more footage of the band playing music. Also, I would recommend the 4-CD collection entited "Those Were The Days" is a collection of every song that Cream ever recorded prior to their 1969 breakup.
I play drums, and the style of music that Cream played ... a spontaneous musical conversation between three masters of their respective instruments ... is something that inspires me. It was a perfect equilateral triangle. Ginger Baker is my greatest inspiration among drummers.
So, for ME, this in depth look at the band's history is both wonderful and painful to watch. But while the 1960's was one of the most creative decades in musical history, the behind the scenes life of the musicians, from the Beatles to Cream, was not always what it appeared to us on the surface. There were dues to pay. There were arguments behind the scenes. Only the diehard fans want to see this history in all of its raw reality. I am one of those.
If you are not one of those, then I would more highly suggest the other DVDs in the Cream collection. For me, this is essential viewing.

It's a good 40 minutes into this film before you hear the first notes of music, and precious little after that. There is almost no footage of live performances, and just a few snippets of studio recordings. What you get instead is two hours of Cream's members (Jack Bruce, Eric Clapton, and Ginger Baker) along with some producers, writers, and other members of the entourage, reminiscing and griping about the past. Some if it is interesting, and some (especially Baker's bitter ramblings) is just sad. Clapton remains an interesting figure to this day, but the film dwells a little too much on his godlike reputation. The film opens with a buildup about their reunion tour, then falls back into the history of how the band came together. The whole time you think they are going to return to the present day and show some of the reunion performances. Never happens. Very disappointing production. The production on this was about as exciting as a 60 Minutes segment, but it goes on for 120 minutes.

I had high expectations regarding the dvd/cd and here is the result: cd with stockholm concert was many times issued on bootlegs so it came as no surprise with same sound effect. DVD has plenty of interviews and the songs from revolutionary club were issued on dvd fresh live cream.Huge dissapointment is coming from no performance in 1993 (Hall of fame) and 2005 (Madison) they only interview people about the concert - joke or what? Better buy Jack Bruce Cream of Cream dvd.

This is simply one of the best executed rockumentaries I have ever seen. The main programme features almost 2 hours of interviews with key protagonists in the Cream story such as Chris Welch (Melody Maker stalwart and band biographer) Ahmet Ertegun, Pete Brown and the impressively informative and likeable Ben Palmer (pianist in Eric's earliest bands and Cream roadie). The interviews, interspersed with live clips and archive footage, are neatly segmented to show the genesis of the band from the Graham Bond, Alexis Korner days to the final Albert Hall appearance. The recent interviews particularly with Ginger show exactly why the band imploded at the height of its massive popularity. Infighting, jealousy and being ripped off - are laid out in powerful and often bitter reminiscences. There is also a bonus 80 minutes of expanded interviews and around 30 minutes of full live performances at London's Revolution Club and TV appearances in Sweden and Germany plus a mimed BBC TV performance introduced by the risible DLT. The bonus CD, also from Swedish TV, is previously unreleased and is a great companion to Cream at the BBC. Whilst not in magnificent hi fi, it is interesting to hear their early repertoire which relies heavily on the stuff they played in their previous bands. Sadly it is less than 30 minutes long. Picture and sound quality plus menu selection and packaging (20 page booklet with several (to me previously unseen) photos) are all top notch. A genuinely lavish must see for fans of the world's most influential (and in my very humble opinion best) band.

Cream DVD - Great Content Frustrated by Patchy Play Back
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 13, 2015
This is a great DVD for any Cream fan, which I've been since 1966. There's some great content and interview footage from the band and various expert pundits, which for me was previously unseen. Only problem is that it was very nearly unseen this time round with this DVD, which started freezing in the first minutes od Disc 1 and each time I reloaded the disc it would only play for about 4 minutes at a time before it froze and the picture fragmented again. The disc appeared to have feint scratches, which thankfully Disc 2 doesn't have.......so I'm hoping for better viewing when I muster the patience to try playing it.........so much for quality control. What do I expect for such a cheap price? Well something that works......pity as it really is a great and insightful DVD with unique tracks played by Eric and an interview with the late Jack Bruce, plus one or two with the ever grumpy Mr Baker.......perhaps his copy of the DVD didn't work either.
