Cameron Carter-Vickers shares what he told Don Robertson at Aberdeen's big penalty call vs Celtic

Now that we have had time to sleep on the Celtic result over Aberdeen at Hampden, looking back at the game is now done with joy rather than nerves.

Because I don’t know about you but mine were shredded by the time Joe Hart saved that last Aberdeen penalty that put us through to the Scottish Cup Final in May.

From going behind early to getting ahead and looking good only to get outdone twice by two late Aberdeen goals, a rollercoaster doesn’t have as many twists and turns as that game did yesterday.

But there was one huge call in extra time that the Celtic fans, and Cameron Carter-Vickers, were both sure that a penalty was about to get awarded.

The Celtic defender kicked Aberdeen forward, Junior Hoilett, and at first glance we all thought a penalty had been awarded by referee, Don Robertson.

However, he was actually blowing for a foul on Alistair Johnston much to the relief of the US international.

Carter-Vickers ‘praying’ for VAR to go Celtic’s way

It really was an incredibly confusing couple of minutes for the Celtic defender and the fans and as VAR was completing its full check on the incident, Carter-Vickers shared what he told the match referee at the time.

When asked if he thought it was a penalty, Carter-Vickers said [Daily Record], “Yes, I did, to be honest. It probably was a foul. We didn’t get given the (earlier) foul before but then we did.

“I thought it was given but then when it wasn’t I was happy. You obviously don’t want to concede late and then you’re thinking at that point it’s going to penalties.

“I was praying. The ref just said it was a foul against Alistair Johnston.

“And then I saw VAR was checking it. I said to him ‘If you’ve seen it on the pitch then just stick to your decision.”

Thankfully, the decision went Celtic’s way but it didn’t stop the last-minute drama when Aberdeen scored their equaliser to take the game to penalties.

Celtic eventually booked their place in the final after a sudden-death penalty shoot-out but one thing is for sure, this game will likely go down as one of the most dramatic semi-final’s in the history of the competition.
