After establishing the promising premise, Cleaner requires that you overlook a lot of implausible plot turns--but if you can suspend your disbelief, there's a lot to enjoy. Jackson gives a typically skilled performance; like Gene Hackman, Jackson is an actor who never fails to deliver a solid, engaging, thoughtful performance that lifts everything around him. Ed Harris also provides his craggy charisma and Luis Guzman (The Limey) continues to be an indispensable support player. Eva Mendes, on the other hand, comes across a bit flat, though she is as lovely to look at as ever. Director Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2, The Long Kiss Goodnight) oversells the story--this twisty tale of corruption and overheated love would probably play better with the lean, cool, minimal production values of film noir, rather than Harlin's constantly prowling camera--but he definitely infuses the movie with bubbling energy. The movie can be slow at times but makes for a good watch. The movie does have a very good twist at the end. Without giving too much away, The protagonist owns and runs a crime scene clean up company. He gets an order and completes the order the same way he always has. When he goes to get the payment he finds the homeowner has no idea what he is talking about. He plays it off but becomes worried that he was used by someone who knows the procedure to release a crime scene to his company. It could mean someone on the force, that he retired from, is the killer. The entire movie makes a good use of several methods to keep the suspense. The movie could have been faster paced but I understand why it was not. Preformances were all good.

Excellent movie! There’s two storylines running parallel. Suspense begins at the start and travels through out the movie. When you think you know all the answers, you get turned around to something else. Once reaches the climax of the movie, you can go back through the movie to understand what really happened! This is one of my favorite movies. I’m a big Samuel Jackson fan so all of his movies are my favorites BUT even if I didn’t know the characters in this movie, I would still love it!

I had gotten frustrated, because I was watching the movie via one of the streaming sites on line and wasn't able to see the whole. Great actors and acting, excellent direction, fascinating cinematography, haunting sound track, and an engrossing plot make me wonder why this film went straight to dvd and didn't open in theaters. Characters you can really care about, involved in thought-provoking, moving situations, make this film emotionally touching in addition to all the suspense. Gorgeous cinematography, with scenes shot in a stark way, from unusual angles, added to the tension. The main character's occupation is one you would never think about, but once he explains it, it seems obvious that someone would have to clean up murder scenes. The job even seems mundane, until one leads him into a complicated cover-up with surprising twists and danger at every turn. I took a chance buying this film, because I usually don't like thrillers, and I enjoyed it much more than I had thought I would because of its psychological and emotional depth in addition to the plot that just grabs you.

Sorti en salles en 2007 en France, ce film est passé inaperçu, ce qui est vraiment dommage. Réalisé par Renny HARLIN, il fait partie de ses meilleurs films des années 2000, avec « Profession Profiler » en 2004 et « Le Pacte Du Sang » en 2006. Réalisateur star des blockbusters « Die Hard 2 » (58 Minutes Pour Vivre en français) et « Cliffhanger » qui ont été tous les deux de très gros succès aux box-office mondial, respectivement en 1990 et en 1993, ainsi que du méconnu « Au Revoir à Jamais » qui s’est malheureusement soldé par un échec commercial en 1996, il revient en force avec ce thriller.
On retrouve la patte du réalisateur, qui met en scène une trame solide et efficace. On entre dès le début du film dans le vif du sujet. Les personnages principaux sont présentés et l’intrigue se met en place. Le sujet est original, il sort des sentiers battus habituellement observés, bien que se passant à nouveau dans la communauté policière, le métier de nettoyeur, assez méconnu et très peu traité au cinéma, est montré de manière très réaliste, les rebondissements se succèdent, le tout emmené sur un rythme fluide, jusqu’au final, qui dévoile la solution.
Après la mort de sa femme, Tom Cutler, un ancien policier, s’est reconverti en nettoyeur de scènes de crimes. Un jour, il est appelé pour effacer les traces d’un assassinat ayant eu lieu dans une résidence de luxe. Il apprend ensuite que le mari d’Ann Norcut, à qui appartient la maison, a mystérieusement disparu. Il comprend que le crime n’a jamais été signalé à la police et qu’il s’est fait piéger. Tom décide alors de tout révéler à son ancien co-équipier, Eddie Lorenzo, afin que celui-ci lui apporte son aide. Il mène alors son enquête afin de découvrir ce qui s’est réellement passé.
Le film bénéficie d’un casting trois étoiles, avec trois stars en têtes d’affiches.
Samuel JACKSON interprète Tom Cutler, ancien flic, maintenant nettoyeur de scènes de crimes. Très vite mis au courant de l’horreur de la situation, il décide de découvrir la vérité. L’acteur est comme à son habitude, très convaincant. Il réussit à rendre son personnage crédible, en insistant sur tous les détails qui forgent sa personnalité et marque ainsi son évolution au fur et à mesure du métrage.
Ed HARRIS incarne Eddie Lorenzo, ancien co-équipier de Tom et également ami très proche, puisque ce dernier est aussi le parrain de sa fille, Rose. L’acteur est parfait, il joue tout en nuances et réussit ce qu’il sait faire de mieux, vêtir son personnage d’une ambiguïté morale, qui amène le spectateur à se demander quel est son rôle précis dans cette histoire, bien plus complexe qu’il n’y parait au départ.
Eva MENDES joue le rôle d’Ann Norcut, épouse d’un mari disparu. Elle cherche à en savoir plus et va aider Tom dans ses investigations. L’actrice est très crédible, interprétant son personnage avec juste ce qu’il faut de sobriété et de retenue. On comprendra mieux avec les séquences de la dernière partie du film, son comportement quelque peu en retrait ainsi que ses motifs personnels.
Côté technique, le Blu Ray est digne du support HD. L’image est réellement superbe, les couleurs sont lumineuses et agréables, le contraste est très bien traité, notamment lors des scènes nocturnes. Le son est très correct, légèrement supérieur en VOST, même si la Version Française bénéficie d’une belle qualité également. Aucun bonus vidéo sur la galette. A noter que le film n’est pas contenu dans un boitier plastique, mais dans un boitier métallique du plus bel effet.
En conclusion, voici un très bon thriller, qui se veut efficace, que ce soit au niveau de la forme ou du fond. Basé sur un scénario bien ficelé, il est certes classique dans sa réalisation et quelque peu académique, mais n’en demeure pas moins un très bon divertissement, sans prétention. Il remplit parfaitement son rôle de film à suspense et reste prenant du début à la fin.

"Cleaner" is a polished little gem of a b-movie noir thriller and a surprise entry on the cv of director Renny Harlin who steps away from the slam bang action world to focus on a more character driven low key thriller.

Working with a small cast of characters (all played to the hilt by a top notch bunch of faces) and keeping the story tight as a drum (not one of the 86 minutes of the running time are wasted) Harlin shows that there is more to him than blowing stuff up... Ok so the ending is a little too Hollywood but that to me is just a minor quibble.

The bad news is that the dvd don't do the film justice on the presentation front, surely the commentry from the American disc could have been ported over and why is the film presented in 1.85:1 widescreen when it was shot in 2.40:1???

Ahh well at least the film makes up for these small glitches!
