Get to Know You: Coban Porter
Freshman guard Coban Porter is joining the Denver men's basketball team in 2021-22 following his high school career. Porter brings a high level of focus and ability to the Pioneer backcourt. 
 
Q&A with Porter
Why DU?
I chose DU because I trust Coach Wulbrun and the rest of the staff, and I really believe we can make something special happen here.

What made you fall in love with the game of basketball?
I've always loved to see hard work pay off, whether in basketball or in life in general. So around middle school when I started getting older, and working harder, and seeing the fruits of my labor come to fruition, I began to fall in love with the game and the grind more and more.

When did you know you could play at the Division I level?
I've believed from a young age that I can play at the highest level, honestly. My parents and older siblings set the bar so high and laid the blueprint out before me, I knew all I had to do was put the work in and trust it.
 
What is your favorite basketball moment?
t was your favorite basketball moment growing up and why?: My favorite memories playing basketball growing up have to be playing "21" or "2-on-2" with all my brothers in our driveway at home, or on the street in the cul-de-sac.
 
Have any of your family members played collegiate or professional sports and what team/position did they play?
My dad played at the University of New Orleans, mom played at the University of Iowa, and my four older siblings all played at the University of Missouri.
 
Growing up playing basketball, who had the most influence on the development of your game?
My dad! He was always there for me and always pushing me to be the best version of myself, both on and off the court.

Who was your favorite basketball player and team growing up and why?
My favorite player ever, since I watched him and Kentucky play Missouri several years ago, has been Devin Booker. Not only his mentality, but his fluidity on the court, and his ability to score the ball is something I look up to and try to imitate.

Describe your style of play and how it affects the game?
I believe I'm a high-motor guard who can score the rock and get teammates involved, but will also take on the challenge of defending the other team's best guard.

Favorite moment of getting to know your knew teammates at the University of Denver?
We all kicked it at the pool on the Fourth of July and had a great time. It was pretty cool to hang out all together as a team on the holiday.

What does the a basketball family look like to you?
A basketball family, to me, is a group of men who come together with the same agenda in mind: to win. But it's also a community of players, coaches, and staff who grow together daily, and form a bond that goes far beyond the court.
