Fun but flawed.
Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 31. Oktober 2015
As alluded to in the other reviews, this is really two albums in one. 8 tracks are the Adderley quintet backing up Cleanhead on vocals. The other four are instrumentals with Cleanhead on alto playing with the quintet except Cannonball lays out - apparently acting as producer. The vocal tracks are great stuff. Vinson's singing hits the spot and the quintet provides the greatest non-guitar backing you can imagine. It's a masterclass on how instrumentalists should play in, say, a blues jam. The solos are short - one or two choruses - yet full of originality. The back-up licks are appropriate yet non-cliché (note that Cannonball messes one up in "Kidney Stew"). So this part of the album deserves 5 stars.
It's the instrumentals that are more problematic. Vinson struggles a bit and his horn is poorly miked (that's on you, Cannonball). Granted, Cannonball had a monster tone and was the best player of his time, but they could have turned up the volume on Cleanhead. Although Vinson is the weakest soloist, the rest of the group contributes pretty blah solos as well. The instrumental selections basically sound poorly rehearsed. The strangest thing is that all four instrumentals were written by Vinson and they are not in conventional blues forms, and he nails the melodies. So he wrote songs that he could not easily improvise to (at least at these tempos)! So kudos for Cleanhead and team for being adventurous, but it is not as satisfying for the listener. Eddie Vinson was a great blues improviser and I would have loved to hear him soloing on just a regular old blues. So this part of the album deserves 2 - 3 stars.

Cleanhead and Cannonball - Eddie 'Cleanhead' Vinson with the Cannonball Adderley Quintet
Rezension aus dem Vereinigten Königreich vom 14. Dezember 2015
Recorded in 1961/2 this is Cleanhead with the then current Cannonball Adderley band, and very good it is too. Cleanhead was working mainly in local clubs but had somewhat dropped out of sight. They ran into each other in Kansas City, and Cannonball, realising this man was too good not to be recording, used his considerable clout to organise a date. Cleanhead always was a good singer with what I suppose you would call a wellhung voice, full and dominant but always relaxed, a little like a slightly quieter version of Big Joe Turner. And, just like Joe, he was always at home with the blues, and couldn't help swinging no matter what. Here, he is in sympathetic company with Cannonball's band. He sings on eight tracks, including his big hit 'Kidney Stew', a version of Jimmy Reed's 'Bright Lights, Big City' (almost wholly successful although he and Reed didn't have much in common), and Big Bill's 'Just A Dream'. The others are all attractive originals. Four tracks are instrumentals, where Cleanhead plays some powerful alto, sounding very much like Cannonball. The unfortunate thing is that Cannonball does not play on any of the tracks where Cleanhead does, so we are deprived of what would have been a big battle between two powerful, and similar, altos.
The band is very good. Sam Jones and Louis Hayes drive the rhythm along, the drummer using more backbeat than usual, but never too much, and the bass, in the hands of a master, being the heartbeat of the whole band. Cannonball erupts from the ensemble from time to time to produce some forceful alto, and Nat, in his quieter way, plays some pleasing interludes on the cornet. Joe Zawinul, on piano, doesn't produce a lot, but doesn't get in the way.
All six men sound comfortable and completely at ease in what they are doing. It is muscular music, but not raucous. Very satisfying, really!

Cleanhead & Cannonball on fine form in 1961/62.
Rezension aus dem Vereinigten Königreich vom 17. Februar 2014
Alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley(1928-1975) and his quintet joined forces effectively with blues singer/altoist Eddie 'Cleanhead' Vinson(1917-1988) on these two sessions recorded in Chicago on September 19, 1961 & New York City on February 14, 1962.
With Adderley & Vinson were Nat Adderley(cornet); Joe Zawinul(piano); Sam Jones(bass) & Louis Hayes(drums).
The 12 tracks include 8 vocals and 4 instrumentals composed by Vinson with the highlights being Vinson's 'Kidney Stew', 'Person To Person' & 'Back Door Blues' plus Big Bill Broonzy's 'Just A Dream'.
'Cleanhead & Cannonball' is an entertaining and varied album which makes a valuable addition to any jazz or blues collection.

Asbestos Gloves Required
Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 27. Oktober 2002
Stunning, awe-inspiring. Can we believe that Mr. Clean actually got into the studio with Cannonball?! No holds are barred. No prisoners are taken. Several volumes of The Riot Act are read. Clean sings on all but a couple of instrumentals. On the instrumentals Cannonball plays backup (!) and Mr. Vinson plays blistering blues alto sax. Burning. Smoking. Absolutely cosmic. Be careful about what you're doing when you put this on.

Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 23. August 2017
Great album, but Cleanhead does falsetto yips at the end of lines sometimes, an occasional tic that really annoys me. But I love the guy, and you can't have better accompaniment than Cannonball and the band! So I really should give this 4 and 1/2 stars.
