Caroline Kennedy, the current U.S. Ambassador to Australia, and the only living child of President Kennedy and his wife, Jackie, issued a statement remembering the late Queen Elizabeth, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 96.
“For seventy years, Queen Elizabeth II inspired people around the world for her selfless devotion to people and country. She served courageously in wartime, led gracefully in peacetime, and at all times embodied the ideals of service, dedication, and love for people and country," Kennedy said recalling the British monarch's seven-decade reign..
"I was deeply saddened to hear of her death today and will remember her as an inspiration and role model. My heartfelt condolences go to her family and to King Charles III as they mourn their beloved mother and Queen.”
Kennedy has several ties to the royal family. Of course, Australia remains a Commonwealth Realm, which means Queen Elizabeth served as the head of state of the country, and now, King Charles III has inherited the role.
Kennedy also previously met Queen Elizabeth at the dedication of a British memorial to her father, President Kennedy, at Runnymede in 1965, when she was just a girl.
“The unprecedented intensity of that wave of grief, mixed with something akin to despair, which swept over our people at the news of President Kennedy’s assassination, was a measure of the extent to which we recognized what he had already accomplished, and of the high hopes that rode with him in a future that was not to be,” the Queen said in a speech that day.
“Abroad, peace for a shrinking world; at home, a just and compassionate society. These were the themes of his Presidency. But it is his own example as a man that we remember…his courage, both moral and physical; his dedication to public service; the distinction of heart and mind, the joyful enthusiasm, the wit and style which he brought to all he did; his love of liberty and of his fellow men.”
