The uproarious, bestselling true story of the world's most sought-after con man, immortalized by Leonardo DiCaprio in DreamWorks' feature film of the same name, from the author of Scam Me If You Can

Frank W. Abagnale, alias Frank Williams, Robert Conrad, Frank Adams, and Robert Monjo, was one of the most daring con men, forgers, imposters, and escape artists in history. In his brief but notorious criminal career, Abagnale donned a pilot's uniform and copiloted a Pan Am jet, masqueraded as the supervising resident of a hospital, practiced law without a license, passed himself off as a college sociology professor, and cashed over $2.5 million in forged checks, all before he was twenty-one.

Known by the police of twenty-six foreign countries and all fifty states as "The Skywayman," Abagnale lived a sumptuous life on the lam—until the law caught up with him. Now recognized as the nation's leading authority on financial foul play, Abagnale is a charming rogue whose hilarious, stranger-than-fiction international escapades, and ingenious escapes-including one from an airplane-make

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

When this true-crime story first appeared in 1980, it made the New York Times bestseller list within weeks. Two decades later, it's being rereleased in conjunction with a film version produced by DreamWorks. In the space of five years, Frank Abagnale passed $2.5 million in fraudulent checks in every state and 26 foreign countries. He did it by pioneering implausible and brazen scams, such as impersonating a Pan Am pilot (puddle jumping around the world in the cockpit, even taking over the controls). He also played the role of a pediatrician and faked his way into the position of temporary resident supervisor at a hospital in Georgia. Posing as a lawyer, he conned his way into a position in a state attorney general's office, and he taught a semester of college-level sociology with a purloined degree from Columbia University.

The kicker is, he was actually a teenage high school dropout. Now an authority on counterfeiting and secure documents, Abagnale tells of his years of impersonations, swindles, and felonies with humor and the kind of confidence that enabled him to pull off his poseur performances. "Modesty is not one of my virtues. At the time, virtue was not one of my virtues," he writes. In fact, he did it all for his overactive libido--he needed money and status to woo the girls. He also loved a challenge and the ego boost that came with playing important men. What's not disclosed in this highly engaging tale is that Abagnale was released from prison after five years on the condition that he help the government write fraud-prevention programs. So, if you're planning to pick up some tips from this highly detailed manifesto on paperhanging, be warned: this master has already foiled you. --Lesley Reed

My copy of this book is through Audible books version. Let me first say that the narration was very well done and with a good pace. I quickly found myself wanting to get back to the story while driving or taking walks. I was familiar with the story line because of the movie, which I always say is perhaps the only DiCaprio movie that I really enjoyed his acting. The book has little to say about the FBI agent assigned to catch him and ended w/o reference to his post-criminal career. In fact, it ends with yet another of his clever means of evading capture.

As far as whether all that he wrote, or had written for him, was true is frankly not my concern. It's not like I'm using his ideas for my own life. It doesn't diminish my enjoyment of the book whether he was at serious risk of entering Italian prisons as stated in the book or if he actually had all the sexual escapades. It's a good story and that's really all that's important. What I found most interesting is that while listening, I'm rooting for him to escape and pull off his cons. I don't like criminals, but he was fun. If you are wanting a story that is based on reliable truth or if you abhor criminal behavior, then I wouldn't recommend this book. But if you are just wanting a good and fun read, then Catch Me... remains and thoroughly engrossing book.

Take it with a grain of salt. In the book everybody admires him, top professional want to work with him (without a resume, recommendation from a trusted colleague, or having even heard of him before a chance encounter), and beautiful women want to bed him. This is the basic formula that is repeated throughout the book. There was even a part of the story where a random crowd cheered for him. I don’t reckon this type main character energy occurs in real life, only in movie…. and Frank Abagnale’s book.

It’s a fun read though, so for that fact alone I would recommend it, but only as fiction.

The movie fell way short of the actual story in the book. The movie highlighted some of his most amazing scams, but the book also shows how he learned to scam better and more proficient so he could get away with taking mostly banks for even more. He also finally was caught, but the reality was far worse than what was hinted at in the movie. He spent a long time locked in a dungeon in France with guards as the only humans he might see. It was pretty gruesome. The book also covers his problems trying to live a straight life when his record made it almost impossible to get even minimum wage work. How eventually his inside knowledge was what made it possible for him to get paid to give banks seminars about their vulnerabilities, and how that led to a very successful carrier in teaching and changing security in the way security is handled all over the world. All that funny money we all carry...Those were basically his ideas to make money hard to reproduce on high quality printers.

This is really a damn good book. I bought his second book thinking it would continue the story from the first book, but it doesn’t do very much of that. His second and subsequent books are all guides for both personal and business securities. Which is good none the less

Like I said in my previous review of this memoir, I re-read this book every 6t 8 months. It is such a fun book to read. I just finished another reading of it. There are a lot of things in the book I had forgotten. Mr. Abagnale raised enough havoc with the banking and police systems in the late 60's and early 70's to make Bernie Madof look like a teenager. And at the time Frank was a teen-ager. No wonder Pan-Am went out of business. Frank probably was one of the main reasons.

If you are relying on the movie version of "Catch Me If You Can" for the story of Frank Abagnale, you are missing a great deal. There is a great deal of complexity in Mr. Abagnale's life that you are missing. It is the story of how a 16 year old kid who looks like he is a lot older can fool adults and the cops for years.

But it is more than that. It is alos the story of being caught and punished in some of the worst prisons in Europe, and some of the most humane. It is the story of how a boy becomes a man in spite of himself, and learns to value himself and others.

This is a book I keep active on my Kindle. I will probably re-read again in another 6 or 8 months. I like it that much.

LOVE this book!! Frank Abagnale is the inspiration for Matt Bomer's charming, handsome & brilliant con man/thief/forger/ladies' man character Neal Caffrey in the TV series "White Collar"...In the 6th Season finale of the show, Neal dresses as an airline pilot as a tribute to Abagnale...We the fans rooted for Neal as he outsmarted the Feds at every turn...When Abagnale was finally caught and did time, he turned his talents to teaching people to spot a con and not get taken by a grifter...This is a really enjoyable book, but is Abagnale actually conning the reader??

Author Frank W. Abagnale was a crook, thief, liar and a con artist. He made counterfit checks, money and several personalities. Eventually, he was caught, served time and has made ammends. This is a great story - it is funny, exciting, and you can't help but root for the bad guy. Part of what makes this so amazing is how young he was when all of this happened. Faking being a pilot? Doctor? Lawyer? He does all of that and more.

It's easy, fast reading. Perfect for a day at the beach. The movie was also excellent and very faithful to the book. It's hard to make a criminal appealing, but this book succeeds. My kids introduced it to me - they had to read it for a High School class, they both liked it as well.

This book is a classic case of "you can't make that up" no one would believe it. Since it's true, it is all the more entertaining. Highly recommended for those who like capers, crime stories, bad guys turned good with a little spice and humor tossed it, borrow the book, see the movie, you can't go wrong with either.

Very entertaining, Abignale's adventures are funny and food for thinking: his deductions and observation about the bank security (in his times) are good.
Nevertheless, I saw a video that shows that all that Abignale wrote in this book is fake... But it is entertaining.

Lo aconsejo
