Yes, Charmed fans, that really just happened. The CW drama wrapped its four-season run on Friday with a jaw-dropping, multiverse-confirming final scene that will have fans of both the reboot and the original series talking.
After reuniting Inara with her sisters and preventing another magical apocalypse, the current Charmed Ones — Mel, Maggie and Kaela — discovered a mysterious door emblazoned with their signature triquetra.
“Are we sure about this? Another world? Other Charmed Ones?” Mel asked the group. Maggie shared her sister’s skepticism, but Kaela insisted that this is where fate has led them.
So, what was on the other side of that fateful door? No big deal, just… Halliwell Manor! “This house feels oddly familiar,” Mel noted as the trio found themselves standing outside the very home where Prue, Piper, Phoebe and Paige honed their craft in the original Charmed.
“I guess we should see who lives here,” Maggie suggested, but a knock on the door revealed that no one was home. After another push from Michaela, Maggie agreed that they should enter the house, which (as fate would have it) was unlocked. “We’re stronger than we have ever been,” she said. “I know that we can handle whatever we encounter on the other side of that door.”
The episode (and series) ended with Mel, Maggie and Kaela entering Halliwell Manor and the doors magically closing behind them.
Is your mind completely blown? Ours were. Fortunately, executive producers Jeffrey Lieber and Joey Falco were happy to field our burning questions about that swing-for-the-fences final scene:
TVLINE | Was the season always going to end this way, or did you do this because you knew weren’t coming back?
FALCO | We wrote and shot this episode before we knew the show was going to end. We knew for months that there was a 50/50 chance of us getting canceled, so we wanted to end on something that could move forward but could also be a satisfying conclusion. We wanted to eventually tie these universes together. We were going to do it in a much bigger, crazier way at a certain point, but since we knew there was a chance we were getting canceled, this was the sweet spot where we felt like we got to do what we’ve always wanted to do — make it a Charmed multiverse — but also end in a way that’s hopeful and satisfying and wraps up everyone’s emotions.
TVLINE | That’s a heck of a set-up. What would you have done if the show had gotten renewed?
LIEBER | We were looking to start next season with the universes knit together, and then we would have seen [which cast members were] around and amenable. We would have, in the first five minutes of Season 5, dealt with how those universes were knit and then would have moved back into our world again. What was really important to us this season was to create something large and stable. We kept going back to what the Spider-Man franchise did. We wanted there to be one world everyone could exist in.
FALCO | We certainly had a plan for where Season 5 was going. There were going to be phone calls made about which cast members are available and who’s willing to do it. We had a very flexible plan based on [those logistics], but we never had those conversations because we weren’t going to have them until we got a pick-up. So we’ll never know who may or may not have made an appearance.
TVLINE | So no phone calls were made about getting anyone for a cameo in this final scene?
FALCO | Right. We were never going to do it in this season. It was all about launching Season 5 with that.
LIEBER | There were two separate concerns. First, this show is this show, so we wanted to end this season with these characters. Then there’s the bigger idea of the franchise, and we wanted to do honor to that. But we never wanted this season to end with anything other than these three sisters — Mel, Maggie and Michaela — and to wrap them up in some way.
TVLINE | Were you on set the day this scene was shot? It must have been a big moment.
LIEBER | Well, there’s a story there: The three of them on the porch was shot in Vancouver. Our wonderful crew built a [replica] of the porch. But when the pullback happens, that was shot in LA [at the house used for exteriors on the original Charmed]. This idea started with Joey, who suggested it as a way to end the season. We tried to get a hold of the house, but we couldn’t figure it out. We had brought on a writer named Adam Lujan towards the end of the season, and when we were talking about our frustrations, he was like, “I know the guy the landlord of that house!” Two hours later, we had access to it. It was fantastic.
FALCO | It was fate, honestly. It was kismet. It’s something we’ve really been excited to do for a long time. … Jeff and I were both there, and we have lots of pictures at the Charmed house that we’ll have to post [after the episode airs].
TVLINE | I have to ask: Was it Prue or Macy who closed the door at the end?
FALCO | That is a great question… that I think the fans can debate. I certainly have a thought, but I don’t think we should make it canon, because I feel like it’s up for debate.
LIEBER | This fanbase is hyper-specific and obsessive about everything, and we get a lot of questions online about what the truth of things are. And we’re about to enter a period where there are a bunch of questions that probably won’t have answers. To that, we say, “You guys answer it!” Somewhere down the line this thing’s going to be picked up by somebody and they will move forward, and all I can hope we did is leave behind a cohesive universe that someone can take and [work] with. That’s what this last season was about, putting everything in the same place.
TVLINE | I’m bummed we won’t get to see that happen, but even the idea of it feels somehow satisfying.
FALCO | And even though this show has ended, these ladies’ journey doesn’t end. They’re still fighting. We weren’t going to end with them sitting around a table reading stories to their grandkids like the original show did. The battle continues, which is where we want to leave the audience. They’re still out there fighting.
We’ll have more Charmed finale coverage coming this weekend, including more about what fans would have seen in Season 5. For now, grade the finale in our poll below, then drop a comment with your thoughts on that ending.
The season four finale was lackluster. It’s weird how Joey and Jeff want to connect OG and new Charmed given how much disrespect there has been between the actresses. We have all seen the drama the play out. Glad this show has ended
The season was definitely lackluster, if they were gonna go all multi-verse then Kayla should have been a charmed one from a different world. They could have set up a really interesting season mystery with her or something.
I like season 4 of Charm. The ending could lend you believe there a possiabity there could be more.
If no TV serious maybe make movies or short mini series. Maybe bring the original Charm ones back as relatives.
Continue the serious some how, please.
When the name of the series is Charmed why do you keep calling it “Charm”? I mean, it’s right there for you to see the correct spelling. Show a little respect.
Grammar police at work..maybe English is not their mother tongue
I agree with pat benefits.
considering the hostile issues between the two shows it is very unlikely that any of the OG charmed ones would agree to do the show. Even now with the show ended the fighting is still going the ending is a little surprising and confusing since the reboot has made the premise and even the mythology of the show different that is would tie back to them seemed very odd.
This was a last ditch ratings ploy by Jeff Lieber and Joey Falco to try to give the reboot PR hype. They refuse to let this show stand on it’s own and be it’s own great thing, which is what helped the show get cancelled
What utter nonsense. This show has been awful it’s whole run, never gave fans of the original any proper connection, then in the last scene they want to combine universes?! It’s like see, we had four years to make some connection to the original but we’ll just tease it since we’re cancelled now 🤣
they had the melinda warren connection from the pilot… so they were trying but also doing their own thing.
Haven’t seen the finale yet…was too curious but I think this could be their attempt at getting a renewal. CW gave all of their shows a notice.
the multiverse was there since 1×1 when Marisol made that spell, is not anyones problem you dont watch properly this show
Yeah, this show was trash. From the start they killed a demon with a cell phone mirror app! WTF! Everything felt rushed from the Storyline to the demon slaying. It was like watching millennial trash tv with no real depth. They could have done so much with this from the start, but it was lazy writing and so much more. Then to capitalize on the original?! Yuck, poor judgement on their part. The original had depth and stories with plots and demons that sometimes took all season to vanquish. It took the original Charmed ones years to develop their experience and powers, not overnight like this show seemed to do! Instant gratification, and impatience. Just the way the Source was written and handled, what!? Everything is way to easy with this show. And I hate how they “use” half the original storyline then switch it up part way through, when ever they feel like it. It makes no sense! Wow make up your mind, pick to follow or make it your own. Very poor quality. I don’t think it was the acting either.
Sad that this series is over. The ending definitely brought back some great memories of the OG charmed.
Guess we just have to wonder what would or could have happened. 😞
I really liked the last two seasons, they were good, and I loved the ending
I was a fan of the original Charmed. I tried to get into the reboot, but couldn’t. I gave it about the first half of the first season. So, I can’t really comment on the ending. I do think it’s cool that they were trying to honor the original with the ending. But, shouldn’t the question about who closed the door have been whether it was Paige or Macy who closed the door since Prue died during the original series and when it ended Paige was the one who had the telekinetic power? Of course, it’s been long enough that it could have been Wyatt or Chris or maybe even Paige or Phoebe’s kids. But, I wouldn’t think Prue would have been an option in that question since she died in the original show.
”SPOILER” but Macy died too in the season 3 finale.
Well then, it seems the writers should have had a much different response to that question. :)
Not at all. The question as asked is because TVLine wanted to know if it was one of the spirits of the passed Charmed ones that did it, and if so was it Prue or Macy.
Prue would have cursed these impostor and trapped them in with the Hollow. So I say it wad Prue!
YES!!!!
By this point, Prue could have come back to hang with her family plenty of times, just like Patty and Grams. The OG show explained why she didn’t come back sooner.
True. But, the question just sounded to me like it was someone who was still a character. I didn’t see it though. But, actually, now that I think of it, the article did say it appeared no one was home. So, perhaps ghost is the best option. :)
AGREED MY SENTIMENTS EXACTLY.
It could also be their grandmother or any of the other kids we know they had, since one assumes this show isn’t set in 2006
The door being closed is from the original series but like the book it sometimes closes and opens on it own assuming it was Prue from the other side doing. I don’t see why it would be Macy since she would be in a different world therefore her after life would be part of that world
I’m satisfied with the finale, but is little bit frustrating that show got cancelled right when it was getting interesting. As fan of both shows I would love to see how would these universes connect in season 5. Even though I doubt they would ever get any OG actress to appear since they clearly hate the show.
I think if the show would have been picked up for season 5 a couple of them would have come back. Alyssa has been open to it. Rose said she would never do it and I think Holly would have depending on the story line.
Unfortunately, we will never know (and that’s the sad part). All the OG fans would have definitely tuned in for that episode!
Holly has been against the CW Charmed for various of reasons
Mostly because the newer version is capitalizing on the OG. They should have brought in OG characters a lot sooner out of respect. Intermittent references to OG characters and situations could have easily helped propel newer series to a couple more seasons.
Even OG Charmed fizzled in some episodes.
Good news to know if there is any kind or reboot or movie to close things out that whiny Rose won’t be involved. No one will miss her. She had a great job with Charmed but has done nothing but trash it since she got “woke”.
The biggest problem is the INCREDIBLE DISGUSTING AND DISRESPECTFUL SIN that this new Charmed has in it and yes I’m talkin about the homo crap. And especially CW beIN a huge traitor of the country and world especially God in not only allowing such behavior but supportin it. I also don’t like all the Spanish crap. As for the show no it’s disrespect at payin no hommage to the original yes original not og that’s also disrespectful to all cast and both shows using a gang banger thug delinquent term. Also allowing that black lives matter crap be involved which is truly RACIST to ALL other races but black. ALL LIVES MATTER not one matters more than the other. I love alot of shows on cw but they do a major injustice cancelling great shows and continuing truly wasteful tasteless shows. Get rid of the homo crap and disrespect. Grow up.
God doesn’t exist you racist, homophobe. And even if he did, you wouldn’t go to his heaven cause you’ll be nice and toasty in hell. Useless points to bring up talking about “homo crap” “Black lives matter crap” and “Spanish.” What a ridiculous, disrespectful and hateful comment.
From the sound of it, you are a hypochristian. Best change religions. You are utterly failing at the one you’ve picked.
They’d maybe get Leo
The ultimate slap in the face. The three cheap #Charmed ones “visiting” the Halliwell Manor, not even being invited but GETTING IN without any permission. Just like they did for 4 years with this crappy discount show. IT’S FINALLY OVER. NOW GO BACK WHERE YOU BELONG.
FINALLY FREE
Free from what?
Free from existing in a world with a show you don’t like?
Free from reading articles about a show you don’t like?
Free from posting comments about a show you don’t like?
.
Umm, congrats?
Free from impostors using the show name for profit with a cheap knock off.
I’m a huge fan of the original but there’s a thousand nods and references to the original all throughout the new one. I understand the actresses are upset but it’s their fault they decided to get offended instead of taking it as a compliment someone decided to do something with it in general. The new one has its flaws but the original also had its own problems. Idk why your spreading so much hate.
The OG actresses wanted to do a reunion movie. All of them said they would do it then instead CBS announced a reboot with no ties to the original cause it’s cheaper and the OG stars were getting too old.
So yeah I’d be offended too.
If a man came to live in your houseand make love with your wife, would you consider it a compliment?
Take your chill pills, the show wasn’t bad
Take YOUR chill pills and let people voice their opinions that – surprise! – might differ from yours!
I enjoyed the finale, but had to shake my head at how quickly Inara sacrificed herself – that was convenient.
.
If all the stars aligned, I would have loved for them to have been joined by Abigail to save the magical realm – everything is better with Poppy Drayton! – but I’m still satisfied. As finales for canceled series go, this was better than most.
Enjoyed final.they need to bring season 5 on.so many possibilities.would have loved seeing halliwell family in the house.watched allepisodes of both families and very much enjoyed them.now bring the old and new together as the halliwells went back in time so can the new charmed carry on.could be lifelong show.why can’t some shows carry on .their all being cancelled.please keep it going.anything can happen.if you watched both shows why criticise them.loved all cast in both.
I watched the original charmed And recognize the house immediately as far as the door I think the house closed the door
I laugh when people get so angry over a show they hate. Lmao
Why do u waste ur time on something like that?
Weirdo behavior.
I’d suggest that anyone who watched the original show would recognize the house immediately. Don’t tout your detective skills just yet.
I stopped watching it after the news of the cancellation. Honestly, they could never figure out what the direction of this series was supposed to be. Each season felt like its on separate reboot/anthology.
.
Even the OG series had a difficult time finding it’s direction after Shannen Doherty left the series…but, they managed to do so and had 5 more seasons afterwards.
Yes I agree, very scattered.
If they got that season 5 I don’t think any of the og charmed ones would come back for that 5 min cameo they were hoping to do. Weren’t the og ones against the reboot like talking smack on Twitter?
Holly has been the most vocal being against the reboot, her and the actress that played Maggie got into on social media back during season 1.
Connecting the universes after 4 years of record flop ratings and 4 years of disrespectful snobby behavior. This show sucked till the very end. If they had not been full of egotistical pride like Jennie Urman and Melonie Diaz then maybe this could have been done since season 1 and paid respect to the women who created this franchise. What a wasted opportunity to truly make something great. Good riddance to bad rubbish. It’s fitting the show ended with being forced to acknowledge the only interesting thing about it – it’s original series.
Btw I don’t believe for one second any of these frauds were ever going to reach out to The OG actresses because that s1 Melinda Warren tease went nowhere. They’re just baiting fans because they bombed every year they were on retconning their own lore the next season. Sayonara frauds!
Yes, Totally agree! I had wanted to stop watching after the very first episode. I kept watching hoping it would get better. It was like watching a car accident ( you cant seem to look away) they seemed to bait you each time with a little nod to the original series. I skipped the entire 2nd and 3rd season. But it is ” Good riddance to bad rubbish”
Why cancel the show, fans would like to see what happens next. Get another network to pick it up.
Because the CW cancelled like 9 shows since its for sale.
And no one from the original series was going to come back for this. Holly, Alyssa and Rose have all been very public about their distaste for this series.
sounds like a lot of people sat through 70+ episodes of a show they didn’t like very much. weird. lol…
Sounds like those people weren’t a lot.
I sat through those episodes in the hope that finally THIS one would be the one to tie it together with the original with a good storyline…
I was sadly disappointed,…
Bring it back dang dummit
I’m a fan of the old charmed !lways have been always will be.. I tried watching the reboot but sorry I just couldn’t get into it.. for me there was 2 much lime the og charmed.. I’m sorry but I’m glad they got canceled.. and I don’t for one minute believe that they could have gotten anyone from out charmed on a season 5 sorry not sorry
I agree with everything you said. It was too stupid this reboot.
The fact that they even made it to four seasons is a miracle… good riddance! #OGCharmed4Ever xo
They shouldn’t have cancelled it
It’s a great show!!!
I never watched the reboot after the third episode season 1 bc it was BS they didn’t even try to explain how these Latin ladies became charmed and are not apart of the Halliwell line. The reboot was stupid and should have never been done. If you were going to do it they should have started w Pue’s son.
Prue didn’t have kids
There wan no guarantee in the Original series that “The Charmed Ones” had to be from the “Halliwell” family line. As explained in the Reboot there have always been Charmed Ones down through the Millenia and came from a different family each time. Being The Charmed Ones is not hereditary. In the Original Series at the end – there were no reason’s to need Charmed Ones anymore – they Eliminated the Source of All Evil Once and for all.
That was a good show it should not cancel
I do not care what most people think! I enjoyed the show from beginning to end. Although I love the original, I love the reboot even better. The reboot added a lot more nuance to the storytelling. People had problems with this show from the beginning because the leads were women of color. Folks just needed to be honest and admit.
This!
This. Is. Dumb!
I’m so sick and tired of being called racist by new fans because I didn’t like the reboot. I’m even more sick of it because I hate the show for the disrespect it has shown to the original since day 1! I would’ve hated the show no matter the skin color of the ladies.
I guess a hit dog will holler! So basically you hated these women of color did not kiss the but of the original creators of the show.
Because fans of the new show have no way to defend this series without calling OG fans racist for criticizing the show. Get off your high horse. There are ways to honor the original series, this is not it.
No you loon, people had a problem because they took the property that was made great by the lead actresses and cut them out while profiting from their legacy and openly disrespect them. Imagine something taking your life’s work and claiming it’s theirs now and you don’t matter cause you’re old, and when you complain they just call you racist.
Thank you! There are valid reasons we don’t like this series but fans of the new series jump straight to “You don’t like it cause you’re a racist” 🙄
Don’t cancel!! Mix them! I’ve watched charmed for years and over and over tie them together awesome show!!!
I am a fan of the original Charmed. I did watch the reboot for awhile. I tried to get into it, but couldn’t. It was actually boring to me. I was actually disappointed in the reboot. Their chemistry as sisters just wasn’t there for one thing. As far as a reboot goes, to me it wasn’t one. It had nothing to do with the original Charmed. That was very disappointing.
But this is the problem: people looking at Charmed (2018), which was announced as a reboot, expected continuity from Charmed (OG) ???
.
Why? You set yourself up for disappointment.
.
WIkipedia definition of Reboot:
In serial fiction, the term “reboot” signifies a new start to an established fictional universe, work, or series. A reboot discards continuity to re-create its characters, plotlines and backstory from the beginning.
.
Anyone looking at the reboot expecting to see anything from the OG Charmed really only have themselves to blame…
.
This idea that the original of ANYTHING must be honored and upheld as the only way to tell that story is so shortsighted. The BSG reboot? The Flash reboot? One Day at a Time reboot? All were better than the original.
.
I haven’t seen OG Charmed, and can’t compare, and even those who can compare could say OG might have been better, but as a standalone revival, it exposed new fans to the story of the Charmed Ones, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m even thinking of watching the OG Charmed now, and would never have thought to do that if not for this revival…
Uugh! My bad: my last word should be “reboot”, not “revival” …. !!!!
The issue with the reboot is that the Charmed universe had plenty of material to do a revival/spin off. It is one of those shows that shouldn’t have been rebooted in the first place. Some shows (Walker, BSG, Babylon 5, etc.) are shows that are good/were good for reboots. The finite story was told and if you want to spend more time in that sandbox, the best way to do it is to reboot it. Other shows – Charmed being one – Stargate, Star Trek, etc. are shows that there is PLENTY of in universe material that a reboot is unnecessary. There’s enough source material there to simply just continue on.
Exactly!!! I think they could have done a “Charmed Sons” or focus on one of the other children keeping it in the same universe.
.
I did like this reboot for what it was but, what I said on an earlier post, they clearly didn’t have a direction for this series cause each season they were rebooting its on reboot.
I’d vote for a spinoff called SHIRTLESS 20 – 30-SOMETHING MALE CHARMED WITCHES…
Drew Fuller
Lots of the hot shirtless male models who appeared on the series including homophobic Eduardo Verastegui who supported marriage bans for lgbtq+ community after it was disclosed that he “may” have dated Ricky Martin before going full on conservative.
To which I would add to your list of shows that NEEDS to be restarted: FIREFLY!!!!
How many other shows are you aware of that has SO many fans, and gets more fans as the years go by, that had only one season???
Answer: Extremely few, if any…
Sorry about this not being Charmed focused, but I truly felt that you missed a big show on your list of examples when you brought Star Trek and Stargate in as examples but didn’t say a word about Firefly…
One day you will visit your family and they will have been “rebooted”, swapped with other people who will claim to be your family but will be strangers to you. It’s just the same, but better! More diverse! If you want your original family back you’re racist and “shortsighted”.
It has a name, and it’s Alzheimer’s…
It never found it’s own voice, but it sounds like it had closure despite cancellation, maybe I’ll give it a chance on streaming
That’s how it ended? After years of them bitching about the OG show and how theirs was more original and more feminist? It seems a little too late when that’s all the OG fans wanted, some acknowledgement of the original and the OG Charmed ones.
At first I didn’t think this show would be as good as the first, but it was different enough to be almost as good as the first. I would have liked to have seen them come together and have a show with both sets of Charmed Ones in it. I think this finale could be a starting of a new show with both sets of Charmed Ones in it, as many crossovers as there are nowadays, but I think this could be good. I was sorry to see the first show go and I’m sorry to see this show go.
