Question about Monticello

Even though I live in Virginia, I have never visited Monticello! We are taking a trip to Staunton this weekend and would like to finally fit in a visit. I looked at the website and am confused about tickets and admission. What we really want to do is just walk about the grounds on our own - is that permissable? I am really not interested in doing the house tour this visit - so is there a ticket that just lets you walk around in the gardens by yourself or does everything have to be done "tour style"?

1. Re: Question about Monticello

When we were there in 2009, no one checked to see if we had a ticket for the grounds. We rode the bus to the house from the visitor's center and they did check.

There's a trail you can take past the cemetary and on to the grounds. Honestly, it isn't as interesting as you might think. We did enjoy the house tour though. The guide was quite good.

Here's a link to some pictures from our visit.

We were just there last week. As I recall, you can walk around the grounds for free. However, I agree that there really isn't that much to see outside. No real showy gardens, it's more historical and thus useful kinds of gardens. You can see the family burial site. I wouldn't think it would be worth it. The house tours are admittedly a little steep and they jam too many people into each tour.

3. Re: Question about Monticello

We just visited Monticello last week. I was a bit taken back by the price as well - no discounts for AAA members, students, educators - nothing. They did check our tickets before we boarded the bus and when we got in line for the Monticello house tour. If you don't mind walking up/down the hill to just walk around the gardens/grounds surrounding Monticello I guess you could probably forgo the admission. I also agree with the previous poster - they jam way too many people in a tour group and the tour really doesn't last that long.

Another way, would be find a local resident and agree to split the entry fee with them. Local residents get in free when accompanying a non-local paying full price.

5. Re: Question about Monticello

If Monticello has decided to offer a discount whereby locals get in free when a visiting guest pays full price, how on earth is it theft to suggest that those two people agree to split the visitor's ticket cost between them? So long as Monticello gets the one paid admission it has asked for, how those two people decide to split the cost is a wholly private matter.

As a double Wahoo who twice swore to abide by the honor code, it gets my attention whenever I see a Hoo call someone else out for"dishonesty. It really gets my attention when it isn't warranted. I think you owe JJuva13 an apology.

I didn't notice this topic the first go round. I'm thinking bogo. I don't know whether Monticello thought it through but bogos can be a lot about community within the purchasing community. Whether in retail or restaurants, it's often about siblings or friends not getting the "free" one or the "full price" one, but splitting the cost and thereby being able to enjoy the item at all.
