Heroine Overview

When people try to kill me, I don't hop in bed with them a tick later. I just kick their ass. I'm funny like that.
~ Catwoman
We are not in control. Every now and then life likes to reiterate that little point. Some people find such reminders disconcerting. They spend their lives in breathless pursuit of meaningless goals, hoping to forget everything they know about their own mortality. Some people anchor themselves to something larger. Religion, Art, Justice. Anything they deem significant in a life that's not. We are not in control. If we were, surely we'd know better than to care about anything.
~ Catwoman
Everyone feels that way. Everyone not from there. They just see Gotham as a flood of chaos. And now it's neat and clean. So what if people die? What if villains ruin their live? What if they're all slaves kept in fear? None of it matters. Let Gotham rot...as long as it rots quietly. No one gives a damn.
~ Catwoman

Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman, is a major character and an anti-heroine in the DC Universe. She often serves as the main love interest and an on-and-off ally of Batman.

Although typically thought and reproduced as a villain, Catwoman repeatedly in a heroic capacity, and, in the most modern comics, is a hero as often as a villain, and even when a villain shows consistent moral standards and far more restrictions and scruples than any of Batman's other great enemies. Since Selina Kyle's origins are obscure, she can also be portrayed as based in Gotham's red-light district, implying a history of prostitution.

She spent most of her life training herself to be a professional thief, stealing only high-level targets instead of petty assaults. Because of his more or less harmless methods, Batman allows her to slip through the roots. Catwoman would become an on-and-off ally of the Dark Knight, and later his love interest. She also became a member of the Birds of Prey, the Outsiders, and later the Justice League of America.

She was created by the late Bill Finger and the late Bob Kane, and she first appeared in Batman #1 in spring of 1940.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Selina Kyle is the daughter of Brian and Maria Kyle, and the older sister to Maggie Kyle, and her childhood was defined by tragedy. Maria later committed suicide and Brian was abusive, and later drank himself to death soon after. Selina was separated from Maggie when she was sent to the Sprang Hall Juvenile Detention Center, which was an abusive state home for orphans and delinquents.

She eventually escaped from the center and joined a carnival circus group outside of Gotham City, and learned contortionism, acrobatics, magic, and trickery and improved her pickpocketing skills. When the carnival owner died in a tragic accident, Selina decided to go to the streets of Gotham and become a thief.

Becoming Catwoman[]

Becoming a petty thief, Selina found herself working as a prostitute in the East End to get by and watched over Holly Robinson, an underage girl. After being viciously beaten by a pimp named Stan, she passed near the Immaculate Virgin Mission and was sent to the hospital. Detective George Flannery visited her and told her of Ted Grant, a man who could teach her to fight and defend herself. While training, Selina met Bruce Wayne when walking through the East End with Holly, and rejected her advances.

Stan began to berate Holly, causing Bruce to attack the pimp before Selina was knocked out when trying to protect Holly. Later on, Selina returned to Ted, and asked him to train her in the use of a bullwhip.

One night, Selina was woken up by the news that Batman was being corned by police, and went to Robinson Park with Holly to see for themselves. Seeing Batman in action gave Selina an idea to become a creature of the night like him, and returned to Stan to beat him up. She declared that she was going to change her line of work, and decided to become a cat burglar named Catwoman to rob others. Her first heist was robbing local mob boss Carmine Falcone, and decided to claw the face of her victims to leave her mark.

Selina would later defeat Stan after he kidnapped Maggie, whom she reunited with when returning to the nunnery to saved her. Sometime later, Holly was beaten by Ethan Strunk, a corrupt police officer, and Batman stopped her. Batman attempted to convince Catwoman to let the justice system deal with Strunk, but Catwoman believed that Gotham was too corrupt. After escaping Batman, Selina left Holly with Maggie to be protected.

Due to the Zero Hour story, which caused a distortion of the time stream, Selina's history as a prostitute was erased and replaced with the continuation of her as a petty thief.

Perfect. What little girl doesn't dream of being bait for her strapping Dark Knight?
~ Catwoman

Catwoman doesn't appear in the video game, Batman: Arkham Asylum, but she has an unlocked profile after you solve a puzzle that revolves around her. The profile states: Orphan who learned to survive on the streets of Gotham City, Selina Kyle took the robbery to survive ... but determined to do it in style, she learned sexual arts and trained extensively to perfect her cat theft skills. 'Her criminal activities are often tempered by a reluctant altruism, making her a fickle villain and an occasional heroine. 'She regularly escapes capture by the Dark Knight and maintains a complicated and contradictory relationship with Batman, who often becomes flirtatious and, occasionally, legitimately romantic.

However, in the second game, Batman: Arkham City, she is a playable character and has her own story in the game after downloading it. Afterwards, she became a major character for the Batman Arkham series. She is voiced by Gray DeLisle.

She suspects Carmine was her father, and is given confirmation as his dying delirium makes him confuse her for her mother, Louisa, which also edifies her about her unknown mother's name.

Abilities[]

  • Expert thief and steath: Catwoman is one of the most steathy and skilled thief in the universe. She can steal the most densely-guarded jeweleries or valuable objects with ease. As a matter of fact, hardly can guards or even Batman can catch up with her.
  • Master combatant and weapon user: Catwoman was trained by the Armless Master in martial arts and by Wildcat in boxing and street-fighting. She is a dangerous, clever and resourceful fighter, known for precise, agile attacks and speedy getaways. Her formidable hand-to-hand combat skills are augmented by her cat-like speed, agility, reflexes, balance, and flexibility. Catwoman can use various kinds of weapons, from whip to firearms
  • Master acrobat: Catwoman is skilled in acrobatics. She was trained to be adapted to her cat-like fighting style: flexible and dangerous. She can easily flip, roll or leap through buildings to buildings, escape a group of men. Acrobatics helps her a lot in battle, making her more agile, dangerous and adaptable to many situations.
  • Master disguise: Catwoman is a master of disguise. She can either turn into a nerdy-looking scientist to an attractive bartender or a foxy star on the red carpet. Thanks to this ability, Catwoman is almost unrecognisable in a certain location and she can hide and accomplish any goals without being seen.
  • Feline empathy: Catwoman has a strong affinity for cats. Feline species tend to flock to her, accepting her almost immediately, recognizing somehow that she is not an enemy but a friend. This allows her to calm injured cats, train them, befriend them, and form strong bonds with them. These animals will even sometimes come to her defense when she is attacked. This has proved most beneficial, especially when it has involved big cats.
  • Seduction and flirting skills: Being a cunning and intelligent women, Catwoman always has the solution to manipulate her victim using her seduction and flirting skills. By showing her curvy and toned body and speaking attractively, she can manipulate a man easily and cause them having sexual interactions with her, then she will use him on her own purpose. She knows many flirting skills, using them in the suitable situation. She killed her childhood friend's killer by undressing her shirt then approach him. When she stayed at a penhouse and Batman approached her, she rushed into him and undress both of them

Trivia[]

  • Ranked 20th on IGN's "Top 100 Comic Book Heroes of All Time" list.
  • Ranked 11th on IGN's "Top 100 Comic Book Villains of All Time" list.
  • Ranked 51st on Wizard magazine's "100 Greatest Villains of All Time" list.
  • Ranked 23rd in Comics Buyer's Guide's "100 Sexiest Women in Comics" list.
  • Catwoman's alias, Irena Dubrovna, was inspired by the main character of the 1942 film, Cat People.
  • Apparently the catsuit Selina wears as Catwoman (or at least one version of it) is actually a modified version of one she wore during her days as a prostitute - though this is exclusive to Frank Miller's Batman stories, as most iterations she is merely a cat burglar from the start (or in the case of Batman Returns, she makes it out furniture leather), albeit this prostitution angle does sometimes reappear in other versions of the character.
  • Selina Kyle is bisexual, something which had been suspected in the comics for a long time. However, this fact wasn’t confirmed until the Post-Flashpoint continuity.
