Looking for some indoor activities due to some inclement weather (we had a day of heavy rain infused with red dust!) we visited Villa San Marco, Villa Arianna and Libiro D’Orsi and loved every moment!

We drove, using Google Maps to help navigate - it’s not the easiest area to navigate. Free car park, there are toilets but no other services so eat before or take snacks and water.

We had free entry (end of March) but were encouraged to sign-in by a very friendly doorman who spoke English very well but as is common apologised for the amount he knew. He also made recommendations for other nearby sites.

Walking in, we were presented with the Atrium and due to the rain were treated to the impluvium in action. It was truly marvellous to see the sky through the roof aperture, rain cascading through, hidden plumbing directing water down to the opening. It is very much a reconstruction, thin lines of tile separate the original and reconstructed walls to help visitors appreciate the work done and extent of the remains.

The villa provides an opportunity to appreciate the scale and scope of a Roman villa with high ceilings, long sweeping corridors, all the walls covered in original painting (except where some have been removed to museums). Original plastered walls with paintings of trompe l’oeil scenes and characters give you a real sense of what the villa would have looked like

The gardens and outdoor pool , colonnades and peristyles are beautiful and let you see how majestic these would have been and garden rooms flooded with light suggest how the villa owners enjoyed their leisure time.
Truly worth a visit to complement Pompeii and Herculaneum ❤️

This little gem was recommended to us by our TUI rep in SORRENTO. Not on their list of tours but we’ll worth a visit. We took the circumvesuviana train to Castellammare di Stabia and the cable car is right there at the station. It’s an eight minute journey up Monte Faito and gives outstanding views of the Bay of Naples. Once at the top, there is a choice of a 20 minute walk to a viewing point or a 50 minute walk to a church with beautiful views. We chose the 50 minute walk and really enjoyed spending time in the cool shaded woodland, occasionally stopping to admire the far reaching views. Most of the way is pretty obvious although we did take a slight wrong turn towards the end but soon found ourselves at the church. Unfortunately it was all closed up and we could not gain entry to the grounds. Also, the clouds had come in over the top of the mountain and so we could not see the views on our walk back. But this did not really dampen our enjoyment. In fact it was quite a new experience on the journey down in the cable car as we descended through the mist into the sunshine again. A lovely afternoon spent doing something unexpected.

Often overlooked because of the high profile of Pompei - very well worth the visit and the quality of the site is just as good. Public transport close by or parking very easy.

I combined this visit with a trip to Villa San Marco which I visited first. It's about a 20 min walk from this villa.

They were doing some work to the grounds of the villa so 2 kids on their bikes showed me the way to the temporary entrance... and it only cost me €1 !!!

This villa is even better preserved than San Marco so well worth a visit.

About half way round one of the resident cats decided to befriend me and show me the way!! It walked me to each point of interest... very cute!

After leaving the villa it was a 20 minute walk back to Via Nochera train station.

Beautiful charm and lovely location. Retro area with friendly, happy people. Just stroll along the boardwalk, or walk down the quaint streets and enjoy the local shops.

Nice beach about 2kms from castellamarre di stabia. We walked here, which was not too bad. Staff were friendly and it was easy to rent out a sun bed. Price was good for location and quality of sun bed (7 € each). Would return especially in the middle of summer!!

Impressive looking castle overlooking the Bay of Naples at Castellammare di Stabia. According to our local guide the structure can only be viewed from the outside. The interior is used for weddings, meetings and other functions.
My 3 is based on the fact I would want to see inside.

I don't really know how people can eat their ice cream.
No taste and a lot of sugar inside.
    You can find better.

The cathedral or duomo, Santa Maria Assunta, is dedicated to the patron saint of Castellammare di Stabia, San Catello.
His 15th century statue can be seen in the chapel named after him.
The main altar and the surrounding Balustrade were first present in the Convent Church of the Dominican friars in nearby Angri. These were purchased in 1812 for 330 ducati (1 ducati: 3,500 grams of gold) as well as another 191 ducati were spent on transportation and installation.
At the rear of the altar can be seen an oil painting measuring 13X8 "palms" of the Holy Virgin thought to be painted by Luca Giordano.
The interior and the exterior has been recently restored and the result is one of splendor and a visual delight. The grand bronze entrance doors were sculpted by Antonio Berti and donated by the Banca Stabiese.
