Castillon-la-Bataille is a rural town of 3,160 inhabitants, capital of the canton of Coteaux de Dordogne, in Gironde.
From the year 845, the city of Castillon is mentioned: it is then a question of "Castillon which is on the Dordogne river", seat of the viscounty of Castillon created by Charlemagne. From the outset, the strategic site has been used as a castrum to monitor activity on the Dordogne. Around, a prosperous city was gradually built, surrounded by ramparts, part of which remains and is still visible today.
In 1953, for the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Castillon, which took place in 1453 on the outskirts of the town and ended the 100-year war between the French and the English, Castillon-sur-Dordogne took the name of " Castillon-la-Bataille".
