Quick Links

Jiren is one of the most powerful characters in the history of Dragon Ball. Jiren initially arises as the main antagonist of Dragon Ball Super's Tournament of Power and he stands in the way of Goku and the rest of Universe 7 as they fight for their universe's survival.

As one of Dragon Ball's strongest characters, Jiren is capable of besting a God of Destruction, which makes a strong case for why he's one of the strongest mortals to ever grace the multiverse. As such, there are countless individuals in Dragon Ball who eventually get bested by Jiren in combat. However, power levels are a fickle thing in Dragon Ball and there are still several characters who could find ways to win in a potential skirmish.

Updated on January 16, 2024, by Ajay Aravind: Although a recent introduction, Dragon Ball Super's Jiren is arguably one of the most iconic characters in the entire franchise. As the leader of the Pride Troopers, Jiren's influence on the story cannot be understated. As such, we've updated this list of characters who can either defeat Jiren or face a humiliating defeat at his hands.

Dragon Ball Sparking Zero Release Date "Leak" Fools a Few, Impresses Most
Some Dragon Ball fans starving for news about the new Budokai Tenkaichi game have fallen for a fake release date leak for the upcoming Sparking! Zero.

Androids have been a persistent threat in Dragon Ball ever since the original series. In Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Dr. Hedo releases Gamma 1 and 2, an Android duo that puts every past model to shame. These two mechanical creations give Gohan and Piccolo a tough time until they ascend to their new transformations.

However, it stands to reason that Jiren could hold his own against these two thanks to his admirable meditation skills and devastating energy attacks. Jiren is likely to take Gamma 1 and 2’s crusade personally since they masquerade as heroes and he’s actually a part of Universe 11’s heroic police force, the Pride Troopers.

Hit Cannot Surpass Jiren's Rate Of Progression

Hit from Dragon Ball Super strikes a pose.

Main Abilities

Time Skip

Tides of Time

Universe 6's famed assassin Hit is an extremely powerful character, strong enough to kill most of those who stand in his way. Hit's physical abilities are practically unparalleled. However, his true strength lies in the ability to skip through time. Furthermore, Hit's progression is incredible, especially when he fights opponents who are stronger than him.

Despite this, Hit is still unlikely to conquer Jiren in battle. Jiren's powers are even beyond time, which Vados explains during the Tournament of Power. This means that no matter how much Hit improves his Time-Skip technique, he is still more likely to lose the fight than win.

Goku Black Is Effortlessly Outclassed By Jiren

Goku Black creates Sickle of Sorrow out of energy in Dragon Ball Super

Main Abilities

Black Power Ball

God Split Cut

Goku Black is the form that Zamasu, the Supreme Kai of Universe 10, takes during an especially dark period in Dragon Ball Super. Zamasu aims to destroy all mortals, whom he considers to be nothing but sinful vermin. Ultimately, this crusade leads him into conflict with Goku, Vegeta, and Future Trunks in a no-holds-barred apocalyptic showdown.

While Goku Black was able to overpower Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta, it still turned into a close fight. This means that Jiren would be able to outclass Goku Black by quite a bit. Jiren takes on Ultra Instinct Goku, which goes far beyond Super Saiyan Blue power. In the end, Goku Black's fiery rage isn't enough to defeat Jiren.

Kefla Can't Even Come Close To Matching Ultra Instinct Goku

Main Abilities

Gigantic Blast

New Super Dragon Ball Heroes Opening Delivers Dragon Ball GT Nostalgia
The new opening for the anime web series Super Dragon Ball Heroes is evoking nostalgic vibes for Dragon Ball GT with Super Saiyan 4 Goku and more.

The fusion of Kale and Caulifla, Kefla, is an extremely powerful fused Saiyan fighter from Universe 6. Thanks to Kale's special Legendary Super Saiyan form, Kefla is several times stronger than the average fusion. In Kefla's fight against Goku, she manages to push him over the edge into Ultra Instinct.

This in itself is a testament to Kefla's phenomenal power. Unfortunately for Kefla, Jiren is far stronger than Ultra Instinct Goku, who beats Kefla without even being at the top of his game or fully understanding his new strength. Kefla's defeat is only a matter of time when Jiren is involved.

Legendary Super Saiyan Broly Will Tire Jiren Out But Not Defeat Him

Broly releases his Eraser Cannon in Dragon Ball Super: Broly

Main Abilities

Powered Shell

Eraser Cannon

Broly is a Saiyan from Universe 7 who grew up on Planet Vampa. Being the Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly is someone whose powers are exceptionally higher than that of the average Saiyan. To put that into perspective, Broly was able to fight and overwhelm two Super Saiyan Blue-level warriors with a mere Super Saiyan transformation.

However, when it comes to fighting someone like Gogeta, Broly shows signs of struggle, especially since much of his rage is an explosive release that he can't control. On a purely physical level, Jiren and Broly are likely quite close. What sets these two apart is that Jiren relies on intense meditation and calculated strategies, whereas Broly fights purely through instinct, which has its share of setbacks.

Characters Jiren Can't Defeat

Black Frieza Is The Result Of A Decade In The Hyperbolic Time Chamber

Black Frieza defeats Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta in Dragon Ball Super manga.

Main Abilities

Death Beam

Death Cannon

A lot of dangerous Dragon Ball villains have made bids for power, but Frieza is by far the most persistent of the lot. Frieza’s powerful Golden transformation can go toe-to-toe with Super Saiyan Blue power, but Dragon Ball Super’s manga has introduced an even more intimidating echelon of strength.

Black Frieza is the result of ten focused years of training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. This upgrade allows him to eviscerate the Heeter Force’s Gas, but he also knocks out Ultra Ego Vegeta and Ultra Instinct Goku in a single blow. Jiren can’t contend with either Perfected Ultra Instinct or Ultra Ego, so there’s no way he’d stand a chance against Black Frieza.

Gohan Beast Surpasses Even Goku At His Strongest

Main Abilities

Dragon Ball's Shenron Reimagined by Hilariously "Unhinged" Low Cost Cosplay
It's the angle no one wished for: low-cost cosplayer Lonelyman is back with a so-called "unhinged" version of Dragon Ball's Shenron.

Dragon Ball has teased Gohan's potential ever since his first appearance and he slowly surpasses not only his father but every other Saiyan once he accesses Super Saiyan 2 strength. Dragon Ball Super hasn't been easy for Gohan fans, but the newest feature film, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, finally gives Gohan the showcase that he deserves.

Gohan didn’t stand a chance against Jiren in the Tournament of Power, but Gohan Beast is another story. Gohan Beast seems to be the only one who can defeat Cell MAX, another character who Jiren would likely struggle against. An eventual fight between Jiren and Gohan Beast will hopefully settle the matter.

Ultra Ego Vegeta Grows Stronger The More Damage He Takes

Vegeta transforms into Ultra Ego in the Dragon Ball Super manga.

Main Abilities

Hakai

Gamma Burst Flash

Dragon Ball fans have gotten used to Vegeta following in Goku's footsteps and struggling to match his milestones. Dragon Ball Super's manga wisely puts Vegeta on his own path that reflects his own strengths rather than merely imitating Goku's accomplishments. Then again, Vegeta still can't defeat Jiren in the Tournament of Power.

However, Ultra Ego Vegeta represents a powerful evolution that feeds into the Saiyan's aggressive tendencies. Ultra Ego Vegeta actively grows stronger the more damage he takes, which means that Jiren's massive blows will only amplify Vegeta's power and rage.

Super Saiyan Blue Vegito Can Bring Jiren Down With Smart Time Management

Vegito Blue uses the Final Kamehameha in Dragon Ball Super

Main Abilities

Instant Transmission

Forced Spirit Fission

Super Saiyan Blue Vegito is the next stage in power when it comes to Potara Earing fusions between Universe 7's heaviest hitters. A Super Saiyan Blue fusion is intensely powerful and it becomes the world's saving grace during Zamasu and Goku Black's calculated reign of terror. Fused Zamasu is an immortal evil, but Vegito still dominates the fight and the only reason that he doesn't secure the win is that the fusion accidentally wears off.

That being said, Super Saiyan Blue Vegito could easily bring down Jiren if this fused fighter figures out some time management skills. Vegito is an incalculably powerful being, and Jiren wouldn't stand a chance, especially with tricks like Instant Transmission and Forced Spirit Fission also in the mix.

10 Best Twists in Dragon Ball Super, Ranked
Dragon Ball Super is filled with jawdropping twists like Vegeta's Ultra Ego transformation and Gohan's new form.

There's a lot to appreciate in Dragon Ball Super's Tournament of Power, but dedicated fans were treated to one of the series' biggest clashes in the form of Ultra Instinct Goku versus Jiren. Jiren initially holds the upper hand, but Goku's growing confidence in his mysterious new form gives him the lead.

Jiren is unquestionably powerful, but Goku's Ultra Instinct skills have only grown more robust following the Tournament of Power. It hasn't been easy, but Goku has attained Perfected Ultra Instinct, gotten in touch with his Saiyan roots, and can wield a gigantic energy avatar to fight for him in battle.

Lord Beerus Is Possibly The Strongest God Of Destruction

Beerus prepares a Hakai blast in Dragon Ball Super.

Main Abilities

Destruction before Creation

Continuous Energy Bullet

Lord Beerus is Universe 7's God of Destruction and quite possibly the strongest of these 12 apocalyptic figures. Beerus is aided by the standard God of Destruction perks like the erasing power of Hakai, but he's never fully applied himself to a battle in the series. Beerus could wipe out Earth in an instant, but he's built a reputation for prolonged laziness and a passion for rich cuisine.

The Tournament of Power reveals that Jiren has his own unique relationships with the Gods of Destruction and he could likely become Universe 11's representative if he were so inclined. Jiren simultaneously takes on Ultra Instinct Goku, Kefla, and Vegeta, but none of this means anything in the true face of God of Destruction strength. All that Beerus needs to do is catch Jiren off-guard and he's as good as gone.

Whis' Overall Strength Is Too High To Even Comprehend

Main Abilities

Autonomous Ultra Instinct

Prelude to Destruction

Dragon Ball Super spends a lot of time establishing the threat of Gods of Destruction, but it's actually their supplementary Angels that possess greater power. Whis is Universe 7's Angel icon and he's forbidden from joining battles and helping alter the fate of reality simply because his strength is difficult to comprehend.

Whis simultaneously trains Goku and Vegeta, which is no small feat. However, Whis also possesses unique skills, like the creation of pocket dimensions and the limited use of Temporal Do-Overs, which can marginally turn back time. Not even a fraction of Whis' full strength has been seen, and it likely never will, but it's still fascinating to consider. Ultra Instinct may even be an Angel's natural state, which should indicate how superior Whis is to Jiren.

Vados Is Most Likely Stronger Than Even Her Sibling

Champos and Vados standing next to one another in Dragon Ball Super

Main Abilities

Strike of Revelation

Time Rewind

Just like Whis, Vados is one of Dragon Ball Super's Angel attendants. However, Vados is occasionally the subject of mockery since she's saddled with Universe 6's uncouth God of Destruction, Champa. Vados doesn't get half the attention that Whis does, yet she's likely the stronger of the two special siblings.

Whether Vados is demonstrably stronger than Whis remains to be seen, but physical strength is never going to be the deciding factor when someone faces an Angel. Vados' Angel powers far surpass the likes of most Gods of Destruction. Even if she doesn't stoop to Angel-exclusive skills, she's still bound to win against Jiren.

Dragon Ball Super's Grand Priest Is The Strongest Of All The Angels

Main Abilities
