Vogue supermodel Carre Otis, 52, shares rare portrait... over 20 years after ending 'abusive' marriage to Mickey Rourke where she cheated death when accidentally SHOT in the chest by his GUN

Carre Otis shared a rare portrait to Instagram on Friday.

The 52-year-old Marin County, California native looked serene as she wore little makeup and showed off her glowing silver mane.

It has been over 20 years since she divorced her 'abusive' Wild Orchid co-star Mickey Rourke, who is now 68, and stepped away from fame as she watched her contemporaries Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford stay in the spotlight.

In the new image Carre - who is the founder of Bare Mama Project and works with Model Alliance to address the lack of protections that models still don’t have - looks as stunning as ever as she wears a snake print top and gold ankh pendant around her neck.

Otis announced she was working on a new film.

'I spent my day with the magical @lucywalkerfilm working on an upcoming documentary that highlights one of my favorite subjects and greatest healers; Sacred Plant Teachers,' she said in her caption.

The star added her life has been 'compartmentalized' in so many ways and she wears many hats.

Walker is two-time Oscar-nominee and Emmy winner, and is the director of The Crash Reel, The Lion's Mouth Opens, Waste Land and Devil's Playground. 

Otis was one of the biggest supermodels of the 1990s as she posed for Guess and became a frequent Vogue cover girl.

When she was wed to Rourke from 1992 until 1998 their relationship turned chaotic.

In Beauty Disrupted: A Memoir, she said she was shot in the chest after Mickey stashed a handgun in her bag without letting her know. The bullet hit just two inches from her heart.

'We were on a set in Santa Fe, Mickey was working, and there was a horrific accident,' Carre has said in the past. 'There was a gun, his gun, it was in a bag.' Carre threw the bag down and the gun went off.

'I was hit with a .357 bullet,' she said. 'It was about two inches from my heart. It exited through my shoulder. I was really unbelievably lucky that is didn’t hit a bone.'

A survivor: She is on the Ambassador Council of the National Eating Disorders Association. 'Coming from the history and past that I come from, of sexual violence and rape, you have to turn that around and find a way to empower young women,' Otis told the Chronicle. 'I'd turned many corners and was coming from a place not of bull- but of honesty. It was another lifetime. One day, it will be an honest conversation with my kids'

Otis claims a fight turned physical in 1992, and he hit her again after that. She said she turned to heroin to cope with it all. 

Carre also had a very hard time in the modeling world.  

When entering the modeling world as a teenager she became anorexic, which she said led to health issues. She also said she used cocaine to stay thin.

Otis also said she was raped by her agent in Paris at age 17, something she detailed in her 2011 book Beauty, Disrupted.

She said the man was Gerald Marie, the head of Elite Paris. At the time he was engaged to supermodel Linda Evangelista.  

In 2012 Carre told the San Francisco Chronicle that she had became an advisory board member of the Model Alliance.

That is a nonprofit that is dedicated to improving the labor conditions and rights of models. 

She is on the Ambassador Council of the National Eating Disorders Association.  

'Coming from the history and past that I come from, of sexual violence and rape, you have to turn that around and find a way to empower young women,' Otis told the Chronicle.

'I'd turned many corners and was coming from a place not of bull- but of honesty. It was another lifetime. One day, it will be an honest conversation with my kids.'

She also said: 'It's a very sketchy industry, with grown-up problems enveloping minors. Any other industry would have child labor laws. How did that slip? People need to take responsibility for the damage done outside the industry - women and girls with eating disorders and dissatisfaction with their body image.'

She has been married to Matthew Sutton since 2005 and they live in Sonoma County with her daughters Kaya, 13, and Jade, 14.
