Walker is getting an assist from a familiar face as Cassie partners up with Detective Luna (played by Walker Independence vet Justin Johnson Cortez) on the Jackal serial killer case in tonight’s episode (airing at 8/7c on The CW).
This isn’t the first time Cortez has made an appearance on the series, but it is the first time that he and Ashley Reyes’ character have teamed up, and TVLine has an exclusive sneak peek at their introductory meeting.
In the above video, Cordell hands over background material on the Jackal investigation to Cassie and tells her that Luna will fill her in on the rest. As Cassie listens to the recording of Ranger James being questioned about the killer, she drives up to a seedy motel, where she’s startled by a knock on her driver’s side window. But the hooded figure is no stranger (to viewers, at least).
Working alongside Luna on the Jackal case will lead Cassie to learn “a hard lesson,” the official episode synopsis teases. Meanwhile, “Walker’s lies about the Jackal case finally catch up to him, testing his friendship with his old partner, Captain James.”
Cortez played Calian on the Walker spinoff, Walker Independence, which was cancelled after just one season. Addressing whether the axed offshoot and its characters will get closure on the mothership show, Walker showrunner Anna Fricke told TVLine, “We couldn’t get into that this season because that’s sort of a delicate thing, because it was a whole separate show. But that was, obviously, a story that we really wanted to tell and keep telling, and we got very invested in the history of those characters. So that’s always a possibility in the future.”

Glad to see Cortez again. Now if they would just get rid of Stella’s storyline. So tired of her angst and drama.
