Former Florida State Guard Finds New Destination After Entering Transfer Portal

After entering the transfer portal on March 30th, former Florida State guard Caleb Mills will now be playing at Memphis for his final season of college basketball to play for Penny Hardaway.

The Tigers are coming off of a season where they went 26-9 and won the American Athletic Conference tournament championship, before falling to Florida Atlantic in disappointing fashion in the opening round at the beginning of FAU's run to the Final Four. Mills is coming off a season where he averaged 13.0 PPG, 3.4 APG, and 3.0 RPG.
This is going to be an interesting fit for Mills. Memphis' top 9 scorers from last season were seniors, but 6 of them started their careers elsewhere, and Coach Hardaway is known for giving his guards a lot of freedom. Lead guard Kendric Davis is coming off of a season in which he averaged 21.7 PPG, and Hardaway could possibly see Mills sliding into that role. Mills doesn't show the same passion that Davis does though, and it's going to be vital to Memphis that they find a way to get him comfortable.
Even though Caleb Mills didn't work out for the best at Florida State, he's an extremely talented player and it was evidenced by the list of teams that had contacted him soon after he entered the portal: Kansas, Arkansas, Cincinnati, Minnesota, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, and South Carolina were among the first teams teams to reach out. Now he's headed back to the conference where he started his career, but just playing for a different program.
Memphis has somewhat underwhelmed under Coach Hardaway, but they've bounced around from taking a lot of transfers to a lot of high school recruits. Currently, Memphis has the 7th-ranked class in the 2023 rankings with 5 signees, including 5-star guard Mikey Williams. They've also received commitments from two transfers in Temple's Nick Jourdain and SMU's Jahmar Young Jr.
From Florida State's side, we're still waiting to see how many spots will open up, though we're still assuming they're wanting to take 3-4 transfers. We've expected a few names to enter the portal by now, but nothing has been official since Mills entered the portal. They have been somewhat active in transfers that they're after, having done in-home visits with La Salle transfer Josh Nickelberry and VCU transfer Jalen DeLoach, while being named finalists for Georgetown's Primo Spears and FIU's Denver Jones.
