Coronation Street star Simon Gregson responds to Steve and Tracy's split storyline

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street star Simon Gregson has responded to Steve and Tracy McDonald's split storyline.

Viewers will know that Tracy's affair with former footballer Tommy Orpington was recently exposed, and Simon has suggested that Steve has been left "devastated" – though more so given how he idolised Tommy.

"He’s been coping with it quite well I think, all things considered," he admitted. "He seems to have accepted she’s had an affair, well on the outside at least, but he’s absolutely devastated at how Tommy could do this to him.

"He gets why Tracy is attracted to Tommy but he’s just so upset that his idol has done this to him. I think there’s so much going on at once that he’s not properly put it together yet."

In the wake of the revelation, Tracy admits to Steve that she was bored in their relationship, Simon explaining that "Steve was just resigned to being Steve", quipping: "He’s a bloke, very very simple creatures (laughs).

"Whereas for Tracy, she’s living in her dad’s house, they’re all top of each other and I think she’s just had enough," he continued.

"She wants more for her life and she thinks the grass is greener which of course we all know it rarely is, well maybe it is for a while but then it’s just the same grass elsewhere. She may eventually start to realise that but in the meantime Steve’s very, very hurt.

"It’s all happened so quickly that I do think he still wants her back. He thinks this is just a flash in the pan, maybe he has let himself go over the years and maybe he needs to try harder, so he’s prepared to try change himself to save his marriage."

Scenes airing next week will see Steve find a letter from Tommy addressed to Tracy, the star explaining that "it’s like everything has fallen in his lap" and "he thinks if he gets rid of the letter, he can stick to his plan and put his family back together".

"Yes Tommy’s written a love letter to her, but they’ve had a whole life together, they’ve known each other since they were kids, surely she’s just being a bit daft," he noted.

"What he doesn’t realise is Tracy has genuine feelings for Tommy so not sure it’s going to work out quite this way for poor Steve."

The star suggested that Steve would be "devastated" if Tracy – who next week announces plans to leave Weatherfield and join Tommy in Spain – chose a life with Tommy over him.

"The thing is he’s been there many times before so I don’t think it would take him long to pull his socks up and just get on with it, life’s too short and all that," he said.

Simon also spoke a bit about filming the scenes, revealing that it's "always fun doing argument scenes".

"Kate [Ford] is such the polar opposite of Tracy, that just makes it even more fun for us as friends to play out," he added. "It’s always better to have fun with the scenes otherwise it’s work and who wants to work for a living."

He also praised Tommy actor Matt Milburn as a "lovely guy", elaborating: "He’s very good at what he does so it’s just been really nice. Nice, fun scenes, we’ve all really enjoyed it."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
