Christo and Jeanne-Claude (amerikanisch)

Christo (amerikanisch-bulgarisch, geb. 1935) ist ein Bildhauer, der für seine einzigartigen eingewickelten Werke, von kleinen eingewickelten Büchern bis zu ganzen Gebäuden oder Naturlandschaften, bekannt ist. Christo wurde als Christo Vladimiroff Javacheff geboren und ging in Sofia an die Kunstakademie, wo er sich mit dem sozialistischen Realismus beschäftigte. Er zog nach Prag und machte sich mit den Werken der frühen europäischen Moderne vertraut. Später zog er nach Paris, lernte seine Künstlerfreunde Yves Klein und Jean Tinguely kennen, die ihre künstlerische Bewegung Neuen Realismus nannten. Christo lernte in Paris auch seine Frau und künstlerische Partnerin Jeanne-Claude Guillebon kennen. Die beiden arbeiteten für Werke im öffentlichen Raum zusammen und Jeanne-Claude übernahm die finanzielle und organisatorische Leitung vieler großer Werke der beiden.

Christo begann Anfang der 1960er Jahre damit, kleine Gegenstände, wie Dosen, Bücher und Möbelstücke einzuwickeln und er dehnte dies später auf Holzkisten, Autos und Fahrräder aus. 1964 zog er mit Jeanne-Claude nach New York, wo sie an großen Skulpturen für den Außenbereich arbeiteten, darunter ein Brunnen in Italien, die Kunsthalle in Bern, dem Running Fence, einem Zaun aus Stoffbahnen entlang der kalifornischen Küste und Wrapped Coast, einem Küstenstreifen in Australien. Sie erhielten positive als auch negative Kritik für ihre Skulpturen und Installationen, darunter die Verhüllung der Brücke Pont Neuf in Paris oder die Aufstellung von Schirmen in Japan und in den Vereinigten Staaten. Eines der beeindrucktesten Werke von Christo und Jeanne-Claude ist der verhüllte Reichstag in Berlin, der auf den Wandel nach der Wiedervereinigung anspielte. Neben den eingewickelten Werken, für die oft zahlreiche Assistenten notwendig waren und sehr kostspielig waren, aber vollständig von Christo und Jeanne-Claude finanziert wurden, entstanden auch viele Kollagen und Werke auf Papier zur Planung der Skulpturen. 2005 ließ Christo für The Gates Stoffbahnen im Central Park in New York herabhängen. Er lebt seit dem Tod von Jeanne-Claude 2009 in New York.
