Put simply, this film features Melanie Griffith as a futuristic (or actually modern-day, in 2017) bounty hunterish-type person fighting off a marauding gang of murderous, Hawaiian shirt-sporting, sandwich-loving Golf Dads in a post-apocalyptic wasteland while helping some big city schlub get to a deserted Las Vegas junkyard to retrieve his sex robot. Just your normal average plot.
Weirdest part might be that the schlub's favorite meal appears to be the kind of warmed-over hamburger and fries they serve in elementary schools.
Mostly noted for its absolute camp factor is probably the best realization of Vegas kitsch dystopia I've seen to-date: extension cord retro-futurism with many flowing neon lights, tubular Jetson kitchen decor, hidden underground bunkers, abandoned motel Hawaiian cults, and a plethora of Las Vegas glowing signs. This era between modern sci-fi and postwar atomic scares is the sugar-coated grimy sweet spot for dystopian candylands. So many impressive artistic details that elevates the escapism and isn't just a Mad Max clone. Even when I wasn't sold on Milquetoast protagonist, I see how it all fits together, dare I say I think the movie is rather feminist?

Leans a little too heavily on typical action beats (caveat: The crane/underground tunnel sequence is fantastic), but there's enough interesting stuff here to power 3 or 4 typical genre movies. Favorite part is Tim Thomerson's surfer-haired murder-cult leader, a hilarious depiction of decadent faux-individualism cult of personality hogwash mutating into something violent and fiercely territorial. Then there's the movie's unambiguous affirmation for humanity over machine, which is almost a complete 180 from how artificial intelligence is usually treated in stories like this - learn to love your fellow humans before you start shedding tears for fictional robots, society!

I always assumed Cherry 2000 referred to Melanie Griffith’s character. Nope. Turns out Cherry is a Gynoid: a robotic domestic partner — fully functional, if you get my drift. The protagonist, Sam Treadwell, accidentally short-circuits his model during their make-out session on a wet kitchen floor. Luckily, her memory disc was salvaged. Unfortunately, to find another “2000” Gynoid he’ll have to brave the wastelands beyond his ultra-consumerist urban bubble (I didn’t catch what city it’s supposed to be: Vegas, Reno or LA), and will need Griffith’s tracker/mechanic/all-round badass character to help him.

While I've always enjoyed this as pure camp, I'm now thinking it's a lot deeper than I realized. There seem to be much more substantive themes at work than immediately meet the eye—Is this movie a prescient satire about the death of interpersonal connection in the digital age? The soulless ephemera of technological obsolescence? A constant progression into the future that leaves behind any loyalty or respect for the past? Is Lester's Sky Ranch symbolic of some kind exurban Robert Anton Wilson bougie libertarian commune run by a self-help/New Age huckster who claims he's "really trying to help you" even as he uses you to amass a warlord army? This film was ridiculous, terrible dialogues and tried too much to be as apocalyptic as the world of "Mad Max". And I really liked it a lot. Melanie Griffith was great, and the plot was so over the top that actually worked. I don't know, it was fun, you know?
Melanie Griffith as Imperator Cherry-osa whipping out a bazooka on a slew of kitsch-obsessed desert jabronis is on the highlight reel of human achievement.
Guys are out here having the personalities of somewhat friendly possums and acting like that should catch a baddie for them.

As much as I love the Mad Max movies, I also love the many Mad Max Clones that came out in the late '70s and throughout the '80s even into the early '90s equally as much.
Give me some irradiated maniacs with guns, a "lone wolf" type hero thundering across the wasteland in a supercharged muscle car blowing random shit up and whipping ass in general and I'm as happy as a pig in shit.
