Can you see a 3d movie in theaters without having to wear the glasses?
Avatar is being re-released in theaters, and I've never seen it, so I'd like to get the cinematic experience.
However, it's only in 3d in my local theater, but I don't want to deal with the glasses since I'd have to wear them in conjunction with my normal ones.
If I went and didn't put the 3d glasses on, will it just appear as a normal movie to me?
You refuse to wear 3D glasses at a 3D movie, jail.
You wear 3D glasses during non 3D movie, also jail.
No, it will not appear normal to you. It’ll be unwatchable.
You sure they don’t have any 2D showings? A lot of theaters will alternate.
None at all. I'm considering driving to another town to see a 2d showing.
Just put the 3D glasses on over your normal ones.
That's what I always have to do.
Edit: If you want to get the 'cinematic experience' of Avatar, you need to watch it in 3D. No ifs, ands or buts about it.
It'll look out of focus, like images are overlapping each other.

Just FYI, the 3D glasses fit over glasses. It's not a problem. (Unless you wear special glasses that are different than most people wear; if so, no offence intended.)
I would suggest watching AVATAR in 3D if possible. It's part of the experience.
It will look blurry
No, you can't. The picture will be a pair of flat double images.
One in blue and one in red.
The glasses don't create the 3D effect on their own. Otherwise you could wear them to any movie and it would look 3D.
Hold your finger out in front of you and focus on it. Do you see how the stuff in the background is doubled? Now change your focus from your finger to the background - the effect is reversed. Now you have 2 fingers instead of 1.
3D movies are made based on this same principle. They're filmed with two camera lenses very close together, like your eyes. And like your eyes, each one captures a slightly different angle of the same thing. When it's projected on the screen, your eyes can't change focus because the screen itself is flat. You can't focus on the part that's closer or further away because it's all the same distance from your eyes. So the image on the screen is doubled, just like your out-of-focus vision.
The 3D glasses correct this by filtering out the extra image in the projection. So your left eye only sees what the left camera saw, and your right eye only sees the right camera. Basically the glasses fix the problem of not being able to focus your eyes on the foreground or background.
The 3D glasses will work over the top of your prescription specs. But without them, it would be unwatchable.
No. It would look terrible. Super blurry and everything. Honestly the 3D isn't bad and adds to the experience. Saw Jaws in 3D at the theater a week or two ago and it was awesome.
If you have never seen it you have to see it in 3D. It's one of if not the only movie that you must see in 3D at least once
I you won’t be able to. The 3D effect is created by essentially filming the scene with two cameras at slightly different angles. So if you take your glasses off for the movie, it will look as if you were trying to see the world slightly cross-eyed. Still viewable, but will fuck your eyes trying to constantly refocus it properly. Probably cause a hell of a headache.
fwiw, 3D glasses are made kinda goofily oversized and should fit over your normal glasses. I wear glasses and have never had a problem with the 3D ones. I'm sure it's probably annoying to some people though.
No, the film will appear blurry and washed out.
I know this is a little late and you've probably seen it or not, but the movie itself was actually filmed in 3d to be viewed in 3d... I've seen the imax 3d version and I own the 2d bluray.... hands down the 3d version is an edge of your seat adventure that you'll never forget... I can still see the animals like they are in the theater with you or the ah snow from home-tree burning... the 2d version is just an above average movie... I never got one but worth the headache...
Well, I think I'm the only one that can see 3D movies without glasses. In fact, if I put them on I see worse, they darken the image, I don't perceive the depth of the scenes very well and it gives me a visual sensation as if I were cross-eyed that makes my eyesight uncomfortable. Just the opposite as normal.
Therefore, if I am forced to watch a 3D movie, I prefer to take them off since I can understand everything much better. Although I must be a little crazy because I don't know another person who can do the same as me, since normal people can't even read the subtitles without glasses, while I read them almost perfectly with naked eyes.
