THAT SAID: NAZZ was the BEATLES, WHO, CREAM and YARDBIRDS of Upper Darby, Pa..These 4 guys, led by Todd Rundgren, were eighteen when they broke thru with the most versatile single since Eleanor Rigby/Yellow Submarine: Open My Eyes/Hello It's Me. Instrumentally, they were equals to any in the above mentioned bands but with a youthful enthusiasm and, more importantly, a songwriter who could write "Paul" songs and "John" songs with Laura Nyro thrown in the mix.
Any fan of late 60s British rock will love these guys as I have since the age of 12 back in '68.
Good sound quality for the era, with some unnecessary outtakes.
I was lucky enough to see Nazz live in early '69 at a small teen club outside Chicago and while still mourning the breakup of the Yardbirds and having already seen the first tour of an opening act, Led zeppelin , the Nazz live, to me, was what I expected the yardbirds to have sounded like had they not imploded. I digress.
Every time this material gets rereleased, it forces me to reevaluate this phenomenal short lived band. The first album is pretty much flawless power pop and would go on to influence the best of them later on - cheap trick, shoes, etc. The second album is much edgier and harder sounding and has probaby spent more time in my ears than any other piece of music over the last 50 years. The tracks from Nazz 3 were left off of the aborted double lp concept of nazz nazz. Some with good reason. Todd's fascination with Laura Nyro was getting a bit too obvious and reached a cloying level with "old time lovemaking". There is some great rock on the 3rd slbum, however, and one wonders what would have happened had they continued.
Sonically, this is a beautiful set. Great playing and songwriting are in abundance. The outtakes are all noteworthy and in my opinion, the alternate Meridian Leeward is a bit better than the final version.
Strap yourself in the way back machine and enjoy a 50 year old snapshot of the future of power pop, rock ballads and the new heavies.
