Warning: Spoilers for Anyone but You!

Summary

  • One curious element of the new rom-com Anyone But You is the fact that Ben (Glen Powell) has a chained-up ATM in his apartment.
  • Anyone But You never explains the mystery of Ben's chained-up ATM.
  • Unresolved details about Ben's character suggest he has a rich offscreen life that could be further explored in a possible sequel.

There is a great deal of mystery surrounding Ben's chained-up ATM from Anyone But You. The modern romantic comedy, which was directed by Easy A's Will Gluck from a screenplay he co-wrote with High School Musical: The Musical: The Series' Ilana Wolpert, had a slow start at the box office, opening at No. 4 with a $6 million debut. However, as word of mouth grew, it eventually rose to become a substantial hit, earning $219 million worldwide against its budget of $25 million.

Over the course of the movie, quite a few details are revealed about the lead Anyone But You characters Ben (Glen Powell) and Bea (Sydney Sweeney), who are inspired by the characters Benedick and Beatrice from William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. This especially includes anything relating to their immediate circumstances, including their relationships with their exes Margaret (Charlee Fraser) and Jonathan (Darren Barnet). There is also quite a bit of intrigue about both characters, including the chained-up ATM seen in Ben's apartment in the early going before the story's setting moves to Australia.

Anyone But You Never Explains The Chained ATM In Ben's Apartment

The Strange Anyone But You Object Remains A Stubborn Mystery

By the time the Anyone But You ending plays out, Ben's chained-up ATM remains unexplained. However, the object is mentioned several times throughout the movie. The most direct reference to it comes during the time that it first appears, when Bea and Ben go back to his apartment while on their disastrous first date. Bea does ask him to explain various strange things around his apartment, but while he explains his giant decorative wrench, his only response to her question about the ATM is "that... is a long story. Everybody survived."

The wrench was a gift from Ben's mother, which came with the thematically important lesson that anything broken can be fixed.

While the movie doesn't go into detail on Ben's profession, as it largely takes place on a destination wedding vacation, it does reveal that he works in finance. Thus, the ATM seems to have some connection to his career, however tangential. It may be connected to an early job at a bank, with the chains either being related to its illicit transport or the fact that it has been decommissioned. There is also a possibility that it is an art piece that is a replica of an ATM, though that seems less likely given the chains.

The Anyone But You Character Has A Rich Offscreen Life

While Anyone But You never resolves the mystery surrounding Ben's ATM, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. These details could be further explored in the possible sequel Anyone But You 2, which has not yet been greenlit but is entirely possible given the movie's financial success. However, even if the follow-up movie never comes to fruition, the fact that some mysteries about the character remain proves that Ben has a rich offscreen life that helps make him a rounded character.
