Illumination and Nintendo to Produce New ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Movie

Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto take to YouTube to share the news - while plot details are still firmly under wraps, the new animated film project doesn’t appear to be a sequel but rather a fresh take on Mario’s world; the release is set for April 3, 2026.

Wahoo! Illumination and Nintendo will team on another animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros. Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and director, Fellow of Nintendo Shigeru Miyamoto announced the exciting news in a short video to fans during Sunday’s “Mario Day” festivities.

“It’ll have a bright and fun story,” Miyamoto teased. “This time we’re thinking about broadening Mario’s world further. […] We’ll let you know [more] once we’re at the stage where we’re ready to share.”

Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic will direct from a script by Matthew Fogel. While plot details are still firmly under wraps, the film has not been positioned as a sequel to last year’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Meledandri and Miyamoto produce. The film will be co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo and distributed theatrically worldwide by Universal Pictures.

The new Super Mario Bros. film is set to release starting on April 3, 2026 in the U.S. and in select territories.
