    2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Overview

Is the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 a Good Truck?

Yes, the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 is a great full-size truck. It has a lineup of potent engines, ranging from a turbocharged four-cylinder and a pair of V8s to a turbodiesel straight-six, and each hustles the pickup around swiftly. It's comfortable and composed to drive, whether on the highway or in city traffic, and it offers impressive towing and hauling capability. And thanks to some major updates, the Silverado now boasts a suave cabin with some of the best tech and driver assistance features in the segment, including the optional Super Cruise hands-free driving system.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Dimensions and Weight

    • Length: 17 feet, 7 inches to 20 feet, 2 inches
    • Height: 6 feet, 4 inches to 6 feet, 7 inches
    • Curb weight: 4,369 to 5,290 pounds

Should I Buy the Chevrolet Silverado 1500?

The refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado is a must-see if you're shopping for a full-size pickup truck. It's an adept workhorse and a well-rounded family hauler, and it's reasonably priced for what you get. Still, the Silverado faces strong competition from domestic rivals like the Ram 1500 and Ford F-150. You might want to give all three a look before you buy.

    2021 vs. 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500: What's the Difference?

Chevrolet split the 2022 Silverado into two lineups: 1500 and 1500 LTD. The former receives major updates, including a restyled grille and headlights, a redesigned interior with an updated infotainment system (LT trims and up), a new ZR2 off-road trim, and additional standard safety features like forward collision warning (part of Chevy Safety Assist). This refreshed Silverado also has an upgraded four-cylinder engine with an extra 82 pound-feet of torque, and it's newly available with GM's Super Cruise hands-free driving system.

The 1500 LTD, or Limited model, is essentially a carryover version of the 2021 Silverado. Read our 2021 Silverado review for more information about that model.

Here are the key changes for the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 over the last few years:

    • 2022: midcycle refresh with updated interior and exterior styling, a new infotainment system, more standard driver assistance features, available Super Cruise, and an upgraded four-cylinder engine; off-road-oriented ZR2 joins trim lineup

    • 2020: adaptive cruise control and Duramax turbodiesel engine made available
    • 2019: fully redesigned (start of fourth-generation Silverado) with updated styling, more available driver assistance features, and an optional turbocharged four-cylinder engine

    Pricing

How Much is a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?

The 2022 Chevy Silverado has a base MSRP of $34,600. That's an average starting price for the full-size pickup truck class, but it climbs quickly as you ascend the trim ladder. The Silverado LT – the lowest trim available with the redesigned interior – starts at $45,700, while the ritzier LTZ and High Country trims retail for $54,700 and $59,800, respectively. The range-topping Silverado ZR2 starts at $68,400.

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Versus the Competition

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 vs. GMC Sierra 1500

The GMC Sierra is ostensibly an upmarket version of the Chevy Silverado. Both of these GM trucks offer the same engines, transmissions, beds, and body styles, as well as many of the same tech and driver assistance features, including Super Cruise. Even the interior styling is similar, and GMC offers its own take on the rugged Silverado ZR2 with the new Sierra AT4X.

Both are great trucks, and choosing between the two may be a matter of price or personal preference. The base Silverado costs about $800 less than the cheapest Sierra. Conversely, the top Sierra Denali Ultimate trim offers a level of luxury that the Silverado can't quite match, albeit at a cost of more than $80,000.

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 vs. Ford F-150

The Silverado's latest enhancements have substantially narrowed the gap between it and the Ford F-150, but the gap hasn't closed completely. The F-150 carries a lower starting price than the Silverado by about $4,100, and it offers considerably higher max payload and tow ratings. Ford also offers superior off-road ability with the F-150 Raptor and its long-travel suspension, though the Chevy fares better for predicted reliability. Ultimately, both are great pickups, and they have similar driver assistance features, bed and body styles, and powerful-yet-fuel-efficient engines. Test-drive both to see which you prefer.

Silverado 1500 Performance: Work Hard, Play Hard

    Silverado 1500 Engine

The refreshed 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is available with four engine options: a 310-horsepower turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder, a 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V8, a 420-horsepower 6.2-liter V8, and a 277-horsepower turbodiesel 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder. An eight-speed automatic transmission is paired with the four-cylinder engine, while the others are mated with a 10-speed automatic. Both rear- and four-wheel drive are available.

Despite its small displacement, the base turbo-four engine moves the Silverado around town and up to highway speeds with confidence, and it enables reasonably swift passing maneuvers. Gear changes are smooth and prompt as well. It's a fine option for those with longer commutes and light-duty needs, but it sounds a bit raspy under hard acceleration.

The 5.3-liter V8 and straight-six Duramax diesel are similarly potent, and both shuttle the big Silverado around with ease. Plus, neither sounds as strained as the four-cylinder when pulling a heavy load or accelerating hard. Upgrade to the 6.2-liter V8, and you'll find a veritable powerhouse that enables authoritative acceleration and passing power to spare.

    Silverado 1500 Gas Mileage

The Silverado's fuel economy ranges from thrifty to thirsty, depending on engine choice. A Silverado with the turbodiesel inline-six returns an impressive 23 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, making it one of the most fuel-efficient options in the class. Models with the base four-cylinder yield a decent 19/22 mpg city/highway, while those with the big 5.3- and 6.2-liter V8s get up to 16/21 and 15/20 mpg, respectively. Notably, these ratings dip when adding four-wheel drive.

    Silverado 1500 Ride and Handling

The Chevy Silverado's driving dynamics are quite good by pickup truck standards, but they don't hide its body-on-frame origins as nicely as the benchmark Ram 1500. The Silverado's suspension does a decent job of sopping up bumps and dips in the pavement, particularly on models with the smaller 17- and 18-inch wheels, resulting in a mostly smooth and compliant ride. The ride can get jittery when optioned with larger wheels though. The Silverado feels stable and surefooted around turns, its steering is light and responsive, and the brakes slow down the truck confidently. It's reasonably easy to maneuver and park in tight areas as well.

    Silverado 1500 Off-Road Performance

Any four-wheel-drive Silverado has what it takes to venture across rough terrain in one piece, but those with a penchant for off-road excursions will want to stick with the Trail Boss or – if you have deeper pockets – the new ZR2, thanks to their additional ground clearance, skid plates, low-range gearing, chunky tires, and locking differentials. The Silverado manages to find grip in harsh conditions, and its suspension articulates well over uneven terrain at low speeds. Still, this is a big truck, and it's harder to pilot along overgrown trails than the equivalent Chevy Colorado.

    Silverado 1500 Towing Capacity

The Silverado 1500 offers a maximum towing capacity of between 8,900 and 13,300 pounds, depending on configuration. The latter is one of the highest tow ratings in the full-size pickup segment, and it handily beats the Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan, though it falls shy of the Ford F-150.

Silverado 1500 Interior: Moving On Upscale

    Silverado 1500 Interior Quality

The 2022 Silverado's greatest asset is easily its refreshed interior. The cabin is far more upscale and modern-looking than before, and it's anchored by an impressively updated widescreen infotainment system. The interior materials both look and feel nicer as well, and there are even some convincing wood and aluminum accents on upper trims, though hard plastics still abound in infrequently touched areas. Road and wind noise remain muffled, and the Silverado's large windows and tall ride height afford a king-of-the-road driving experience.

The caveat, however, is that this new interior is only found in the LT-and-up trims. The base WT and Custom trims still feature the outgoing model's dated design and cheap materials.

Silverado 1500 Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

The 2022 Silverado is available with two different infotainment systems. The WT and Custom trims feature a 7-inch touch screen that works reasonably well, but it looks woefully outdated by today's standards. We suggest opting for the LT-and-above trims, which are treated to a far more modern and user-friendly 13.4-inch touch screen.

The new system's graphics are crisp, responses are prompt, and the menu structure is intuitive. The touch screen's large size and landscape format also make it easy to see while driving, and it has ample real estate for displaying multiple functions at once, like navigation and music. Google's virtual assistant is included as well, and it can adjust a variety of settings with natural speech recognition: "Hey Google, set the air conditioning to 67 degrees." Physical buttons and knobs on the dashboard make those adjustments pretty simple, too.

The new touch screen is complemented by a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. It's sleek-looking and highly configurable, allowing you to display as much or as little information as you'd like.

    • Standard infotainment features: a 7-inch touch screen, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, two USB ports, and a two-speaker stereo
    • Available infotainment features: a 13.4-inch touch screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless device charging, a Wi-Fi hot spot, four additional USB ports, satellite radio, and six- and seven-speaker sound systems
    • Additional standard features: remote keyless entry and push-button start,
    • Other available features: a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, remote start, and a sunroof

    Silverado 1500 Cargo Space

The Chevy Silverado is available with three bed lengths: a long bed (8 feet, 2 inches), a standard bed (6 feet, 7 inches), and a short bed (5 feet, 10 inches). The standard bed is available with all three cab styles, the long bed is exclusive to the Regular Cab, and the short bed is limited to the Crew Cab.

The Silverado's maximum payload capacity ranges from 1,440 to 2,270 pounds, depending on configuration, which is about average for a full-size truck and more than adequate for typical hauling needs, like a load of mulch or gravel. Chevy also offers the Silverado with a Multi-Flex tailgate, which can open and close in multiple ways to help secure bulkier cargo, provide a flat workspace, or make it easier to step up into the bed.

How Many People Does the Silverado 1500 Seat?

The 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 is available in Regular, Double, and Crew Cab body styles. The two-door Regular Cab has three seats. The four-door Double and Crew cabs have six seats as standard, though front bucket seats are available that lower the seating capacity to five.

Regardless of body style, the Silverado's front seats are nicely cushioned and supportive, and there's ample headroom and legroom for taller drivers and passengers to stretch out. The Double Cab's rear seats are plenty spacious for kids and most adults, at least on shorter trips, but the upright seatbacks aren't exactly comfy. The Crew Cab's rear accommodations are downright palatial, even for 6-footers, and the seatback angle is much more relaxed.

Vinyl upholstery and a manually adjustable front bench seat are standard. Options include cloth and leather upholstery, full leather upholstery, power-adjustable front bucket seats with heating and cooling functions, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel.

The Silverado Double Cab and Crew Cab models have two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat.

General Motors builds the 2022 Silverado 1500 in Indiana and Mexico.

Which Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Model Is Right for Me?

The 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 is available in a wide variety of configurations. There are three body styles (Regular, Double, and Crew Cab), three bed lengths (5-foot-10-inch, 6-foot-7-inch, and 8-foot-2-inch), four engines (a four-cylinder, a diesel six-cylinder, and two V8s), and eight trims: WT, Custom, LT, RST, Trail Boss, LTZ, High Country, and ZR2.

These configurations aren't entirely mix-and-match, so you might have to prioritize a certain trim in order to get a desired body style or engine. For instance, the 8-foot-2-inch long bed is offered only with the Regular Cab, while the 5-foot-10-inch short bed is exclusive to the Crew Cab. On the plus side, many of the upper trims' features are available on the lower trims, so there's a good chance that you can find a truck with most, if not all, of the equipment that you want.

    Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country

The swanky Silverado High Country is also exclusive to the Crew Cab body style ($59,800) with the 5.3-liter V8, 6.2-liter V8, or 3.0-liter diesel engine. This trim adds heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a power-operated rear window, side steps, and a spray-on bedliner.

Which Silverado Cab Style Is Right for Me?

Chevrolet offers the 2022 Silverado 1500 in three body styles: Regular Cab, Double Cab, and Crew Cab. The two-door Regular Cab only has three seats, and while it makes for a decent work truck, it isn't well-suited for shuttling around passengers.

Consider upgrading to the four-door Double or Crew cabs if you need a truck with family-hauling capability. These models are available in five- and six-seat configurations, and the Crew Cab in particular offers adult-friendly back-seat space with up to 43 inches of legroom. The Double Cab's rear seat affords 35 inches of legroom, which is more than sufficient for kids, and it's tolerable for adults on shorter trips, but the seatback isn't as comfy or reclined as in the Crew Cab.

Which Silverado Bed Length Is Right for Me?

Chevy offers the 2022 Silverado with three bed sizes: an 8-foot-2-inch long bed, a 6-foot-7-inch standard bed, and a 5-foot-10-inch short bed. You should opt for the standard or long beds if you plan to haul bulky items like building materials since these beds provide the most cargo space without having to lower the tailgate. The Silverado's highest payload ratings are also achieved with these beds.

That said, the deciding factor in choosing a bed may end up being the Silverado's cab, because not all bed and cab styles are compatible. For instance, the long bed is only available with the Regular Cab, while the short bed is only offered with the Crew Cab. The standard bed, however, is available with all three cab styles.

Which Silverado Model Is Best for Towing and Hauling?

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has a max towing capacity of 13,300 pounds and a max payload capacity of 2,270 pounds. Those are impressive ratings for a full-size pickup, but no Silverado model can provide both. For example, the highest payload rating is achieved by two-wheel-drive Regular Cab models with the four-cylinder engine and standard bed, and the highest tow rating goes to Double Cab models with the Max Trailering package and either the turbodiesel inline-six or 6.2-liter V8.

To keep it simple, we suggest opting for any Silverado model with the Max Trailering package if you want an even mix of towing and hauling capability. Each of these configurations – including four-wheel-drive and Crew Cab models – provides more than 1,800 pounds of payload capacity and roughly 11,000 pounds, or more, of towing ability.

Which Silverado Model Is Best for Off-Roading?

Chevrolet offers a few ways to soup up the Silverado for off-road driving. One of the simplest ways is to spec the Z71 Off-Road and Protection package, which is available on a range of trims. It adds desirable equipment like a two-speed transfer case with high- and low-range gearing, a locking rear differential, skid plates, all-terrain tires, and beefed-up shock absorbers. It should be more than sufficient for drivers looking to reach remote hiking spots or navigate washed-out trails.

The next way would be to opt for the Silverado Trail Boss. Essentially, this trim comes standard with all of the Z71 equipment, as well as chunkier mud-terrain tires and a 2-inch suspension lift for extra ground clearance.

Still, the best off-roader in the lineup is the Silverado ZR2. It bolsters the Trail Boss' equipment with a locking front differential, additional skid plates, and trick spool-valve dampers. The ZR2's off-road ability isn't quite a match for the Ford Raptor or Ram TRX, but it costs a bit less than those trucks, and it's easier to drive in everyday traffic.

Don't just take our word for it. Check out comments from some of the reviews that drive our rankings and analysis.

    • "The new Silverado was somewhat unimpressive upon its debut in 2019. But Chevrolet has continued to chip away at its issues, and the Silverado takes its biggest step forward to date with the 2022 model. We're impressed with the new interior and think the addition of Super Cruise to the Silverado will attract quite a few buyers looking for a modern truck experience." -- Edmunds
    • "The end result is a truck that is immediately more competitive against the Ram 1500 and Ford F-150, especially on the upper end of its model lineup where its cabins were laughable when put up against the Longhorns and King Ranches of the world." -- Autoblog
    • "The best thing about the ZR2 is that it's an off-road truck that offers absolutely no compromises in terms of on-road refinement. Add in Chevy's excellent tech and nicer interior, and the 2022 Silverado is more compelling than ever." -- CNET
