Have vacationed up and down the east coast. Carolina Beach ranks near the top of areas to AVOID! Parking is atrocious and expensive. $5-$6per hour and most places have a 2 hour limit. Wait an hour for a table, $6, order and hope the restaurant gets your food out promptly, another $6, restaurant is busy and takes time getting your food out, ka-ching another $6. Plus you have exceeded your 2 hour limit, now either move your vehicle or a ticket. $18 for parking for one dinner before parking ticket.
There are much nicer beaches up and down the coast that welcomes guests without this type of hassle. This will be our one and only visit. As a side note, we spent probably less than 3/4 what we normally do on vacation due to their policies.
Wilmington, NC to Kure Beach, NC I would consider to be the armpit of NC! Avoid this area if you want a nice vacation!

Carolina beach is so fun. Over 25 bars and restaurant's within walking distance and it’s not over build so the beaches are not crowded. Love Carolina beach. Food was great everywhere and reasonably priced.

Be prepared to pay 25 dollars a day to park or pay huge fines! Ft Fisher beach 4x4 closes at 730. Carolina beach state park will lock you in at 10.pm. the locals don't want tourist there.

Seriously they keep upping the fines, now it’s $100 for missing even a minute for a parking ticket with cameras. The fact that there’s no parking anywhere in town, it’s difficult to get to any restaurants or businesses at peak hours, and all there is you have to pay to park in small lots. It’s really not worth the hassle driving to this island. If you miss the meter, any meter, they’re aggressively trying to take more of your cash and there’s really not sh. to do here, it’s all in Wilmington anyways which isn’t close. Better going to any other beach town as they probably have planned roadways and parking much better than this town. Keep away

We stayed at the hotel on the beach.
This time of year doesn't boast a lot of quality places to dine. Tried to eat at the Havana but they were closed one day randomly while there and refunded our online order the next. So we ended up eating at The Dive, a local bar hangout where we were not really welcomed. Kate's pancake house was extremely hospitable and the food portions were incredible for the price. Alley bites and the Majik Bean were also good places and very hospitable as well. Most of the locals definitely have a chip on their shoulder. The beach was nice but the painful biting flies, stinging bees and hornets did their best to ruin the experience. Bring an effective insect repellent or you'll be suffering while trying to relax, not fun! Bring your walking shoes too or else you will have to pay for parking "anywhere" you go on the island!

This is the worst place I have ever been they charge you a enormous fee to park and even with a parking pass they still right you a ticket because the meters don’t work this place is more dysfunctional the blue state city’s , stay away or you will learn a hard lesson go on face book and read the article from pleasure island news see for yourself.

If you’re looking for a destination that is more of a local experience and not commercialized, this is it. The beach isn’t packed, the restaurants are good, there are some beach shops for your souvenirs and whatnot … We stay in condos; there aren’t many hotels. Even with children ages 9 and 16, this is a good place for us.

Not good restaurant (tried different ones even 4 stars)
Not good boardwalk (to small i think 1/4 mile)
I paid around $100 with parking just for 3 days.
Just for comparison Myrtle Beach is 10x better than Carolina Beach.
Only thing that is good is the FreeMan park where you drive your car at the beach

my wife & i ate at dinner at a local restaurant. we parked in the lot adjacent to the restaurant. i paid using a credit card. i was unable to read the LCD display on the attendant. i assumed i was paying a flat rate for parking. when we arrived back home i received a ticket for $45. i had a credit card receipt for $8.80. i disputed the ticket, but was denied because i had only paid for 1 hour. So, i ended up paying $58.80, substantially greater than my $16 meal. Parking at $8.80/hr for 2 hours is still more that i paid for dinner. i will not visit this area again. too rich for me,

$25 to park ANYWHERE (to include handicap) is cray. We use to come to this beach often. Thinking that we will take our money somewhere else now.

Stop at Costco and pick up a couple Tommy Bahamma folding beach chairs for less than the cost of renting. If you're not a Costco member, there's always Walmart.

My friend and I will be visiting Carolina Beach the first week of October (1st-4th). Is it still possible to swim, weather permitting, even though its considered the shoulder season?

First week of October.. water is cooling off, but still probably 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Can be some beautiful sunny days with air temps in the mid 70s. Obviously not bath water temps, but doable. Shoulder seasons can be beautiful with diminished crowds and most businesses in full operation.

My family and I are hoping to visit this July. How much damage did Florence cause to the beach and homes? How much damage was in the town of Wilmington? Thank you!!!!!!

Its like it never happened. Wilmington is the hurricane magnet of the east coast. These people are used to it and make the investments needed to stay in business after a major hurricane. I can't even tell there was a hurricane here just 9 months later. You can't say that about New York or New Jersey after Hurricane Sandy and that was 4 years ago.
