Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

After searching high and low for a new Chinese restaurant since the closure of Cathay Dim Sum at the Trafford Centre, I found my new favourite just ten minutes drive away at China Cottage! Beautiful setting with a team that were so helpful and lovely,...all of which complimented the amazing food. The crispy duck was drool worthy, our mains (beef curry and crispy chilli chicken) were tasty, hot and decent portions and the basics of egg fried rice and soft noodles were done perfectly. Pricing was very fair and certainly more so that some other restaurants I’ve tried recently. Cannot recommend enough!More

Let down by the newly re-opened China Buffet in nearby Bury - apparently it is no longer a serve-yourself buffet; but you now get table service and MUST order by smartphone app. None of our party had a working phone with them, so we were...turned away. Great welcome at China Cottage where we turned up on spec. Excellent food, piping hot, strongly recommend the mixed Dim Sum starter selection, good sized portions and nothing is too much trouble. Will return soon.More

A family party of 8 for my 88yr old mum birthday bash, including a 4 and 6 yr old. We were well seated on the ground floor. The food and staff were excellent. Sunday buffet great value. They surprised mum with a birthday cake supplied...by us but they gave us containers to take it away portiond as we were far too full to eat any if it! We had a lovely visit. Thank you everyone. 😊More

Dined alone in an empty restaurant. Duck was lovely, and large prawns in chow mein. Unfortunately the rest of the chow mein was gooey and too wet. Also, the staff decided to bag all the prawn crackers in the restaurant so the entire time I...was there all I could hear was very load plastic bag scrunching and rustling and the kitchen door banging and squeaking every time they went in and out, which was a lot for an empty restaurant! I eventually asked for my food to be takeaway as i wasn't enjoying all the noise. Also my 3 dishes and soft drink came to over £40, for 1 person! Wouldn't return unfortunately.More

Visited here last Sunday for a friends birthday, there was plenty of us, we filled the down stairs room. The service was great, the staff very good could not do enough for us. The food was very good and just kept coming and coming, tasty...and hot. If i lived that side of the big hills and not in Gods own county I would visit more often the food well worth a visit.More

Visited on Sunday evening for dinner with friends. We chose the al la carte menu as opposed to the cheaper Sunday set menu. Dim sum combination starters were good but the main meals were not as good as we have had previously. Service was slow...and staff were not attentive. Also the restaurant is looking very tired and unclean. The staircase (we were sat upstairs) is really quite grubby and the chairs we sat on we all ripped and torn. Not pleasant at all. Sadly we won’t be returning.More

We’ve been to China Cottage many times, it hasn’t changed for years, to be honest it could do with a bit of a spruce up, but the food is always good. The Sunday buffet is excellent value, freshly cooked and tastes delicious. We’ll definitely be...going backMore

Visited as a family for the Sunday banquet. We have been going for many years but felt the food had gone downhill. The Dim Sum was very bland and we didn’t order any seconds of the mains. Leo is fantastic and very welcoming as was...the other younger male serving us but the lady with the pony tail is very sullen and not what you’d expect at ChinaCottage (though she has been there years) The price has dramatically increased which I can understand based on ingredients costs and lockdown but the drinks are quite expensiveMore

Recently had first takeaway from here. extremely high quality on both the starters and main courses. By far the best Chinese we had tasted for many years. Very good service for takeaway. We look forward to visiting the restaurant when current restrictions are eased

We dropped in here as we suddenly found ourselves with a spare couple of hours. China Cottage is highly rated locally so we thought we'd give a sit down meal a go rather than a takeaway. Service was great, efficient but not over bearing, you...could have you meal as you wanted. The food was pipping hot and well presented. This food is British Chinese its as Chinese as a Chicken Tikka Masala is Indian, but thats a given. In all honesty I found the food bland and under seasoned. Not something you often say about Chinese food. Its clearly mostly bought in pre preped and cooked off. Again like most Chinese food. The portions were on the small side. That said the prices were fair. It was pleasant but I've had better and I don't think it is as good as the hype. If getting a takeaway id drive the extra 5 miles for better.More

England was playing so i decided to have a takeway, and opted for my favorite Chinese restaurant. Ordered the hot and sour soup, salt and pepper squid, and spare ribs in OK sauce. Advised it would be ready in 10mins, and its was. Food was...excellent. Soup was spicy, and there was plenty of squid and ribs.More

Place was empty but assumed it was quiet time, the two ladies serving were rude from the off, they make you feel that everything is too much trouble. We placed our order which originally was going to be a set meal take out but we...changed it due to the fact it was my birthday, so because of this the same meal was an extra £11 and we understood this was due to service etc... However we ended up leaving after the start as what I saw totally made me feel sick. During our meal a lady that had shoulder length hair down took out the nail clippers and started to clip her nails, throughout our soup starter she was clip clip clipping away. She gathered the nails and threw them in a bin to the side, if this wasn't bad enough she then spat! Yes spat in this bin. I at this point couldn't eat anymore so stopped asked to end he meal taking away the other courses as I felt sick. However it didn't stop there, the same lady opened some paper napkins and began to pick her nose, using her fingers she plunged in and out wiping whatever she discovered on the yellow napkin, she noticed I was watching so didn't stop but just knelt behind the counter. We paid up fuming at this and I was too angry to confront her also I had my 8 year old son with me that quite frankly showed much better table manners than this older lady. We took our food and paid the £70 for the meal that as soon as we left we chucked into the bin. How are we to know that this is just the actions of one staff member and not that of everyone including the chefs, it is that reason we will never return again and will tell everyone I know to do the same. Please stay away, if the bad service isn't enough to put you off surely cutting nails, spitting and picking nose is. Spoiled my birthday and was £70 I didn't have wasted, but spent due to my birthday treat. GuttedMore

Visited Leo and the team on Sunday for the Banquet, we were shown efficiently to our table. Service from all staff was knowledgeable and professional. Food was of a very high quality and delicious. Tables on both floors were busy, they had music on which...created a nice atmosphere. Worth every penny. Can't wait to go again.More
