The Creation were charged mid-'60s mod rockers whose catchy, well-constructed songs echoed the most aggressive work of the Beatles, Small Faces, the Kinks, and the Who. The group recorded a handful of blistering songs that rate among rock's most visceral, melodic, blistering three-minute nirvanas. These ahead-of-the-curve numbers were dramatically enhanced by Eddie Philips's delicately controlled feedback-drenched guitar work (heightened by the use of a violin bow sawed across the guitar strings with incredible malice). "Making Time," this collection's opener, is such a revved-up, anthemic number that fans of garage grace will not mind at all that three different versions of it are included. Other highlights include the loud, druggy "How Does It Feel to Feel" (based on a line from Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone") and a surprisingly poignant cover of Otis Redding's "That's How Strong My Love Is." There is also a companion volume that's quite nearly as essential. --Mike McGonigal

Back in 1965 there was a record label in both the USA and the UK known as Planet Records and featured a handful of artists, A Wild Uncertainty, The Thoughts and The Creation just to name a few. Well, The Creation was a rather complex band, not only in their music,but also, their constant change of band personnel. In the Beginning, Ken Pickett-vocals, Eddie Phillips-guitar, Bob Garner-bass and Jack Jones-Drums were the band that lasted a couple of singles. Those singles, Making Time and Painter Man, were released on Planet Records and, by the way, were two really the most splendid records I have ever heard. When they moved on from there, they changed personnel just slightly and went to The Famous Charisma Label where they had re-released those two singles and added about 10 more songs and thus made an album of it. That slight change by the way was Kenny Pickett had left and Bob Garner took over on vocals and Kim Gardner of Ashton, Gardner and Dyke fame became the bassist. Another album, although most of which were the same songs became the album known as "We Are Painter Men". After that excursion came another split and re-enter Ken Pickett. Also the addition of Ron Wood, yes the same guy, came in and took over the bass chores, gone were the Garner and Gardner. Anyway, this version of the group recorded two more singles Midway Down b/w The Girls are Naked and How Does It Feel to Feel b/w Life is Just Beginning. The group then became defunct until the 90's when they recorded two more albums, "Power Surge" and "Psychedelic Rose". The former was the original band reunited and the latter was Phillips, Garner and Jones as Pickett had passed away. However, these two albums showed that The Creation still had what it took to cook if you know what I mean. They are, to me, two fantastic classics and should have gotten more recognition then they had received. Sadly, though, this was a band that really was a truly great work of musical art and never got one minute's time of recognition. A real shame and they will be sorely missed. By the way this review is for both Making Time Volume One and Biff, Bang Pow Volume Two as they are pretty much linked together at the same era of the 60's. All songs from both volumes are really truly fantastic and deserve a lot of attention as this group were highly underrated and really really looked over. Also, there are other cd's available on the Repertoire label cds - We Are Painter Men, The Best of The Creation are two more compilations including even earlier days as The Mark Five and Mark Four and their early singles and demos.
The Creation never had the sort of commercial success that came to the likes of the Kinks and the Who, two bands whose most exciting and energetic moments were also captured by Shel Talmy, the Creation's producer. They also adopted the art-rock pop-art mod image of their peers and their guitarist Eddie Phillips pioneered the violin-bow techniques that distinguished their sound on groundbreaking singles like Making Time and Painter Man, which appeared on Shel Talmy's Planet label. Perhaps the lack of major label backing or a string of line up changes hindered their chances of fame.
At any rate, their exciting stage act was not to blame. During live performances of Painter Man, which reached no. 2 in Germany, for example, singer Kenny Pickett took to creating a spray painting, the finished canvas being slashed to pieces by violin bow or set on fire at the end of the show, to huge acclaim.
The band never released an album in their lifetime though there have been some compilations, The Complete Collection being the most comprehensive. It is split into 2 separately available CDs, Making Time and Biff Bang Pow! Both feature singles from the period 1966 and 1968, as well as unreleased tracks, alternative and stereo mixes, live performances and the like. Vol. 1 has the A-sides Making Time, How Does It Feel To Feel and If I Stay Too Long, with B-sides, while Vol. 2 features Painter Man, Life Is Just Beginning and Midway Down, with their B-sides. Well worth exploring.

Do you like the Who? Then you will love the Creation. Incredible English mod band from the 60's, they sung the lead track on the movie Rushmore ("Making Time") possibly the coolest rock song I have ever heard. The entire album is wonderful, except for the U.S. version of "How Does It Feel to Feel" (UK version is much better). The Creation is so good it is truly a mystery that they never hit it big. Wonderful stuff.
Fans of the mod-soaked Brit invasion stuff of the Who/Kinks/Action/Small Faces universe will enjoy this lengthy CD comp. Searing guitar, snotty lyrics and Moon-esque drumming highlight this mesmerizing snapshot of the mid-60s mod era in England. The Creation is much more influential than you think today -- people even named a label after 'em (Creation Records, silly). Hey, if Pete Townshend was a member of this band's fan club, then you know they gotta rock!
These guys were great and Eddie Phillips is a highly under-rated guitarist who influenced Pete Townshend and Jimmy Page. If you like Shel Talmy's prodution on early Who songs, you will love this CD. After Eddie Phillips left the band, he was replaced by Ron Wood who shows up on Vol. 2.
