Celtic news: McAvennie ‘can’t believe’ Carl Starfelt footage missed by BBC cameras

Frank McAvennie can’t believe Motherwell’s Josh Morris got away with a poor challenge on Celtic defender Carl Starfelt.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker branded the tackle a “leg breaker” and couldn’t understand why VAR didn’t intervene.

The challenge was not shown on the BBC’s Sportscene but fans on Twitter shared footage of the incident which showed a high tackle on Starfelt in the game at Fir Park on Wednesday (9 November).

Morris was booked for the challenge and Celtic were awarded a free kick.

The Green and Whites went on to win the game 2-1.

When asked for his analysis of the incident, McAvennie told Football Insider: “That is a leg breaker if I have ever seen one.

You cannot get away with that. He did not get anywhere near the ball.

I was a big fan of referees, if they made a mistake who cares, it is done. But there is now three of them making mistakes. It is just embarrassing.

I know that some people are making a lot of money out of VAR. The referee should not get any help unless it is obvious. I was very hesitant but I thought it was going to help but I am not a big fan.

The Hoops are currently top of the Premiership table following a 2-1 win over Ross County on Saturday (12 November).

The Parkhead club are nine points clear of their Glasgow rivals Rangers heading into the winter break.
