Avant gothic country (well, distantly), beautifully distorted art pop, swiftly moving into-depths cello music with quirky smooth chamber indie pop. Some a bit annoying electropop and American music resembling bits. Not stereotypical dark cabaret, but it feels fresh, artistically, yet super accessible even as quite experimental music. Delicate and original, one of the better "alternative" and art pop albums.Published

Rasputina is the kind of beast I need to deal with in the right environment. This feels like a backstage conversation between underpaid actors in a badly lit Victorian theatre ca. 1888 with a sold out performance coming up and Jack the Ripper lurking around outside. I guess I have to look for a rundown opera to make properly sense of it.
There’s a theatrical and baroque vibe at work which got obvious devotees in the form of Emilie Autumn, albeit Rasputina is far less psychotic. There’s still some ghosts of dueling nobles swirling around here. Spooky stuff, but almost tender compared to the suicide-ridden loons that plague most artists worthy of comparison.

This is easily the best thing they ever did, IMO. It is not a huge departure from the previous album, but it is a big improvement. My biggest issue with this band is that they can be kind of cheesy -- they are equal parts Kate Bush and Emily Autumn, and here they find the perfect balance of the wispy Victorian and the gaudy '90s goth. The electronic elements in their music can be quite bad at times, but fortunately this album has nothing as annoying as "DwarfStar" or "MayFly". Their lyrics, which can also get pretty bad like on the album that came after this, are quite clever here.

+cellos, eerie atmosphere
-clumsy industrial elements, vocals that remain in the same register throughout
=what could have been an interesting cross genre blend of goth, chamber pop and industrial stops short of its goal. Moments of beauty do occur ( in the opener "Gingerbread Coffin" for example) and the potential is there for bigger and better things, however it's seriously marred by an inability to turn their ideas into actually memorable songs, plus the cross of industrial noise with wispy vocals does get annoying more often than not.

_Cabin Fever_ is the album that got me into Rasputina. After about a month of listening to it over and over, I fell hard for the band.
Most of the songs here would be considered too dark for the average listener, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be given a chance. This album is quite captivating, really, and is perfect for anyone who wants to listen to something interesting and different - very, very different.

There are alot of really strong tracks here, but it is not as good as their previous releases. Tracks to check out: A Quitter, Hunter's Kiss, Our Lies, and Gingerbread Coffin
