There are no amount of superlatives to give to Ashford Castle that haven’t been bestowed on it already. As the title says … it’s one of a kind. As soon as you drive onto the castle grounds and witness the magical moment the castle sliding into view on your right … you know you’re about to experience something truly special. I’ve stayed in castles before, but nothing comes close to the Ashford experience. It is a legitimate part of Irish history; a genuine, real-life, intact castle; and yet, still manages to be one of the most luxurious hotel experiences possible in the world!

Everything about this place is exceptional. We dined in the George V Dining Room … it was a Michelin star experience with all the service theatre you’d expect from a Forbes 5 star hotel. We did archery and the hawk walk … they were amazing fun with great instruction from the ground staff. We walked the immaculate, awe-inspiring grounds every day … it was an almost unreal experience of extravagant beauty. We drank cocktails in the Prince of Wales Bar … there was real flair in the mixology on display and everything tasted fantastic.

There is also so much variety. Ashford is obviously an expensive venue, but unlike many hotels, you could easily spend a week there (fair play to you if you can afford that!), not leave the hotel grounds, and not get bored. There are loads of activities and restaurants. Don’t like fine dining? Go for a diner burger at Stanley’s. Don’t like clay pigeon shooting? Go for a boat trip around the castle and island.

If I had to give an example of the sheer ridiculousness of the standards on display here, it would be breakfast. A lot of luxury hotels have a sommelier for dinner. Ashford also has a “Smoothy” sommelier at breakfast to help try specific smoothies with your Irish fry.

Yes, you read that right.

What’s absolutely certain about your visit to Ashford Castle is that it will live up to all your expectations. And if you’ve booked this place, you will likely have very high expectations indeed. Faultless hotel.

Enough said.

Stayed in Ashford Castle following 2 nights in Dromoland Castle (part of package). We left Dromoland extremely happy, having thoroughly enjoyed our stay. However on arrival at Ashford Castle, it was immediately clear the hotel is operating on another level. Very professional and COVID-19 aware welcome, everything is wiped down and you immeditately feel relaxed / everything appears to have been thought of.

We were celebrating an anniversary and were lucky enough to be upgraded to a Junior Stateroom, which was incredible and offered amazing views over Lough Corrib. We were also provided chocolates and a glass of bubbly on arrival.

Ate in the George V the first night, great good and service, very relaxed. Stayed in the restaurant for hours enoying our 5-course meal. Bar for a cocktail before was excellent, impressed with the American sized pours (thanks Mike). After dinner there was live music and more top notch cocktails.

Pool was open and can book a slot (best to do this ahead of time), which actually takes the stress out of things. Got some great weather and did the 1 hour boat tour of the lake - definitely recommend.

Dinner in Cullens by the Cottage the 2nd night, more casual but very enjoyable seafood focused menu, with prices pretty reasonable for the quality.

Staff throughout our stay were amazing. Service was as good as I've ever experienced. Would call down for something and it would appear in seconds. Can't wait to return in November. Thank you.

The Castle and grounds are spectacularly gorgeous and stunning. The rooms are nice, although peace and quiet are a bit hard to come by as the building is quite old. We tried to sleep in to combat jet lag and were excited by the thick curtains, window shade, and AC. But the clanking and notices throughout were constant.

We stayed the night of the Mayweather v McGregor fight. The hotel awesomely showed the fight in its Cinema for free and provided popcorn, candy, and drinks. They also made the fight available in rooms so that guests didn't have to get up at 4am and get dressed to watch in the Cinema. This was a very nice touch.

The piano player in the lounge is a wonderful addition for after dinner drinks. Great voice, takes requests, and humors older drunk folks who probably shouldn't be sharing the mic with him.

If you're looking for a one of a kind place to spend some away time and some serious money, this is the place for you. There is no shortage of things to do (for a cost), from wine tasting to boating to zip lining and falconry.

It's about a 45 minute drive from Galway and once you're here, it's easy to relax and count your lucky stars.

I enjoyed my stay here. the general comfort, food restaurants and public areas are all excellent. I loved and enjoyed the cottage restaurant, it was warm, friendly, informal and a very good menu. the spa was tops, great treatment in relaxed surroundings. I had a good experience in their George V restaurant, however it did not represent value for money in my honest opinion.

The grounds are stunning. you can get lost for hours just rambling which I did. wildlife abounds in various forms and the landscape architecture and ambiance beyond perfect.

I felt let down by the room. I specifically requested a walk in shower which I was obliged with, but the room itself felt cluttered and cramped.. I would really ask someone from your management team to sit in one of the chairs in this room 304 for an hour or so and try and watch TV. They are neither practical or comfortable and are geared for the ambiance of the room rather than the comfort of the guest.

a turndown service consisted of putting a menu and chocolate on the bed. It was poor. Housekeeping in my room certainly did not come near the standard I have experienced in other LHW properties. However much had to do with the bed itself. 2 beds shoved together to make 1 are difficult to make.

Finally, I seldom make requests, however on settling my account the night before leaving II asked would it be possible to check out at 12.30 1245. Ill have to speak with my manager and get back to you I was told "30 minute" really. Needless to say she never did.

Overall a most enjoyable stay. However small things do matter in high end expensive hotels such as Ashford castle

Arrived 28th January, very excited and nervous as we are both 2 very ordinary people. Got to the gate and we were greeted by a gentleman all dressed up and smiling, gave him our name and he directed us up to the castle, driving up to the castle is an experience we will never forget,it is breathtaking. Anyway, when we arrived at the entrance another gentleman all dressed up again welcomed us and took our car and sorted out our luggage. On entering the castle the receptionist came to greet us by name and checked us in,we were offered a drink and tour of the castle before she took us to our room. When we got to our room it was wow wow wow, so perfect,so beautiful. After getting sorted we went to the drawing room for tea. The staff here, and I mean each and every one of them compliment this beautiful castle perfectly, they really do. Dinner in the dungeon was perfect, nothing in the castle has negatives, breakfast next morning was to die for, staff yet again, second to none, ashford castle deserves ten stars as does all of the staff. Could go on and on forever about this place but try it yourself. Heaven is what this place really is,will be back again next Jan. Big big thank you to ashford castle and all of the staff for making 2 ordinary people feel really really special.

We stayed for 2 nights for my birthday in May, we had a Corrib Lake View room in the old part of the Castle. The view was wonderful and could have looked at it all day. The bathroom was very large with underfloor heating, lovely soft towels and high quality toiletries. The bed was one of the most comfortable I have slept in and the sheets were silky smooth.
As it was my birthday I was treated to two glasses of champagne in our room and also some very delicious chocolates.
The hospitality is truly Irish and all staff very friendly, this was pure 5 star and everyone is treated the same so do not feel that you would feel out of place here.
We did the Hawk experience which was very informative and had a lovely time walking through the grounds with the hawks following.
On our second day we used the complimentary bikes to cycle the grounds.
Our meal in the George V Restaurant, which was part of our Dining experience, was
delicious, I can strongly recommend the Strawberry desert.
Breakfast both days was very nice and a varied choice of items
We had dinner in Cong on our first night which the hotel took us into and collected us, but it is only a 10 minute walk
We utilised the complimentary use of the relaxation pool and sauna on both days but you do need to pre book this

A special experience in every way. The arrival down the long drive and first view of the castle sets expectations very high indeed. These expectations were met in every department from the warm welcome at the top of the drive to the check out experience a few days later.

This is a place for a special treat, it is expensive but the overall experience delivered value for money. There are lots of staff in every area of the hotel and all of them were immaculately turned out, they all knew their job and they were all friendly and happy to engage. In some top end hotels the staff make you feel uncomfortable or that they are doing you a favour, ( The Ritz in London is a good example), here they were on hand when needed, they noticed when something was wanted or not right, they were good fun.

The castle is hugely atmospheric and the bedroom we had was a very good size, had wonderful view over the lough and everything in the bathroom worked exactly as it should do. Great to walk around the corridors and explore the art gallery, the library and the billiard room. Hours of walking in the fantastic grounds and surrounding countryside.

Dined in the George V as well as the Dungeon restaurants. George V is fairly formal but great good, great service and a good wine list. In the Dungeon I enjoyed one of the best bits of Sole I have ever had in this more relaxed and smallish venue.

Didn’t get to enjoy al the great activities on offer from clay pigeon shooting, equestrian, climbing, golf etc. But did enjoy the boat trip which is 2 minutes walk from the front door of the castle, nice commentary although PA system might benefit from an upgrade, great views of the castle and totally relaxing

This place is special and worth saving up for. As a special treat I would recommend it very highly

We recently stayed in Ashford Castle with our 3 children to celebrate a special occasion. This was our first visit to the hotel in nearly 10 years having stayed a number of times in the past. The refurbishment of the hotel which has been carried out by the Red Carnation group is beautifully and sensitively done. Ashford Castle was fortunate to have been acquired by owners like the Tollman family who are clearly sensitive to the specific requirements of each individual property in the Group.

The hotel and property retains all of its old charm, but new additions have been sensitively added (the Spa and gym, cinema, billiards room and cigar terrace and Stanley's diner). The bedrooms and bathrooms have been upgraded and refurbished and are extremely comfortable.

Above all, and as others have said, it is the staff that make the property so special. Many old faces are still working with the hotel, and the new additions are attentive and a pleasure to deal with. The food and beverage offerings are all at a level that you would expect for a property of this calibre.

We had a wonderful and very special weekend - reliving some old memories and creating new ones. If you get a chance to visit, you should take it. My advice - for what its worth - is to make the most of your stay in Ashford and not plan to spend too much time off the property. There is a lot to see and do in the grounds of the Castle itself, and the village of Cong is on the doorstep and deserves a wander whether on foot, or on one of the hotel bicyles. Slow down, take your time, relax and just enjoy the pleasure of being there. It is amongst the best that Ireland has to offer if you are looking a top end experience and it is a unique property both in terms of its setting and its staff. We hope to return again.

Dear dd101, Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on this return visit. After an absence of 10 years, you have seen the greatest single improvement on our hotel product. The hotel today is in delightful contrast to that which you experienced 10 years ago, but has always maintained its most prized asset - a passion for service and a genuine welcome. I am so happy to read that you enjoyed our location, service levels, new facilities and food and beverage options. We look forward to any opportunity to welcome you back to Ashford Castle - hopefully it will not be so long this time.. Warmest regards, Niall Rochford

Stayed here on a Saturday night in their Corrib room.

The castle and estate is beautiful and the staff are excellent. The room was tiny (recognising it’s their cheapest room type), but the bathroom was excellent with a great view of the river.

Dinner in Cullens Cottage was nice and very good value.

The wolfhound walk in the morning was fantastic, as was the breakfast which followed.

There were two main issues which really impacted our stay:

1. We arrived at 2:50pm for our 3:00pm check in, only to be informed our room wasn’t ready yet. We then had to wait almost an hour before getting the key. The delay was barely acknowledged until I raised it when getting the room key, at which point they offered us a drink in the bar (which we then had to remind them of when checking out).

2. The pool - while it is stunning, it is tiny. We used it on both days, and on each day we had to wait in the spa reception (25 mins on the second day) until a lounger came free. While we waited other guests arrived but gave up without waiting. While at the pool we didn’t want to stay too long knowing other guests were waiting to get in.

The hotel is fabulous overlooking Lough Corrib and the service is exceptional.
Some staff had that bit extra spark that made our stay even more special.
We were greeted at the castle entrance, greeted at main hotel entrance, car and luggage dealt with and sent straight to the room, personal escort check-in and a tour of the hotel and finally taken to the room.
Lovely welcome messages with drinks and condiments in the room.

A few minor points:
Our Lake room was a bit too small with the seating area against the TV made it a little uncomfortable sitting on the bed.
The room had a faint damp smell.
House keeping was very inconsistent and we had to phone and ask for things that should have been part of normal clean.
The mattress kept slipping away from the headboard which was overlooked by house keeping so by the end of our stay there was a gap in which the pillow was getting stuck, making sleeping a little uncomfortable.
We are used to having having a few cups of very light black tea, jasmine tea or Americano coffees and not having this option in the room meant paying for them every time we wanted simple black tea or coffee.
The boat trip; we were not pre warned that it can be quite cold but luckily we took warm clothing.
The main reason why we chose the afternoon boat trip was for the live Irish music but that was missing
Also, had to use the toilet on the boat which was not to a satisfactory standard but a little dirty.

The falconry was one of the most amazing things I’ve done. It ranks right up there with Space Camp. So yes, I’d say it’s a definite. The only other activity we did was the boat. I would skip that. I did walk the trails where the horses ride and it’s lovely. I’m glad I just walked them though bicycles would allow you to see more and go to town.

I only had breakfast there and it was very casual. Considering it' still on the cooler side, slacks and a sweater or similar would be fine for women, slacks with jacket for man. Certainly not black tie!
