      Season 1 – Comrade Detective

      2017 Comedy Action List
85% 26 Reviews Tomatometer 88% 100+ Ratings Audience Score In the thick of 1980s Cold War hysteria, the Romanian government created"Comrade Detective" to help promote Communist ideals and inspire a deep sense of nationalism in the country's residents. In the gritty police drama, detectives Gregor Anghel and Iosef Baciu investigate the murder of a fellow officer and, in the process, unravel a plot to destroy their country. Fueling that conspiracy is Romania's greatest enemy -- capitalism. The series was forgotten about after the fall of the Berlin Wall, but it has been rediscovered and digitally remastered to be seen by modern viewers. Now, though, the heroes' dialogue has been dubbed, with their voices provided by Hollywood actors Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Comrade Detective mixes history and humor to create a bizarre hybrid of familiar detective tropes and foreign propaganda techniques that hits more often than it misses.

Audience Member Few shows make me laugh out loud as often Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I LOVE this show. Can't quite explain "it" to people, but I will die on this hill. This show is great Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Communist Romanians somehow produced a TV show in the 1980s that so accurately satirizes modern-day anti-capitalists, it's almost as if it was written & filmed in the modern day. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member God I love this stuff. Fat Americans eating Twinkies and cheesburgers. Sweaty violent guys driving around in bumper cars smoking cigarettes. Woody Allen where are you ? Whats Up Tiger Lilly ? Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review andrei d Smart but it could have been smarter and better produced Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Joshua S It's listed as a comedy, but I didn't catch myself even wanting to laugh once. It made for a decent drama though. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/20 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Johanna Schneller Toronto Star . . .six hours of this stuff is wearying. When Woody Allen did something similar in his 1966 film What's Up, Tiger Lily? he was smart enough to keep his parody to a brisk 80 minutes. Aug 18, 2017 Full Review Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald And yet for all its off-the-wall wackiness and occasionally rococo caricatures, Comrade Detective is, in its own unique way, quite a serious little bit of telly. Aug 17, 2017 Full Review Robert Lloyd Los Angeles Times It's a sketch the size of a miniseries, a molehill made into a mountain. Aug 16, 2017 Full Review Sean Mulvihill FanboyNation.com This isn't a series that's going to be widely accessible to broad audiences, but if you're willing to go along with the hard-boiled lunacy you'll find a show that's unlike anything else on television (broadcast or streaming). Rated: 3.5/5 Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Alan French Sunshine State Cineplex Finding its way past the original gag might be the biggest hold up for some, but once you're in, it is hard to stop. Rated: 4/4 Oct 10, 2018 Full Review Pattie Pegler Stuff.co.nz It's different and pretty funny, and worth checking out. Aug 31, 2017 Full Review Read all reviews
