Princess Charlotte of Cambridge was born on May 2, 2015, in London, at the ‘Lindo Wing’ of ‘St Mary’s Hospital.’ Charlotte was born healthy, weighing eight pounds and three ounces.

Princess Charlotte is the second child of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. She has an older brother named Prince George and a younger brother named Prince Louis.

She was named Charlotte Elizabeth Diana by her parents. ‘Charlotte’ is regarded as the feminine form of her grandfather’s name ‘Charles.’ Charlotte is also the middle name of Catherine’s younger sister Pippa Middleton. Her first middle name, Elizabeth, was chosen in honor of Queen Elizabeth II. Her second middle name, Diana, was chosen in honor of her late paternal grandmother Diana, Princess of Wales.

Her birth was followed by grand celebrations in London. She received gifts from all over the world, including a Tasmanian merino wool blanket by the then Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott. She also received a pink dress that read ‘From Israel with Love.’ The dress was sent to her by the President of Israel Reuven Rivlin.

The entire city of London sported hues of pink on the day Princess Charlotte was born. On May 3, famous monuments, such as the ‘London Eye,’ ‘Tower Bridge,’ and ‘Trafalgar Square’ were illuminated with pink-colored lights to celebrate the arrival of the newest member of the royal family.

On May 4, the birth of Princess Charlotte was celebrated with gun salutes at the ‘Tower of London’ and ‘Hyde Park.’ The princess was first seen in public while leaving ‘St Mary’s Hospital’ for her residence ‘Kensington Palace’ in London.

Shortly after her birth, Princess Charlotte and her family left the palace to spend time at the family’s country home, ‘Anmer Hall.’ The princess was baptized at ‘St. Mary Magdalene Church’ in Sandringham, Norfolk, England. The Archbishop of Canterbury baptized her as per the Catholic ritual.

Incidentally, ‘St. Mary Magdalene Church’ was where the princess’ late grandmother Princess Diana was christened.

Princess Charlotte wore a royal gown that looked similar to the gown worn by Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter, Victoria in 1841. The Duke and the Duchess invited the public to be a part of their special day.

A statement was released by the ‘Kensington Palace’ to invite common people for Charlotte’s baptism. It read- ‘The Duke and Duchess are hugely grateful for the warm wishes they have received since Princess Charlotte’s birth—many of them from local people in Norfolk—and are delighted the paddock can be opened on the day of the christening.’

Five people were chosen to be her godparents. They are – Adam Middleton, The Honorable Laura Pettman, Thomas van Straubenzee, Sophie Carter, and James Meade. Princess made her first official public appearance on June 11, 2016, on the balcony of ‘Buckingham Palace’ during a ceremony called ‘Trooping the Colour.’ She started attending ‘Willcocks Nursery School’ in January 2018.

Career

Princess Charlotte became a style icon at a young age. Despite her parents’ efforts to shield her from the paparazzi, the media finds a way to catch glimpses of the princess every now and then.

She accompanied her parents on their royal trip to Canada in September 2016. She also accompanied her parents to Poland and Germany in July 2017.

Charlotte is styled as ‘Her Royal Highness Princess.’ As per the letters patent issued by Queen Elizabeth II, the title and style is given to the children of the Prince of Wales’ older son. Charlotte is also fourth in the line of succession.

As per a UK legislation that came into effect in 2015, male and female heirs of the royal family will have equal rights to the British throne. Hence Charlotte remains fourth in the line of succession despite the birth of a younger brother, Prince Louis.

Since the law pertaining to equal rights to the British throne came into effect in 2015, Princess Charlotte became the first female in the United Kingdom to exercise the right. According to traditionalists, the law could make Charlotte the second most powerful female in England, after the reigning queen Elizabeth II.

Her younger brother is fifth in line of succession to the British throne. Her uncle Prince Harry is sixth in the line of succession.

In 2018, a heart-warming photo of Princess Charlotte and her younger brother Prince Louis went viral on social media. In the photo, Charlotte was seen holding her brother with affection.

Princess Charlotte was also seen in the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The wedding took place on May 19, 2018, at ‘St George’s Chapel’ in London. At the wedding, Princess Charlotte wore an ivory dress designed by ‘Givenchy.’ Her shoes were designed by Meghan Markle’s shoe designer ‘Aquazurra.’
