I recently picked up a used copy of the "Chess Blues" 4CD set released back in the early 90's & have been on a major Chicago blues kick lately. I've been listening to lots of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, the "Chess Blues" box, etc.

I've realized that Buddy Guy is sorely under represented in my music collection. I only have a few of his songs scattered across various compilations. So I'd like to get a good CD compilation of his work, but I honestly don't know much about his recording career. Can anyone suggest a good comp? I'm leaning towards the "Complete Chess Studio Recordings" 2CD set released in 1992. Do you think that would be a good place to start?

"The Complete Chess Studio Recordings" is a good choice but also consider Rhino's "The Very Best of Buddy Guy" which is a good cross-licensed compilation of his work prior to signing to Silvertone in 1991 and the Silvertone/Legacy boxed set "Can't Quit the Blues" which features one disk of pre-Silvertone material (quite a bit different selection than the Rhino) and well as two disks of 1991-onwards material and a pretty amazing DVD of career-spanning performances.

Check out Buddy's book, When I Left Home. Great read.

This Rhino comp is a very nifty 18-track survey:

Thanks, everybody. That box set looks tempting, but it looks extremely lopsided in favor of his post-1990 material, no? I think I'd prefer something a bit more balanced.

Very best of Buddy Guy or The Definitive Buddy Guy are probably the best single-disc comps. The latter covers mostly pre-Silvertone material with lots of Junior Wells.

I just bought the Rhino and the Silverstone compîlations.
Is the Chess compilation a good complement? AMG loves it.
