Seven-time swimming Olympic gold medallist Caeleb Dressel showed he's on his way to top form once again, recording his first win in the pool since taking an extended break following the 2022 World Championships.

The 27-year-old won the men's 100m butterfly on Friday (1 December) at the U.S. Open Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina, flipping from sixth place at the halfway point to first at the finish.

Dressel clocked 51.31, just 0.01 ahead of Ilya Kharun. Josh Liendo was third in 51.42.

"It's always exciting to see fast times," Dressel told U.S. broadcaster Peacock afterwards. "It's not something I need right now, training's been going great, so it's a little cherry on top to see last night and tonight some pretty good times. We're in a good spot. It's fun to be back."

The crowd agreed, giving Dressel the loudest ovation of the session, acknowledging the long climb the champion swimmer has faced in his return to the sport.

"It's pretty much the halfway marker, we're in a really good spot," Dressel said of what the race means for his chances at next summer's Paris Olympics. "Throwing up some times [that are] probably a little quicker than I thought I would be at this point in the season."

Canadian phenom Summer McIntosh also cruised to victory on Friday.

McIntosh, just 17, won the opening race of the evening, the 400m medley. The two-time defending World champion and current world recorder holder in the event was the class of the field, winning by almost exactly eight seconds. McIntosh finished at 4:29.96 while Anastasia Gorbenko (4:37.90) was second. Three-time Olympic medallist Regan Smith was third at 4:38.77.

"Overall I'm pretty happy with that," McIntosh said. "But every time I swim the 400 IM, I always learn something from it."

A night after coming up just short to McIntosh in the 400m freestyle, seven-time Olympic gold medallist Katie Ledecky was second again in the women's 200m final.

Siobhan Haughey of Hong Kong, China won in 1:54.20, just over two seconds clear of Ledecky (1:56.29) with Rio 2016 100 free gold medallist Simone Manuel third in 1:57.37. Haughey had an impressive quick turnaround, adding the women's 100m breaststroke title later in the evening (1:06.05).

Friday's busy night of finals also saw six other swimmers take wins:

  • Men's 400m medley - Chase Kalisz (4:10.42)
  • Women's 100m butterfly - Torri Huske (56.21)
  • Men's 200m freestyle - Rafael Miroslaw (1:45.92)
  • Men's 100m breaststroke - Denis Petrashov (59.46)
  • Women's 100m backstroke - Regan Smith (58.16)
  • Men's 100m backstroke - Hubert Kos (53.19)

Competition in Greensboro continues through Saturday with more races ahead for swimming stars Ledecky, Smith, McIntosh, Ryan Murphy and others. Fans can watch the event via Peacock TV or the USA Swimming Network.
