Sitting in a posh hotel suite in Pasadena, Calif., James D'Arcy, British star of the A&E Network serial-killer drama "Those Who Kill," premiering Monday, March 3, recalls taking the first-time plunge into an open-ended TV series.
"The nature of television is you have a vague idea of where you're going, but that can change," he tells Zap2it. "It's the first time I've done something where I don't know what the end was when I accepted the role. It's the first time I've done anything where I didn't read all the scripts."
"That's always challenging for me as well," says his co-star, Chloe Sevigny, who's done film, stage and TV series ("Big Love," "Hit & Miss," "American Horror Story: Asylum"). "You don't have any control."
Luckily, both are doing a show with a TV veteran at the helm. Glen Morgan ("Wiseguy," "The X-Files," "Millennium," "Bionic Woman") adapted it from the Danish...

In a TV landscape already saturated with cop series and crime shows, can Those Who Kill make its mark? Its first positive distinguishing factor is its setting -- the show takes place, and is filmed, in Pittsburgh, which is a refreshing change of scenery. The other is that the personal history of newly minted homicide detective Catherine Jensen (Chloe Sevigny) -- a history which drives her dogged pursuit of criminals -- is one that is still very much present, alive, and shrouded in mystery, though not secrecy. Hit the jump for more on what makes Those Who Kill (based on a Danish series of the same name) a promising new show. Those Who Kill starts off unexpectedly, with Jensen seen staking out, and then breaking into, the home of a sleeping older couple. She watches them with a murderous gaze. As she exits, she steals a framed photo off of the wall.

You might think A&E's new cop drama "Those Who Kill" is another in a long line of crime procedurals. You would absolutely be wrong, though. While it might give off that vibe early on, it is clear that what the show is really about two very different people trying to find some sort of middle ground in an effort in order to solve some pretty horrific murders ... and that's before delving into their personal histories.
Chloe Sevigny's Catherine Jensen is a homicide detective who is willing to break the rules if that's what it takes to solve the mystery. She lets herself get too close and has a borderline obsessive and unhealthy relationship with her cases.
Luckily, she brings a forensic psychologist on board who has that same sort of obsession, though in a different way. Thomas Shaeffer (James D'Arcy) puts himself in the mind of the killer,...

"I'm terrified," says Chloë Sevigny between takes on the Pittsburgh set of her new thriller, Those Who Kill. She's not scared by the scene she's shooting, in which her character, homicide detective Catherine Jensen, chats with a coroner (Kerry O'Malley) over a grotesquely desiccated corpse in the morgue. Sevigny is vocalizing her deepest fear: "What if I get stuck on a crappy cop show?"

In A&E's new drama "Those Who Kill," Chloe Sevigny's homicide detective Catherine Jensen is a different breed of leading lady. More in line with "Hannibal's" Will Graham or "The Following's" Ryan Hardy, Catherine is deeply troubled and has a mentality that she needs to be worse than the perpetrators she hunts down.
"I think she's morally ambiguous, which is interesting," Sevingy tells Zap2it at the "Those Who Kill" series premiere red carpet. "I think we have so many male characters on television who are like that these days, it's nice to have a female like that."
Because of that, Catherine becomes a somewhat unreliable narrator. She believes her step-father Howard Burgess, played by Bruce Davison, is responsible for the disappearance of her brother, though whether that's the case has yet to be determined. Even Davison doesn't know how much viewers can trust Catherine.

It feels as though 2014 is quickly shaping up to be the year of the damaged detective on television.
It's fitting that Those Who Kill, A&E's gripping new drama series starring Chloe Sevigny and James D'Arcy, premieres the same week that HBO's True Detective will wrap up its inaugural season. Both shows follow law-enforcement officials who are haunted by the demons of their work — in Sevigny's case, recently promoted homicide detective Catherine Jensen. But while Catherine will draw inevitable comparisons to other tortured investigators, Sevigny's portrayal — like Matthew McConaughey's excellent outing as Rust Cohle in True Detective — infuses the character with a level of nuance that's rarely seen in standard detective fare.

A&E's "Those Who Kill" will be the latest Scandinavian crime drama remake to turn up on U.S. screens on March 3rd, following "The Killing" and "The Bridge." It stars Chloë Sevigny and James D'Arcy as homicide detective Catherine Jensen and forensic psychologist Thomas Schaeffer, who track down, you know, people who kill. The series comes from executive producer Glen Morgan ("The X-Files"), who accompanied the two leads to the TCA press tour alongside fellow executive producer Brian Grazer. What became clear during the panel for the series is that, amongst critics, at least, the dark series is going to have to battle a lot of serial killer fatigue. Asked about the familiarity of the premise of investigators who get inside the mind of killers and have their own scary side, Morgan (who worked on "Millennium," with just such a set-up), said "we did that a little bit and...

Playing a police detective who tracks down serial killers on A&E Network‘s dark new drama series Those Who Kill could be draining, star Chloe Sevigny said — but not nearly as draining as guesting on The Mindy Project. ”I did Mindy and went home and cried,” she told TV critics at the TCA Winter TV Press Tour today, because she thought she’d done terribly on it. At the end of each work day on Those Who Kill, however, she went home and thought she’d done alright. Doing HBO’s polygamist drama Big Love was also trying, she said, because “everybody was yelling at her all day because everybody thought I was the bad guy.” Related: TV Teaser: A&E’s ‘Those Who Kill’ Those Who Kill is based on a popular Danish crime series format inspired by the bestselling work of author Elsebeth Egholm. "Is she a bad cop? I don't know," Sevigny told the Guide. "She's definitely taking advantage of her position."

A&E is continuing its pursuit of serial killers by picking up new drama Those Who Kill. The series, starring Chloe Sevigny (American Horror Story) and James D’Arcy (Hitchcock, Cloud Atlas), got a ten episode order, and is scheduled for a 2014 release, with production beginning in the fall.
A&E’s Prez Bob DeBitetto described the show: “Those Who Kill is not a crime procedural about serial killers – it’s a deep serialized character portrait of two compelling yet damaged individuals coming together through the revelation of their dark past.”
The pilot was written by Glen Morgan, and directed by Joe Carnahan (Narc, The A-team). It’s based on a Danish crime series format that came from the bestselling author Elsebeth Egholm. Here’s the plot rundown:

The network ordered 10 one-hour episodes of the scripted drama, starring Chloë Sevigny and James D'Arcy.
A&E's "Those Who Kill" is based on a popular Danish crime drama, which was inspired by the work of Elsebeth Egholm. She's driven by the fact that she suspects her own stepfather might be a serial killer and her brother went missing when he was 16. She enlists the help of forensic psychiatrist Thomas Schaffer (D'Arcy) to help her get into the minds of serial killers, but she's also dragging him into her personal investigation.

The A&E network is gearing up for the release of Those to Kill and now actress Chloë Sevigny has signed on to help lead the cast. So far, there’s nothing not to like about this upcoming American series.
Those to Kill will be based upon the Danish crime series of the same name. Well, in Danish, it’s called Den som dræber. Don’t forget that adapting a Danish series has worked for A&E already. Their hit, The Killing, ran for two critically applauded seasons in the States and was based on Denmark’s series, Forbrydelsen, which translates more closely to “the crime”.
The Danish Those to Kill show was inspired by the crime novels of Danish author, Elsebeth Egholm. There are at least ten books, so let’s hope our upcoming version of Those to Kill lasts more than just two seasons.
