Claudia Winkleman is set to swap the glamour of the Strictly Come Dancing ballroom for murder and betrayal in a Scottish Highlands castle for new BBC One gameshow The Traitors.

TV presenter Winkleman has been announced as the host of the new psychological contest that will see players try to work out who they can trust in a bid to win a £120,000 prize pot.

Contestants living in a castle will be split into "Traitors" and "Faithful", but none of the Faithful will know who is in the Traitor group - who each day will pick a member of the Faithful to "murder".

Winkleman said: "I’m obsessed by psychological games and I couldn’t stop watching the Dutch version of the show. The fact that the BBC version is set in a castle in Scotland and the producers want me to wear tweed meant I was all in."

As the show's host, she will pick who the Traitors will be, with the double-crossing group meeting in secret each night to choose which member of the Faithful will be "murdered".

Whoever is picked off will not appear at breakfast the next morning and all of the players will meet at the Round Table to try to work out who they suspect of being a Traitor and then banish that player.

The group must also work together on tricky physical and mental challenges to win money to add to the prize fund.

By the end of the competition, only a few players will be left - if all of them are Faithful, they will split the £120,000 jackpot, but if a Traitor is among them they will take the entire prize for themselves.

Mike Cotton, deputy creative director of Studio Lambert who are making The Traitors, said: "The series is a nail-biting psychological adventure game and Claudia is a huge fan of the format and is the perfect puppet master to oversee this dramatic game set in the heart of the Scottish Highlands."

The 12-episode series has already begun filming in the Scottish Highlands and is expected to air on BBC One later this year.
